Precisely this. Following the debacle of the last game he officiated at Goodison and the booing he hot before KO, he knew he would get lynched on the way out of the ground if he had given it. I posted at the very start of the match thread that I thought this would happen.

You have to consider how young and relatively inexperienced he is. And also you have to consider that he has not had a settled midfield in front of him for some time now, which I imagine will be putting more pressure on him than he was used to earlier in the season. He didn't have a bad game today overall, but it's fair to say his positioning lead directly to Everton's first goal.

After he was roundly booed by the Everton fans as his name was announced prior to KO, I have a horrible feeling that Clattenburg is going to try and atone for his unpopularity with them by awarding an idiotic penalty like the one he gave to Arsenal against us.

Away at Chelsea we were totally outclassed (in the second half anyway), and for large periods of the Spurs game they tore through our defence like it wasn't there. But aside from those two examples, we have looked competitive against the very best opposition.
