  1. Im not knocking Pardew, he did a fair to good job, but what he achieved at Saints has to be put into context. He had huge resources for Lg1, was paid highly himself and had operated at a much higher level than his fellow Lg1 managers. I just didnt see much evidence of enough 'added value' from him. I think many competent managers could have achieved what he did. Adkins by contrast really seems to bring something extra, so far.
  2. Im not basing that just on what Adkins has done here, which is a promising start, no more, but on their careers over the past 5 years. Adkins seems tactically and motivationally strong - getting his players to overachieve. That would be a huge turnaround for Saints who have underachieved as a group for 5 years or more.
  3. A stone (translation from German, go me.)
  4. Pardew obviously had his strengths, but Adkins is a more 'complete' manager imo.
  5. My ex assaulted me in front of the kids. Nice lady. The neighbours saw it and called the police. I didnt want it to go to court because it would potentially have made the situation worse, but the CPS prosecuted 'in the public interest' (she was a teacher) and she got found guilty. So it does happen.
  6. 8081. Can still dial it on 123 now.
  7. Trident costs c£1.2 billion pa to run (excl build costs). The replacement would cost c£76bn over 30 years including build, so about £2.5bn pa according to the guardian. http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2006/sep/21/military.armstrade
  8. Old Gabe was great! Reminded me of the group of 15 year olds I knew in Sweden whose hobby was making plastic explosive and blowing up boulders.
  9. Schneiderlin scored for France tonight. Adding more attacking threat to his play for Saints would make him awesome.
  10. Quite. Trident costs us less than £2bn a year - 0.3% of government expenditure .
  11. I climbed a volcano last week (climbed as went in car, cable car and jeep, not as in actually going to any effort), Etna in Sicily, most active volcano in the world. I touched some hot rocks.

  14. Ah. Condecension in the absence of wit or wisdom. Must try harder.
  15. 1. Do you really think that the Americans saying 'no' would carry any weight if the UK was directly and imminently threatened? 2. Mutually Assured Total Destruction is not the only option. Trident warheads are very flexible capable of delivering small local payloads. They represent just about the only option we have of wiping out a missile site in Iran or some other far flung remote threat.
  16. Maybe there is more 'history' to this incident. In general though having kids who love their dad unconditionally, but retain a small degree of fear of the consequences of bad behaviour is no bad thing imo.
  17. University is great. Three years of being young, getting drunk, getting laid, and having fun. I wouldnt have missed it for the world. Id like my kids to have the same experience. That doesnt change the fact that its not reasonable to expect someone who is working to give up part of their family income to fund a student on a course unless there is some wider economic benefit / wealth creation. In my totalitarian state students in subjects like biochemistry, engineering, medicine and IT would get free courses and grants. Most students in soft subjects (with a few exceptions for real talents) like philosophy, East African cultural studies or social anthropology would have to pay their own way.
  18. This guy narrowly escaped 150 days in jail for hosing down his 8 year old son for peeing and pooing in the house. What the guy did is clearly over the top, but so is the reaction to it imo. My 7 year old son used to to regularly, until recently wet and poo himself, even when sitting on the sofa 15 feet away from the toilet - bright boy - no special needs. His mum said we shouldnt get cross with him and that had zero effect. The shame of me putting him back in nappies had a rapid transformation. Whats the line between abuse and necessary discipline? http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-kent-11524155

  20. TBF brewing and distilling is a real industry requiring real science. And golf is a major leisure activity requiring people who know what they're doing - but yep the rest is a waste of public money.
  21. Ah. Anyway, as you said - regardless of whether he made it to the actual summit or not I rank his achievement as the greatest on Everest, with Hillary second and the rest largely irrelevant.

  23. Are you suggesting he fell up hill?
