If Stern John features tmrw, what reaction he is likely to get?
CHAPEL END CHARLIE replied to shurlock's topic in The Saints
I asked for some specific evidence that SJ had lied and the forum will note that none is on offer here . Again you don't know what went on behind the scenes and to call a player a 'liar' based on a mere supposition I find contemptible . There are always two sides to every argument and you Sir seem to be only interested in placing the worst possible interpretation on SJ's behaviour for some reason . It seems to me the player almost certainly came back here with a genuine view to negotiating a new contract (I see no quote from SJ or SFC saying he'd made any final commitment to signing a contract) but the two parties could not reach an amicable agreement at the of the day - that happens all the time in football/business/life . I''ve been a member of this forum for 3 years now and I've never felt the need to accuse a Saints player of being a cheat or a liar , pity you can't say the same . -

Where you privy to all the negotiations between the player and the club ? If (as I suspect) you are not then accusing SJ of 'lying' is a very serious accusation , you better produce some convincing evidence or withdrawn the claim . -

I see absolutely no reason why any thinking Saints fan would want to boo SJ , after all he didn't actually 'walk out on us' did he - the record shows he was out of contract and hence a free agent . I personally will never forget his superb match winning performance against Sheffield Utd in the final game of the 07/08 season . -

I think skinny people should get a discount , just think how much money the airlines save on fuel alone . Short people to get cheap trousers & baldies to be let off hat tax . -
I think you will find the RAF might prefer to spend its all too limited cash on nice shiny new aeroplanes rather than spud peelers . As it happens I spend every working day with an old fella who did actually do his National Service in the 1950's (in Kenya fighting the Mau Mau) and while he never stops talking about it ( trust me on this ) I do note he left the Army pretty damn quick as soon as his two years were up .

They're in a rotten bargaining position when it comes to player transfers , say two very different offers come in for this mythical £12m player of theirs : Club 'A' offers £12m payable over 3 years with various add ons . Club 'B' offers £4m in cash tomorrow take it or leave it . Lets face it they have to take Club 'B's offer providing they can persuade the player to leave that is .

If we are to take this question seriously then the Royal Navy and the RAF could hardly use conscripts anyway as most of their jobs are highly skilled requiring prolonged technical training that conscripts are fundamentally unsuitable for , frankly they don't have the ships/aircraft to usefully employ the extra personal anyway . Much the same arguments apply to the Army as well , the modern soldier is a very different beast to their 1940/50's (poor bloody infantry) forbears . A large number of recruits who currently volunteer (and are desperately keen) to serve in the armed forces are rejected as unsuitable for some reason - God alone knows what percentage of unwilling and unfit conscripts the military would really want . As I've already stated I object in the strongest possible terms to young conscripts being forcibly sent into combat (except in major national emergencies such as WWII for instance) but even ignoring the moral question the budgetary issues make any return of the 'call up' a non starter . With the country massively in debt thanks to the banking crisis and the defence budget targeted for severe cuts rather than the massive expansion that military conscription would surely require this is just never going to happen . Of course those on here advocating the return of conscription could always volunteer for the front line in Afghanistan if they really think it's such a good idea - or is this only a good idea as long as it doesn't apply to them ?

I have forwarded a copy of this thread to the editor of the Oxford English Dictionary as evidence that the usage of the word 'Realistic' has changed so that it has now become synonymous with the word 'Mediocre' . Doubtless the appropiate amendment will be issued in the next edition . realistic [ˌrɪəˈlɪstɪk] adj 1. showing awareness and acceptance of reality 2. practical or pragmatic rather than ideal or moral 3. (of a book, film, etc.) depicting or emphasizing what is real and actual rather than abstract or ideal 4. (Philosophy) of or relating to philosophical realism 5. The ready acceptance of the poor or second rate in the Southampton area Happy to help .

Saints need to win 16 out of 21 league games
CHAPEL END CHARLIE replied to AndyD's topic in The Saints
If you want to argue stats then the record shows our season long average is well under 2 points per game . On the wider point of where we are going this season can I ask have you actually seen us play recently ? - If the answer is yes then the basis of your view that we going to climb the table seems rather scant to this fan . Again - to get good results (more often than not) you need to play good football . -
People on here keep telling me they don't care how we play and/or that it doesn't matter anyway - I on the other hand favour your point of view .
-
The reported transfer fee is only a element of what a player actually costs the club , wages/bonuses/agents fees ... etc all have to be taken into account .
-
I'm absolutely certain I wouldn't have wanted to do it when I was 18 so I'm not about to advocate it for the current young generation . It's awful enough losing fine young men every week who have at least actively volunteered for combat - forcing teenage conscripts to kill or be killed in the interest of the state is a spectacle I would hope this nation has put far behind us . Not only am I against conscription in principle I'd go even further - if I had my way no service personal would be allowed to serve in a combat zone until they are at least 21 years old and possibly mature enough to understand what they are getting themselves into .
-
I'm more than happy to accept that people who haven't actually been to a game should not criticise a players performance (indeed that is my posting policy) but to state that the vast majority of Saints supporters who weren't at Millwall yesterday for instance have no right to express an opinion about the nature of the result strikes me as mere dogma . Not every fan can go to every match for all kinds of reasons , but they can still have something worthwhile to contribute to debate surely . I wasn't in World War II (thank goodness) by I still have plenty of opinions about that !

