  1. At last! Somebody has asked the relevant question. I don't have any answers though. Maybe a complete strip out and redevelopment of the Itchen waterfront to include a significant part of the University.
  2. To be fair that applies to a lot of places.
  3. London is in constant turnover, give it three months and everybody's changed. In a big city like London you can spend all day working with people and then go home and never see them again. That's one of the reasons why nobody talks to their neighbours whilst waiting for the bus or standing on the tube, you'll most likely never see them again. When we moved down to this area in 1971 we immediately noticed how much friendlier everybody was, and I'm sure it's the same for other parts of the country. In the local business community here you generally know most people within a twenty mile circle, or at least, know somebody who knows somebody. Most of my family are from north London and their attitudes are very parochial.
  4. It's not a subsidy. They're just giving you back a little of what they have taken. It's a ridiculously over-complicated system.
  5. 'Voted by its residents' You've made that bit up, but don't let the facts get in the way of your arguments. And from the authors: ‘The survey is proudly unscientific, and based on emotion, as much as all the usual crime statistics, house prices, local facilities, transport and schools.’
  6. Isn't it even worse for Man Utd? Not that I care about that.
  7. And the north is full of northerners...
  8. Plus the away games
  9. I think that's the plan.
  10. Won't there be other games at 3pm?
  11. I don't think I said 'irrelevant', just 'secondary'. Out of interest, how much do we get for a televised game these days?
  12. Indeed. It's 'market price sensitivity'.
  13. Secondary means not as important as the main source, not insignificant. They still matter but if the great god of TV says kick-off on Sunday at 10 o'clock in the evening then the clubs would still say 'yes sir, three bags full sir'. The prices are not set to give the fans a good day out at a reasonable price, they are to maximise income. Whether they are at that level is open to debate but they may be happier with a stadium 80% full at high prices than a sell-out at something lower.
  14. I refer the honourable gentleman to the answer I gave just before, post #137. I think you're beginning to get my point. If you include all the boroughs of London then you also have to allow Southampton the Isle of Wight.
  15. This is the future. The bulk of the money comes from TV and all else is secondary.
  16. Ilkey? Apart from a famous chip shop just up the road what does it offer?
  17. What dough? 4 years out of 17, and those in a deep recession.
  18. First was still in holiday season. Next was Sunday 4:00 on telly. Swansea was Sunday at silly time. And the price is excessive.
  19. Why are you obsessed with this? I give an example, nothing more, of Cowes as being as near to Southampton City Centre as anywhere within the M25 is to the City of London. The fact that they are separated by 11 miles of water just makes that example more extreme. If you're going to include all the London boroughs in the appraisal of London then you have to include all the amenities around Southampton. That is all..
  20. Yes, also called the Square Mile and separate from the City of Westminster.
  21. This definition? . the administrative area of London, consisting of the City of London and 32 boroughs (13 Inner London boroughs and 19 Outer London boroughs): formed in 1965 from the City, parts of Surrey, Kent, Essex, and Hertfordshire, and almost all of Middlesex, and abolished for administrative purposes in 1996: a Mayor of London and a new London Assembly took office in 2000. Pop: 7 387 900 (2003 est). Area: 1579 sq km (610 sq miles) That's bigger than a lot of sovereign states. How can you compare it with the City of Southampton?
  22. That just shows how ridiculous the whole concept is. What are we considering here? How do we define a town? Does London include everything inside the M25.
  23. We were actually talking about the Solent, but just because two locations are separated by a short stretch of water doesn't mean that they are not a connected community.
