Yep, not doubting his 'sources' are genuine...just pondering whether, sometimes, his source might feed him misleading information to spin a story one way or the other...? In other words, when his source tells him "we've had two bids from Southampton" how does he know whether that is actually the case or not?
Just because the information he's given 99% of the time turns out to be right doesn't mean that he won't be fed misleading information the other 1% of the time. Indeed, the fact that he's a reliable source 99% of the time makes him an ideal conduit for the odd snippet of misleading info every now and then.
Anyway, probably me thinking too hard again...
