If its because of players being sold, have you considering waiting to see who they are replaced with? In any case, Saints can't offer players Champions League level wages and a good chance of competing for Champions League football. We have a number of players good enough for that level, but not enough to get there ourselves.

That article is spinning what he meant somewhat and is lost in translation, he talked of winning FA Cup/League Cup and getting into the Europe. I doubt he meant the Champions League.

Why do you think Cortese would have made a difference? Shaw is reported to be now earning £5m+ per year and is at one of the biggest clubs in the world. As long as Man Utd met our price it was always going to happen.

That doesn't mean Shaw wouldn't be sold. Shaw is reportedly being offered £5m+ per year wage and Man Utd are offering Saints £30m+. With that king of money on offer to player, agent and club he wasn't going to stay. That doesn't mean Koeman wouldn't like to have him in the squad, but Koeman probably knows he now has a large budget from the deal to both replace Shaw at left back and improve other areas of the squad.

Why do people bring that up? Reed was appointed because Dowie was sacked and Reed was already at the club that was failing badly. Would it not be better to judge Reed on the 4 extremely sucesseful years he has been at Saints than 6 weeks he was the Charlton manager for? Do you judge Brian Clough on his 44 days at Leeds?

A "firesale" is selling players for bargain basement prices. Selling an 18 year old to arguably the biggest club in the world for £30m+ and stating you will invest all that money back into the team is not a bargain basement firesale!

I find that all very hard to believe! Targett is 61 days younger than Shaw, they are effectively the same age. Yet... - Shaw has 60 appearances for a Premier League side, 3 senior England caps, a World Cup under his belt and a £30m+ price tag on his head. - Targett has yet to play a professional game. I'm not writing Targett off as he does indeed have potential, but Shaw is clearly a long way ahead and the age gap is so tiny it is irrelevant.

Saints also won't be buying replacements with all of the money upfront so it balances out.

Where would Saints be getting a £70m transfer budget from if they didn't sell anyone beforehand? i Saints will have a transfer budget this summer of say £25m to £35m, they'd then add to that with money from players sold. Amy is suggesting it then rises to £70m, we sell £90m of players. Which is very different from the picture Les Reed and Ralph Krueger painted where they indicated there was already a healthy transfer pot and all money from player sales would go back into the team.
