I am not doubting that 39 points is probably enough, but I always like to get over the 40 point mark. Yes, it sounds a bit over cautious, but there you go. I bet I am not alone in preferring to get over 40 points.

Fail to invest and we will struggle next season. I think it is important to finish strongly and I bet we are already planning for next season !

Personal insults, why ? I will be charitable on this occasion and suggest that you read the post again. Now, the key word are 'lingering doubts'. In other words not strong, but just the remnants. so however, small the doubts, maybe there are just a few until the magic 40 points are achieved. I know I am being overly cautious, but not unreasonable and I have expressed my opinion thus. Quite frankly, your hostile and aggressive manner to my post is hard to fathom out.

You are probably NOT in the minority, just that more people post when they feel negative rather than positive. I share your sentiments exactly.

True, even in the 1970's, the late great Bill Shankly said the league was more important than the F A Cup !

For the sake of next season we do need to finish strongly. Keep the winning ways and carry on the building programme. This is the ideal time in fact for checking out some of our younger players and identifying new summer signings. Hopefully getting in early rather than leaving it to the last minute.

The team should be really up for this game. If we win, we can push on and finish 7th with a bit of luck. Also, 42 points would extinguish any lingering doubts about relegation, all achieved in February, now that is an achievement !

Yes, a good win will put smiles on peoples face. In the long run a good strong finish to the season is important to keep momentum going ! As for Wham, I really dislike this arrogant club and would love to see Saints cut them down to size !

This is one of the best fans sites in the country. I have been here and its predecessors since about 2001 and it is consistently a good site. As for 'trolls', I just think people need to loosen up a bit. 'Bat a troll back' they should be able to take it, but why get angry ?

If we beat Wham you will be OK, especially if Utd lose !!!

Well, I am content just to be in the top league, giving the big clubs the 'odd bloody nose' I would have thought our recent fall to League 1 was enough to stop people taking for granted what we have now.

and rightly so. The league is where it id at at the moment, the Cup is out of favour and would not bring us the same prestige.

A lot of negativity here. For our size we have got one of the best records of consistent top flight football ! That is a sign of success !

Another thread mentions squad depth. Perhaps that is the problem, we haven't got the depth we need to risk a cup run ?

Hey, I hardly ever bring the Hoddle debate up any more. It is nearly 10 years since .....oh sorry. Anyway I have been contributing on this site and its predecessors for about 13 years and it is still the best by a long mile. We need character posters and most of them are harmless. You don't have to reply to people you disagree with. Personal insulting is not on IMO and anyway I reckon that is a sign of weakness.

That is the Southampton I am proud of. Fighting against all odds and achieving a run of 27 years in the top flight. Give me that over a few cup runs anytime. As for breaking into the top 6, I never believed we would. Always happy to just dine at the top table. We are having a great season, but if we finish 17th next it will still be a good season.

I think the players will be up for Wham. Moreover, a good win and today will be forgotten.

I have a sneaky feeling that some of the Sunderland fans would rather wish they weren't in the Cup, many didn't even turn up today.
