We have income of about 16k and this lump of cash. We have a substantial home with teeny mortgage on which we could draw down up to 100k if an emergency required ( till 2028 ) To earn 6-10k income on bonds would be fantastic. I can't see why we would need instant access or sale of the bonds especially if their maturity dates were staggered, I agree if you sold them mid term you could lose. I suppose if inflation and interest rates rose above 8% it could be a problem.....

I have requested a free ifa appointment through work ( urgently before I leave) But the more I understand before the appointment the more I will get out of it.

These are bonds John Lewis raised a bond to expand their empire. However I just noticed that bond only has months left.

I went to a retirement seminar today and it has thrown the cat among the pigeons. We have £100k that I need an income from for 10+ years Building society =3-4% no risk Buy-to-let= 6-8% risk of damaged to house, risk of falling or rising house prices. Lots of Argo Corporate Bonds=7-10% income... But is there a risk factor? Do the companies need to go bust to lose my money Can I buy 10x£10k in Bt John Lewis M&S 2 electric utilities 2 water utilities Transco 2 banks 2 manufacturers Splitting my exposure to any sector going bust. Utilities are almost guaranteed their income by regulators and being in a monopoly position http://www.hl.co.uk/shares/corporate-bonds-gilts/bond-prices/gbp-bonds?sort=coupon I would appreciate any feedback and how you are qualified to give such opinion Thanks

One would have thought since this fantastic thread started , way back in 2009, that government could have sorted out legislation to resolve the football creditors rule!

3 bed house to let near General Hospital from April

The figures look like 10% yield. Then you have to get gas and electrical safety certs. Building insurance Pay an agent. Travel about to find properties.pay for surveys, solicitors. Do a little maintenance. Then there are rent voids between lets. With flats there are service charges, lease costs. It looks like you can get 2% interest rates but you have to include those "booking fees" And the 2% rate only lasts 2 years. Then it returns to 5%. So £120k costs £2400 interest per year +£1999 booking fee+ £350 survey=£7150 over 2 years So 2 years income could be as little as £3.5k per property. If you are on 40% tax that's a fair amount of risk and work for £2,030 take home pay I personally plan to invest cash, pay little tax. You can of course write of some genuine costs against tax. Interest, Broadband, iPhones iPads , tools, travel. -

Much better than 2.1% you can get on instant access building society accounts. If you have cash to invest you could earn 6-8% if you can find the right house If you are borrowing the money it will cost you 4% after the survey and scam £2000 arrangement fees So your profit is unlikely to be much more than 2-4% The profit is in houses of multiple occupation, houses where you can increase the capital value as well as get a good rent. Turning one cheap house into two flats. HMO's and naff flats come with lots of tenant changes and more hassle. I would rather find solid cheap houses. Fix them up warm, safe, basic but nice and let them to better tenants. -

Countrywide also own most of them round here. Mann and co, Austin Wyatt, Moris dibben to name a few. I found an advertising agency to sell my last house. I had a full ad on right moved for about £350. They got shut down. There is something particularly wrong going on in the AW Shirley branch. The father in law tried to sell his house. They over priced it and then sent round shifty people offering 75% of the value and 10% in 2 years time. We sacked them. -

Your forgiven Bearsy, That's the second time Austin Wyatt have crossed me. What they did was possibly criminal. I strongly recommend people avoid them. They accepted more than one offer. But failed to put the accepted offers to the solicitors to proceed. 14 days later after surveys etc we find out the agent is lying to the vendor and me because I wasn't getting a mortgage via them. -

I don't have a problem with them getting drunk ashore. But when they return to the sub. Parked within 500m of residential and city office blocks where I once worked, in a nuclear sub... Oh and then issue the drunk a machine gun. When they also had visitors on board. Who was managing the risks?

Not value lines. No one has investigated pub meals yet and only one county of school meals. When my mum died of CJD ( school worker ) i was put in contact with another lady from Salisbury , a dinner lady from Salisbury who had complained to the authorities about the quality of the meats. She died of CJD too... Guess what... A meat delivery driver to schools and prisons on the south coast.... Died of CJD. Personally I buy small quantities of chicken and chops and lean steak mince.
