Q&A: Warming of 2C would trigger ‘catastrophic’ loss of world’s ice, new report says - Carbon Brief Global warming of 2C would see “extensive, long-term [and] essentially irreversible” losses from the Earth’s ice sheets and glaciers, warns a new report. It would also lead to polar oceans that are “ice-free” in summer and suffering “essentially permanent corrosive ocean acidification”, the report says. The 2023 “state of the cryosphere” report from the International Cryosphere Climate Initiative (ICCI) lays out the impacts on Earth’s frozen land and seas from sustained warming at 2C and the “catastrophic global damage” that would result. These impacts would include “potentially rapid, irreversible sea level rise from the Earth’s ice sheets”, the report says, with a “compelling number of new studies” all pointing to thresholds of sustained ice loss for both Greenland and parts of Antarctica at well-below 2C. This would commit the world to “between 12 and 20 metres” of sea level rise “if 2C becomes the new constant”.

It's unusually mild for the time of year up here in Yorkshire at the moment, but looks like the temperature is forecast to drop significantly before the weekend. Might even have to put a jumper on!

This ref is an absolute tool.
-
Lol. That is never, ever a penalty. But the Maguire one should have been, so it's evened out I guess.
-
I realise this game is meaningless, but what an utter load of shite.
-
Maguire showing there exactly why he isn't getting regular game time for Utd. What a shitshow.
-
It wouldn't surprise me at all. Last season, when the penalty should have been applied, a 10 point deduction would have seen them drop. But thanks to there being 3 truly shit teams up there this season, the PL can be seen to be doing something about the rule breaking without having to deal with the fallout of their action resulting a 'big' club like Everton being relegated. The whole thing stinks.

I'm not claiming you have tried to silence me, and I'm not 'playing the victim', I'm just pointing out the serious flaws in your arguments and lack of balanced judgement and unwillingness to learn more about a sensitive issue. If you think that's me exceeding the point of being polite and reasonable then I would suggest you are the one playing the victim here, not me. I'm not asking you to believe something that someone feels is true, I'm asking you to read the empirical research that contradicts your unfounded opinion. Not the same thing at all. To flatly refuse to do that, and to continue to express an opinion that is not supported by the available evidence, is indicative of prejudice on your part even if you do not acknowledge it yourself. So I'm sorry if you think my last paragraph was impolite and unreasonable, but considering you have a responsibility to moderate comments on this board that could be construed as discriminatory to minority groups, I find your lack of judgement on this issue troubling.

You really have no clue what you're on about do you. Firstly, I suggest you do some reading around some of the empirical research into the issue to understand the contributing factors to the suicidality rate. I shared a load with you yesterday but you dismissed it all because you didn't like the site they were posted on instead of actually following the links. That tells me that you have no interest in actually understanding the issue and are quite happy to continue to make a fool of yourself by making absurd and, frankly, insulting assumptions about the mindset of all suicidal trans people. Secondly, how exactly does SOG's example prove your point? Has it not occurred to you that this person might have known for many years that they were trans but had never felt comfortable or confident to come out because of fear of stigmatisation / rejection (and the kind of ignorant judgement from society that you yourself are showing)? And that having to live in the closet for so many years (likely since childhood) could possibly have fed into mental health issues in later life? You simply can't make a snap assumption that their dysphoria arose from a preexisting mental health condition and not vice versa from a few lines on a forum post. The fact that you would even suggest that makes you look like an ignorant fool with a total lack of cultural awareness around the issue. Frankly, I would expect much better from a mod. How could any trans forum user trust that you are making good judgements on what posts are and are not acceptable on this topic when you are displaying an alarming degree of prejudice about it?
-
That is an absurd strawman argument, attacking a position I have not claimed and ridiculously over-simplifying a very complicated issue. I thought you were smarter than this Lighthouse.

Don't think anyone is denying there is a link. The dispute here is about the direction of causality. There is a wealth of research data out there that indicates mental health problems among trans people are not an intrinsic part of gender dysphoria itself, but rather a common byproduct caused by social and cultural stressors. But there seems to be one or two people on this thread who dont want to accept that and think their own personal opinion somehow trumps it.

Idiot delivery drivers who seemingly can't understand the simple instruction "press here" on my camera doorbell. I fitted it for a reason, as I have recently built a garden office pod for WFH, but so many of them still just knock and then leave a card when I inevitably don't answer. I know delivery driving isn't exactly a high skilled job, but the ability to use a fucking doorbell should still be a prerequisite FFS.

Absolute bollocks. Why not go and learn about the difference between gender and sex. It's really not that hard to grasp.
-
I get that, but it's not unprecedented. Using they/them is common when referring to an individual whose identity is unknown, but it does seem a little un-personal to use it when referring to a specific person. But again, that's just a result of how our language was constructed and used in the past, and it will become more normalised over time.

An interesting anecdote, but completely irrelevant. The types of stressors yarp (😉) are referring to aren't comparable to the kind of depression and anxiety triggers experienced by LGBTQ people, especially youths. It's not denial, it's evidence-backed. And that last sentence is just flat out untrue. There has been a lot of research into this area, and all the evidence suggests that LGBTQ people are not inherently prone to suicide risk because of their sexuality or gender identity, but face a higher risk of it as a result of stigmatisation and non-validation in society. Yes, mine arrived on Monday too.

Nobody is forcing you to call them anything. They are asking you to. You can either choose to be respectful to their wishes and agree, or you can choose to be a belligerent prick and refuse. It's entirely up to you.
-
It's not undeniable, it's just your (severely ill-informed) opinion.
-
From the NHS website... https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/gender-dysphoria/ All those health issues you cited are just as prevalent among gay and bisexual people as well, but homosexuality isn't considered a mental illness in and of itself. Depression, anxiety and suicidality among LGBTQ+ individuals are well understood to be widely caused by emotional distress brought on by social and cultural issues such as prejudice and victimisation/bullying. So no, they are not merely a coincidence, but they are a symptom of the gender dysphoria rather than a cause of it.
-
https://www.bbc.com/news/health-48448804 The WHO (and countless other health institutions worldwide including the NHS) don't consider it to be a mental health disorder, but I guess you know better than them, right?
-
Fuck me. I've seen some ill-informed bollocks posted on this forum over the years, and this is right up there with the very worst of it. I would try and share with you the wealth of information out there which shows that gender dysphoria is not a mental illness, but something tells me you would still find a way to dismiss it because it doesn't fit your world view, so I'm not going to waste my time other than to just say please educate yourself on this issue.
-
Congratulations on demonstrating spectacular ignorance by dismissing both gender dysphoria and mental illness all in the space of one sentence. No wonder you consider transphobia to be an invented term. Saves you from having to see it in yourself.

Corrected it for you. Bella Ramsey is gender neutral. I get that it's tricky though. A few years back, the poet Kate Tempest came out as gender neutral and changed their name to Kae. I still struggle to remember though, having been so used to thinking of them as a she/her. I don't mean to be disrespectful, but it's hard to change lifelong habits Would be easier if we didn't have separate words for he and she like in other languages (Chinese, for example), then this wouldn't even be an issue.

She'll just have to keep dreaming of seeing that flight take off. Shame.