I understand Doncaster have a lad called Gillett that may be available .

CHAPEL END CHARLIE replied to AndyD's topic in The Saints
The old 'it doesn't matter how you play' argument rears its oh so ugly head again . The point FF was making is perfectly valid in my opinion , and while it's obviously true you can play badly and still win on occasion (good teams often do) the record shows that we've played pretty badly and dropped 7 of the last 12 available points - many might say those two facts are not entirely unconnected . I reckon if we continue to play as poorly as we undoubtedly have in recent weeks/months then we'll finish this season rather closer to the bottom of the table than the top . Play good football = Get good results . -
My advice to you is that if you elect to read a thread entitled 'Post Match Reactions' then you better be prepared to see some post match reactions - it does exactly what it says on the tin . It seems perfectly understandable to me that fans are annoyed at seeing their (rather expensive it must be said) team drop two crucial points with virtually the last kick of the game - perhaps you were expecting some kind of wild celebration . The big picture is not what fans on here happen to think it's the depressing observation that our team hasn't put in a really good performance in ..... what is it getting on for two months now ? Now that really is 'remarkable' .

The shape of things to come ?

Bugger the shape of things to come - this is what I really want if truth be told : http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/1982-FORD-CORTINA-CRUSADER-BLUE-Genuine-5432-miles_W0QQitemZ160395074894QQcmdZViewItemQQptZAutomobiles_UK?hash=item25584a9d4e I had one of these when I was young - and I'd sell my soul to have this one if I had the facilities to look after it properly . -
Millwall V Saints - Post Match Reaction
CHAPEL END CHARLIE replied to St Landrew's topic in The Saints
Well from my perspective (looking at the league table) we are tonight a substantial 12 points away from the play-off positions with only 21 games left to play . You don't have to be some mathematical genius to see that our (already slim) chances of getting out of this division this season are receding rapidly - and that is the plain and simple truth of it . We drew with Millwall on the first day of this season did we not ? 5 months and millions of £s spent later we still seem to be performing at exactly that same level if this result is any guide - I find that disappointing . The trouble unfortunetly with taking your long term view is that in the long term we're all dead , and I for one would quite like to see this club back where it belongs sometime before that day comes if that's all the same with you . -

I've no comprehension of all those on here who claim to be satisfied with a single point for some reason  . Unless you've already settled for some tedious mid-table position or you really fear we could still be relegated a draw for us (coupled with very few of the teams above us dropping points) is no bloody use to man nor beast . At this stage of the season we really should go all out for the win in every game we play - if we end up losing as a result then so be it . -

I understand our chance of making the play-offs is now for sale on eBay - 2p but it now . -
A wonderfully enigmatic 70's Australian film 'Long Weekend' is rather difficult to pin down in all honesty , not really a full fat horror film nor a conventional thriller either - something in between I suppose . 'Peter' (John Hargreaves) and 'Marcia' (Briony Behets) are a young middle class suburban couple attempting to salvage their failing relationship by 'getting away from it all' over the long bank holiday weekend . Alpha Male Peter drags the reluctant Marcia (recovering from an abortion) along to a very remote and apparently deserted beach - the extreme isolation of the idyllic wilderness setting is key to the film . Right from the very first scene the director (Colin Eggleston) manages to install a sense of almost supernatural unease about proceedings , modern mankind's alienation from nature has become elevated into open warfare almost as the pair and their 4x4 comprehensively trash the natural environment - so far so normal you might say but the twist is Mother Nature decides it's time she fought back . Both wildlife and the landscape itself seem to conspire against the couple as each unsettling event that befalls them stresses their already fragile relationship to breaking point and beyond ..... oh and there's something weird floating in the surf . You can find this movie on eBay for a few £s - money well spent I'd suggest . 8/10 .

The shape of things to come ?
CHAPEL END CHARLIE replied to CHAPEL END CHARLIE's topic in Motoring Forum
Personal experience tells me that my old Volvo V70 wagon delivers almost exactly the same 25 MPG whatever you do to it . A hybrid such as this new Chevy Volt for instance undertaking a shortish journey (I only do 10-20 miles a day normally) could do the whole trip on electric power only - now if that electric charge were generated from mains clean renewable energy resources or nuclear power (which I advocate) then your daily commute could be virtually 'emissions free' one day would it not . The fatal flaw in current purely battery powered vehicles (such as the Tesla) is that their range limitations and the unacceptable length of time it takes to recharge their power packs makes them impracticable for most users - the hybrid (imperfect as they are) seem to answer many of those problems to a degree at least . It's not just little me arguing this the giants of the motor industry are now concentrating their efforts on developing hybrid technology I understand so there must be something in it . Why manufacturers don't use more fuel efficient small turbodiesel engines in their hybrids is a question I have no answer for . -
Well both Coventry FC and the player involved seem aggrieved , indeed the player has been publicly humiliated some might say - which to my mind suggests something out of the ordinary has gone on here . Sometimes it's as important to be seen to do the right thing as to actually do it . I put it to you that something more than the cut and thrust of normal transfer 'negotiations' must have happened in this instance .
