I’m surprised at the criticism of the set up. Once Che was out, the options were limited. People wanting Tall Paul against City are deluded, you need a degree of control over the ball to get crosses in. If anyone thinks Tall Paul is the man to play when you’re going to counter the opposition they need sectioning. Shane Long or Che Adams could do the job, but Tall Paul and the rest, not for me. The great thing about picking our team on here is it never plays, I would probably have gone with Armstrong over Moi, but Armstrong was pony at West Ham. The left back situation was strange as Peraud did ok the last few weeks, but maybe he’s knackered or got a knock. It’s not like we’ve a Matt Le Tiss Branfoot situation, the players left out are as pony as the ones playing. Had we been more attacking, my grandson’s prediction of 1-8 would probably have come true….. First half game plan was excellent and we nearly made it to HT, couple of half chance, particularly when the quick lad got one on one with Ake. Second half they took us to the cleaners, but they’ve done that to far far better sides than us. KDB’s passing, was stunning, sublime, the weight of them perfect. I’ve been lucky enough to see some great players live, including a young Maradona & Bestie, but his touch, passing and vision is right up there.

It won’t “end” badly or otherwise. There’s no “end”, because end implies something stops, what’s going to stop? Balance was always a myth, simplistic pony fed to the people. “Here’s one side & here’s the other” is just horseshite, it’s way more nuanced than that, and “balance” unachievable. I’ll give you a perfect example. Claksons farm (a great watch BTW). The way it’s edited & put together makes it look like petty red tape, local out of touch councillors, horrendous bureaucracy, NIMBYS and Government interference conspire to hamper him making a living. Even as a supporter of a smaller state, I can see that’s the way it’s edited, that an edit could be made to show an alternative side of the debate. And yet there’s no “lies” in there, no political slant and nothing that a quango could say was unbalanced. But it was unbalanced, and probably more powerful for appearing not to be. News reports can be the same, the running order, the emphasis, all sorts can be twisted to create a narrative.

Which is why I said we should wait till the end of the season. He would then had 16 games, that’s a decent number to base a decision on. If he does track at 43/44 you’re basically sacking him because Jones didn’t win enough games. He’d also have a better record this season than Ralph, a bloke you seemed to rate.

When the goal went in I was just like “WTF” it didn’t look like the type of header that should beat a keeper, but it didn’t look like one Baz could have saved. My gut feeling was the “fucking keeper should have got it”, but I didn’t know if that was my bias against him. Thanks to the above posts it’s now clear why I thought that. So thanks for posting. He does seem to concede a lot of goals where I feel he could have done more to stop them. There are the obvious fuck ups, but there’s too many like Sundays where you feel it wasn’t a particularly great effort, but it still beat him easily. I’d be interested in how many others are positioning or footwork errors, stuff that ultimately can be coached out of him and which ones are just the lack of ability.

This season Ralph had 12 points in 14 games, spread out over the season that’ll give you 32/33 points. So it’s clearly not the case we’d have stayed up had we not got rid. We were on a downward spiral, he was finished. Selles has 8 in 7, which would equate to 43/44 points (more than Ralph got last season). There’s enough time left to get a bigger sample by the end of the season, so we’ll know more then. He inherited a chaotic situation, a hostile fan base and a pretty woeful run of results. If he’s tracking at the equivalent of 43/44 points for the season, he probably deserves a crack at next year.

I don’t agree with the line that it’ll be one of the best jobs in The Championship. I think there’s a number of jobs that’ll be as good, if not better. They’ll be a lot of expectations & losing is hardwired into the club the past 2 or 3 years. Burnley looked a mess last season, sacked a long standing manager, before a slight uptick and then relegated. Maybe we could follow a similar blue print with Jose Fonte, maybe James Milner or somebody similar. Of course Kompany was a better player & also managed Anderlecht for a bit as well, but provided a bit of experience was added to the back room team I wouldn’t be against that. It’s probably Selles job to lose with an abject run in, but if we’re within a point of two & his points per game ratio would have kept us up over 38 games I imagine he’ll get the gig. But again, he’ll need a grey beard next to him (not Nigel Adkins, before anyone starts).
