I don’t want to be pessimistic as I have been impressed with a lot of our play over the past two Championship games but the defence does need sorting. It’s early doors but we need good results against Plymouth and QPR as the five games after could really set the tone for the season - Sunderland, Leicester, Ipswich, Middlesbrough, Leeds. All five will be our closest rivals this season.

The Burnley fans have a very high opinion of themselves, suggesting they would beat us on last night’s showing. I think a lot are cloaking their view of us with a touch of arrogance and envy. It was only the lack of finishing that stopped it being a drubbing. I don’t know if that’s solved by playing Che from the start or bringing someone new in. We will punish a lot of teams as the players become more accustomed with the style and they buy into further. Starting off the season with a win was vitally important. Could some of the players linked with moves away be swayed by how well we played last night? We shall see. I was very encouraged by the newfound zip in our play in the games against Goztepe and AZ, and it was great to see us take it up a notch in a league game.

Don Goodman would love nothing more than an equaliser. He’ll never change .
