Sentiment aside, where does JWP fit in to our midfield? Assuming Charles (who offers a bit more physicality) and Jander are fit ? If we go for a MF player I’d like it to be an DM to release both Charles and especially Jander who is more creative.

Bettenelli is a good example of something that is wrong with modern football and footballers. Was very highly rated at Fulham but chose to walk away and sit on the bench as a second or third choice elsewhere for big money.

You have to ask why he appears to have been overlooked by two managers in a row this season. Putting it mildly, it indicates his heart isn’t in it.

Quarshie might be improving, fair point. But he still seems fairly clumsy on the ball, and sometimes appears to be a yard slow in his thinking. Whether his other strengths - speed and size - compensate for that I’m not sure.

Agree with you to a point as Leo and Jander are outstanding. But let’s not lose sight of the fact the same people who signed Leo and Jander were also responsible for Downs and Quarshie.

Oxford haven’t been a regular fixture at all. I remember we played them in 1976 over Easter before the semi-final, then not again until the mid 80’s when we were both in Division One. This was during their Robert Maxwell era when they won the League Cup. I’m pretty sure we played them at their old Manor Ground on a Boxing Day fixture, possibly 1986. Lost 3-1. Think John Aldridge was playing for them.

They don’t make pitches like they used to. It was a real test in those days throwing up something different through the season. An ice rink at times in winter, and a mud bath in spring , threadbare for the last month or so. Not a bloody bowling green designed for knee slides !
