The Starmer Years - Can The New Broom Sweep Clean?
Sheaf Saint replied to sadoldgit's topic in The Lounge
Remember the "There's no money left" note that Liam Byrne jokingly penned in 2010? That was used by so many on the right to excuse poor government performance for many years after Cameron & Clegg took office. And now many of the same people* seem to expect Labour to have completely fixed the absolute clusterfuck they inherited within a year. And this isn't meant as a ringing endorsement of Starmer and Reeves' performance in government, because clearly they've made a lot of mistakes so far and I'm far from impressed with them. But I'm not dumb enough to expect miracles from them either. * Not referring to anyone specifically on this thread, just right wing commentators in general. -
Two words for you: Scar tissue 😉

I was just wondering how many players have played for both clubs in the past, and the first one that came to mind was Barry Horne. A quick Google search indicates that Paul Jones had a brief loan spell there as well, a few years after he left us.

The Starmer Years - Can The New Broom Sweep Clean?

Appreciate your considered response. It's interesting how different people perceive things differently though, because from my perspective the opposite is true and they've actually shown themselves to be further to the right than their election campaign / manifesto suggested. I acknowledge that financial markets etc... are not my area of expertise. But I work for an arms length government body and there's not a single change that I've seen since last year's GE that suggests the current government are any more left wing than the previous one. If anything they've gone the other way in my sector and are pandering even more to corporate lobbyists in their insatiable drive for growth, much to the dismay and disappointment of many of my colleagues. -
The Starmer Years - Can The New Broom Sweep Clean?

Under Corbyn, yes. But Kier Starmer is not, and never has been a socialist, and nothing this government had done over the last 12 months fits squarely in the pigeonhole of socialism. In many aspects, quite the opposite in fact. So it would appear that your beef with them is based on assumptions about what the Labour party used to be, rather than what they actually are now. Which suggests you're not really in a strong position to be belittling other people's understanding of government and economics. -
Yes, and when even the lamb starts complaining about the farmer's lack of inches, that's when you know he's got real problems.
-
Yeah that'd do it.
-
Logged on this morning to find an argument about height between a farmer and a lamb. Guessing there's no new transfer rumours to discuss then.
-
-
It's just the way that all transfer negotiations work. Or any kind of auction for that matter. You have an idea in your head what's the maximum you're prepared to pay before walking away, then you start much lower than that. There would be much louder alarm bells if the club were going in close to Cov's valuation with our very first bid.

The Horticultural Thread for Club Plants (Split)

Yeah it doesn't seem to be very up to date. On the Lounge thread it included View From the Top in the top ten list of posters, but I haven't seen any posts from him in many years. -

Of course, it could just be that they’re… well-adjusted. 😄 How on Earth did Manji not make it onto this list? -
I'm dying to know how it would describe MLG and who it would compare him to.
-
I guess it depends how much he wants to go to the world cup next year.
-
Given Ducky's obvious disdain for any music released after about 1979, I can't see him being happy about that! Fun though this little game is (I don't think I even want to know what it says about me) @Lighthouse any chance you could split this out please? Doesn't feel right having it in a thread on such a serious subject.
-
I can't recall ever seeing him play on the right.
-
That's not what many of their fans seem to think.
-
Indeed. It's actually quite easy to do. What Soggy has been told is that his ignorance in conflating Israelis/the Netenyahu government with Jewish folk in general, however unintentional, can be and is considered antisemitic. Sadly though, attempts to explain that to him appear to have fallen on deaf ears.
-
Exactly. And if anyone really finds it objectionable, the answer would appear to be very simple... Don't watch it.
-
Disagree on both counts. There would be plenty of expectation on him from their entitled fans, given the fee. And although they probably won't go down, I wouldn't bet against them being in the mix near the bottom. They've been flirting with it for a number of years and their squad really isn't all that good.
-
Nope. I think you'd have to go back to the days of Jimmy Case.
-
Not sure he would pass even our very lax medical examination with two broken wrists.
-
You say that, but some friends of mine went to live in Japan for a year with their 3yo kid, just for the experience before he started school. I appreciate Sheffield to Tokyo is a world away from Girona to Southampton, but I wouldn't rule it out completely.

Were there actually any serious bids for Grealish that summer though? I genuinely can't remember.
