This is the age-old question, do we need someone to cover for a minor injury, or a suspension.....or a long term absence. Probably the reason that we still have Ryan Dickson on the books. He was a useful addition when we were L1, but never in consideration afterwards with Harding and Fox...and the emergence of Shaw. I think we have enough options in the present squad for a short term solution - if needed.... (although I want another CB), but other have shown they CDAJFU (short term). If Shaw were to " disappear ".... for whatever reason - then YES ..another LB.

Where are the points going to come from?
david in sweden replied to Crab Lungs's topic in The Saints
someone published stats. a while back and often 36...can be normally enough (as long as there are 3 teams worse than you). There was one occasion when the fourth team (from bottom) got 40 points. -
......I had roughly the same idea, no-one else seems interested at present and Brum are desperate for cash. As long as L'pool and Everton are getting favourable results, there won't be many other takers......
-
We missed Lallana because he's not there, and my guess is that he's likely to be out for a while longer, so we need to get used to the idea. .....but did you really expect us to get 9 points from our visits to; Fulham, unbeaten Stoke and the return fixture with Arsenal (considering their recent form)? I didn't.

there hasn't been 12 months of football for Guly since his last goal......that's quite extreme. He was joint leading scorer (with 10 goals) up until his last goal in January 2012. After which he started only 7 times and made a few sub.apps......after the arrival of Lee and Sharp, and didn't even make the bench regularly in the meantime. He played in two of the first 4 catastophic games this season (and wasn't the only player to be criticised) and lost his place to RAMIREZ. His only other start was at WHam, until the game at Stoke when I thought that he was a good candidate for MOM .......and aside from the unfortunate OG yesterday.... I thought he put in his share v. Arsenal. Saying 12 months of football sounds quite damning , when he's actually only started about a dozen games and had an hour or so of sub. apps in the that time. Quite unfair.

I agree. I think the OP is just Turkish being a bit controversial ..?? It's good to see that we had a Plan B....and even a Plan C.....but longer term we would miss Adam if he weren't there, but it does give other players a chance to be seen....for better or worse.

TBH....... it's the first time I've been open to the idea of even considering buying Butland....but of course £6 mill. or will it be five? is still a lot of money. My reasons are stated above. I've previously written that we need players in other areas, but the backbone need to be there......Goalie, CB and CF. If anyone really knows about our finances it's Cortese....and he's surely sees the figs. for £60 million...or was it £70 million...or more ? TV sponsorship money and he surely knows that survival means ...another similar sum next season ...come what may....so maybe it's not SO much after all. You have to invest to see results and I'm afraid that many people seem to think that £3million is a lot of money, it is ...... but it's not so much in the Prem. nowadays. Maybe having a £4 million transfer record..... (from 11 years ago)..... seems to blind some to the fact that inflation has been in the football world for the last decade, too As for your complaint about Mayuka....(or anyone else you choose)....when you reply to this ..please tell us WHO you would drop from the present team selection ..in order to play him?
-
...a bit of both perhaps, but not the first time it's happened this season, They should look at this Q. more seriously from game to game.

I've been against the idea of signing (Butland) since day 1....I didn't think that was Prem.class.....and all the press about him and Team GB .etc .....drove everyone mad. Now that Brum are struggling....and very short of cash.....I 'm beginning to think again. IMHO....just now ....he's no better than Gazzaniga....but thats not to say he's no good to us. It seems likely (to me) that this will be KD's last season.......and so... we have a month to see how Artur Boruc works out, and he may be good enough to see out the rest of the season.. IF......we are so close to signing Butland (as the papers suggest)...and Liverpool and Everton aren't going to bother..then WHY NOT? Butland and Gazzaniga both have a lot more to learn......and I don't think either is Prem.right yet ..but ....in a year or two we'd have TWO top-class young keepers vying for the top spot...not such a bad idea.

Saints 1 Arsenal 1 - Post Match Reactions & MotM
david in sweden replied to Lighthouse's topic in The Saints
excellent line-up from the start. Aside from his first few fumbles, Boruc looked calm and safe. Difficult to give just one MOM , Sky gave it ti Jack Cork.....but wasn't Yoshida great, too? Shaw gave as good as he got with the battle with Alex.and Guly very unfortunate o.g........in what was otherwise a good performance from him. Wenger given the easiest point he'll get all season ...without deserving it. Now for Chelsea...with no worries about losing points..... we 'll give them a good game if we can play like that again. -
Whilst I'm fairly sure the OP was about goal-scoring strikers.... I can't help recalling a Dell game where the opposition had a free-kick just inside our half near the touchline. When the ball came down in our penalty area at the Milton end, it was met by the head of John McGrath..who headed it straight back and over the astonished kicker's head ! Knew how to head a ball - did Big John!
-
yeah, but can he head the ball above the CB's armpit?
-
WOW!.....he certainly is special. In fact ..according to your info..he's a man and a half!

The January 2013 HCDAJFU thread...

but I 'd think that any 31 year old player would say he'd be interested to play in the Prem.........given the chance. -

.......AND score goals ........and get back to cover our defence..... and is good at goal-line clearances when the goalie f**ks up ! -
of course, the emotion after the Coventry game is high in my list, but.. (short-lived though it was) ..the moment we went 2-1 up over Man.City in our opening game features pretty high.
-
Aston Villa's bench?.......If they're not playing him as first choice at the moment , it must say something about his form..
-
(Wenger ) ....would also have YET another player to speak French with, as well. What price Schneiderlin?....(or should we leave the Mirror to set a fee for him, too).
-
Hopefully (NOT) at least he's getting regular football here... if Luke were to ask Theo and Alex ....." the right questions...." their answers would probably be ..." don't expect to get any regular games in the first year or two.."
-
There are quite a few others who couldn't make it no matter how much hormones they got fed........Has a bit to do with talent, I think.
-
I don't have ant anti-Pompey aggro so I'll say Good luck to him, at this stage of his career I'm sure ...he's glad to get a club. He did well for us (injuries permitting) and is in illustrious company amongst ex-Saints who played for Pompey at the end of their careers...Mick Channon; Ron Davies..for starters...
-
..alternatively (to my #57) .....I'd go with this, too.
-
obviously Messi was a late developer. There's still hope for the pre-teens then ?
-
If there isn't some sort of unspoken disciplinary measure here. I can only assume it means that NA still hasn't given up on KD and Gazzaniga.after all they are on contracts, and Boruc is only a loan. Personally, I'd play Boruc ......KD has a very limited future....and Gazzaniga great potential ....but he's not PL yet, by quite a way.IMO

I've always been an advocate of having an " away " side and a " home " side, according to the opposition. An extra defender in a 4-1-4-1, or an extra midfielder playing a 4-5-1 I know many managers would say that they like the same team wherever possible, but playing away is an obvious disadvantage and you are on the defensive, far more so than in home games. Of course it may limit your strike force, but we have 10 players who have scored in the league so far this season, and at the end of 95 mins. one point is better than none at all. The top clubs play certain players in Euro games, and different players in the home leg..... but not always the same people in PL games. They may have bigger squads, but in our case.....whereas I wouldn't expect to see Guly in for a home game, I thought he was superb at times yesterday and a candidate for MOM.
