Van Nistelrooy is out of favour and Real Madrid are looking to offload. We could do with another striker so fits the bill.

It's not really about how good we are anymore as far as the playoffs are concerned. We need to outperform at least the 7 teams immediately above us to have any chance of a playoff spot when the Southend fans get on the coach home. Also the the team is, the larger the points deficit. I hate to put a downer on things, but if we signed Messi, Xavi and Kaka we'd still have a challenge on our hands overhauling 10 points in 20 odd games.

Great news IMO. For the first time since 2002 we are strengthening ourndefence before it becomes a problem. We still need a RB and another CB will be needed to replace Perry in summer, but this is a fantastic start. Welcome aboard Jose!!

If we're just talking about the centre, I wouldn't include Lallana. He's a striker or a winger. I also wouldn't include Wotton because I think he is extremely limited and surplus to requirements. In that respect we do have too much quantity. That leaves four quality CM players, which is about right IMO.

Only going by what I read on here at the time, but according to a lot of reports, WTF and Poortaloo didn't get on. It was kind of like the icing on a very undercooked cake. DM Pele was one of our best players in that season. He was excellent. A crap centre half yes, but I'd have him ahead of Hammond. West Brom paid £1m for him.

Well, IMO £6m plus John would add up to about £7m. If that's not enough then what is? £10m? £10m buys world class strikers. If you had £10m to spend, would you spend it on Defoe, Crouch, Carlton Cole or an unproven Championship striker with a mediocre scoring record?

Hardly. £6m was probably about right. Similar amounts have been spent on Andy Johnson and David Nugent, all with much more convincing scoring records and even England caps. Not sure how much you'd have expected for Jones, but £6m plus John is about right IMO.

Not quite that black and white. The previous board p*ssed him off, but they were gone by the time it came to offering a new contract. When left Bristol City he turned ip claiming he wanted to stay and earn a new contract. Then as soon as a better offer came along he was all, "Saints are messing me around and taking too long, I'm leaving". I lost all respect for him for that.

Not really true though. We let a few slip through the net, but that happens at every club. I can't think of any young players we've released that have gone on to be world beaters recently. Scott McDonnald is doing pretty well at Celtic, that's about as good as I can remember since Phillips and Wise some 20 odd years ago now. Can't say I've seen all that much of Mellis to pass judgement. The only real spell was the Swindon game, when none of them showed up. Other than that I've only seen a few sub appearances and one other start, might have been Norwich in the cup, when he was average. Good luck to him anyway.
