Did you earn any more after that? It's been messed about with for ages. I remember it being called family allowance and child allowance and now child benefit. At one time the money went to the husband and there were complaints that he would spend it on booze and fags so then they made it payable to the mother and eventuially it was absorbed into the tax system. It's only in recent years (recent to me) that we have seen the rise in unmarried mothers and single-parent families. It could be argued hat the welfare state has encouraged this. Further to my earlier questioning as to whether the state should encourage people to have children it occured to me that it might be a long-term plan to make sure that there are enough carers around to reduce the burden on the state caused by too many old people.

I'm with you on this. Oh, and sorry to spoil your day Pap, but you never stop paying for your kids. The only consolation is that are going to look after you in your old age. It's a matter of semantics perhaps, but we're not actually giving these people any money, we're just not taking quite as much in tax. They will still be paying nearly half of their extra earnings in tax and overall NI. There is a separate question as to whether we should be helping anybody to have kids at all.

Indeed it would, it doesn't bear thinking about. The only thought I have is why start a fire when the ground is in use? Around that time I was at Dean Court when a fire started smouldering in a gap in the wooden flooring of the stand. Luckily it never got really going but it took some time to get it dealt with. Just after the Bradford tragedy I was sitting behind two silly schoolgirls in the upper East Stand at the Dell who were trying to have a crafty smoke. I found it sad that they hadn't even heard of the one at Bradford.

I mentioned a proposal earlier and got snapped down for it but I think it's worth consideration. I read in the Times an argument that rather than building starter homes we should be building more retirement properties so that older people could move out of their oversized houses and free these up for the younger population. It was suggested that these occupants may need some incentive to move out, maybe by removing or reducing stamp duty for their new purchase. Any duties theoretically lost would be made up by the purchase of the home they had vacated and by an increased number of transactions.

Accusing someone of lying is extremely serious and should be used very carefully. Hearsay is a specific legal term relating to evidence which is not first-hand and cannot be tested in court, under oath. You may not have been aware of this. The questions that I specifically asked you, although somewhat rhetorical in nature, were not speculation but were intended to demonstrate to you (and possibly anyone else who might still be interested if they haven't fallen asleep or found some other passion to fulfil) how few details of the affair are public knowledge. Basically you and others have said 'Jeremy Clarkson punched somebody'. Could you stand up in court and substantiate that? Of course you couldn't, so in determining whether any crime has been committed anything that any of us might think is legally 'hearsay'. On a more personal note, and with apologies for straying from the subject under discussion, I am struggling to see why you participate in this forum. It provides somewhere for us all to offer opinions on Saints, football, and many other worldy matters and should not be seen as an opportunity to satisfy your misanthropic tendencies.
