If someone comes up with an original and brilliant idea don't they deserve to be rewarded? If you study for 10 years to obtain a qualification shouldn't you be entitled to some form of compensation? What is the incentive for innovation if no competition exists? The "free rider" problem of economic game theory is the downfall of any socialist experiment as it appears to be impossible to motivate everybody by sheer altruism. Capitalism is one of the few ways mankind has found to ensure an efficient (but far from perfect) allocation of resources, avarice as you term it is one of the few efficient ways to motivate people.
