Cheers, yes you're right about the perils - my Dad broke legs, feet and lost the use of his foot for a year and none of it was his fault, another friend lost his spleen. This was why I didn't follow up my interest for so long but.....it's kind of in the blood. Have to say that now that I'm determined to take it back up I'm really excited! I'll let you all know how I get on... Also, any recommendations for a good starter semi practical bike would be greatly appreciated. I'm looking in the 3 -4 grand price bracket.

Cheers, all good advice. The important thing for now is getting the license and then looking for a bike (though I'm sure I'll start looking earlier). As I'm only 5ft 8" I'll need something I can handle easily. The temptation is to get something very quick and very impressive but there's plenty of time for that - I'll resist. The topbox isn't gay at all, the sensible side of me is already thinking something along the tourer side of the street (though it does seem boring).

Thanks Baj, that's exactly the kind of thing I had in mind. I've toyed with the idea of getting back into bikes for a while but either not had the time or money. In a few months I'll be able to have both so it makes sense. I'm lucky that my Dad is still well into bikes so will give me good advice (even though he's just turned 60) and I'll confess one of the reasons is it'll be a shared interest for us. One of the reasons for being able to afford it is my Grandad has just died and I'd like to go for some rides with my Dad while we can both appreciate it. Plus it'll make the commuter run a lot more fun and quicker. I'll let you know how it goes.

I'm thinking about taking up biking. Used to be well into it as a kid, had my own bike and used to do some trial bike stuff with my Dad but unfortunately he had a nasty accident when I was 15 and the whole thing was off limits. Now, some 20 years later I'm thinking it would be good to get back into it. I've had no experience since I was 15 so would appreciate any advice and suggestions. Looks like the DAS course would be a good route to go down. Anyone done this? What was it like and how much does it cost? Cheers

Anyway, I'm spoiling my vote in the general election because quite simply there is no one who represents what I believe and until we get proportional representation there is no chance that my vote will count for anything anyway. I'd like a return to conviction politics and to ideology where politicians are unafraid to stand up for what they believe in instead of pretending to be all things to all people and pandering to focus groups.

Yes, let's have a general election as soon as possible. Personally I can't get enough of the two parties arguing over their favourite colour (surely that's the only difference these days?) I can't wait for them both to promise lower taxes and increased spending on public services. Yes, let's have a summer of petty squabbling over the presentation of vacuous slogans. In what sense did the original post mention the lib dems? The one I quoted certainly didn't. Actually I do understand politics - I work for the government. That's any government that's democratically elected and without prejudice. All i'm saying is that the slogan "socialist" and particularly atypical socialist is a tired cliche that has no relevance within this thread. Oh, and any MP caught out with bogus and irresponsible expense claims are conning the public whatever their party. To suggest that the Tories are less to blame because "we expect that from them" would give some indication as to why they lost power and remain in opposition, no? I don't recall any party manifesto claiming that they would endeavour to fiddle their expenses as much as possible so this is not a party issue - it's an individual thing.

The other thing to consider is that would players be willing to give up or defer their pay if not all the other players did it? Say, for example, you're Kelvin Davies agree to defer wages for the good of the club and then see a colleague like BWP not follow suit? I'm not sure I'd be happy in that situation.

I'd agree with this Thing is they're allowed to claim things like this. Whether it's right or wrong is irrelevant 0 they're just doing what they're allowed to get away with. Without wanting to get all judgemental I think this is one of the reasons why people didn't contribute to the bucket collections. Who wants to see their donated money go to people who already earn a comparitively high wage? I think if it had been stressed that it would go to non-playing staff then there would have been more raised. I'd agree though that I don't think we can blame players for not deferring their wages - it would have been a nice gesture and would have helped a lot though. Just finished "Child 44" by Tim Rob Smith. Nice little cold war thriller. It wasn't great but the pace was pretty good. Ludicrous ending but I wasn't expecting too much anyway. It was a nice little book that required little concentration which is great as I've been off sick. Next up is "The damned united". I've had it kicking around for ages and not got round to it until now.
