Am I the only one who sees parallels with Grayson dropping down to manage Leeds to promotion last season? Similar record to Adkins and hopefully a similar outcome. IF this does go through then I'll be delighted, it's a shrewd signing and not the easy 'sign a big name to keep the fans happy' this is a signing with an eye on the short, medium AND long-term (all IMHO of course).
-
Or that fans who know about football are able to overlay all the things they know about the game onto such a table to come up with their own opinion by interpreting the data accordingly. If you want to go and overlay budget (signings and wages) as well as apply a scoring to take into account results in different leagues/cups/champions league etc then you go ahead most other (intelligent) fans are able to have a stab at identifying the strongest candidates without having all that information, ie Mowbray achieved most of his wins in the division above ours, he didn't have ridiculous money to spend and as such would be a good bet for us. O'Neill managed both Leicester and Villa in the prem and as such a lot of his wins were in the prem and although he spent money at Villa he didn't at Leicester, again not rocket science (I'm ignoring Celtic because I don't know what his record there proves).

That is very interesting, clearly MON is lightyears ahead of the rest because his wins were (mostly) at a higher level, Howe is relatively new so not many games. Mowbray comes high up the list and I'm surprised he is not being widely discussed. He got WBA up playing some sublime footie the other year and is currently out of work. Looks the best of the 'realistic' candidates for me.

Is Pardew someone else you're going to follow forever more and take delight every time bad things happen to him? Like Burley Is there a manager in the world who you would actually be happy with Alpine? How many games are you basing your criticisms of AP on BTW?

"Pardew plays the waiting game" on Echo

AMEN to all that. We only find out about the successes, who knows who else we've been in for. If we HAVE been chasing the likes of Benjani, Butt, Vassell then that tells me we're looking for the right type of players and the right level of quality. We'll be fine. -

Yeah how dare Jamie O'Hara selfishly play so well for Poopey last season... Who the hell did that benefit? -
Southampton 1 - 1 Leyton Orient - Post match reaction
(not THE) Kevin Moore replied to Baj's topic in The Saints
Result at this stage are less important than performances. in two games we've created enough chances to win three, Barnard hit the post twice, Lambert looked lively despite being less than fully match fit. Yes it's not a good start and I'm disappointed but we should easily make the points up over the season. N'arch got tanked first game out last season and they won the league. The league is neither won nor lost two games into the season so no time to panic... not that I expect the serial miserablists to take any heed of that. We'll still get promoted this season -
by the looks of him he could probably cover CM/RM as well a competing with RL or perhaps even playing alongside him? Looks class, hence perhaps less likely unless we've flown under the radar and nabbed him out of the blue?

According to Wikipedia, 9 goals in 34 appearances in Serie A last season? Pretty amazing/unlikely stats for a player in our sights?

Hang on, you're telling me to accept the point of view of the least accepting poster on here? Having a debate with Alpine is like trying to reason with a stuck record, far better to just switch it off, which is what I'll be doing shortly. I'm struggling to remember a single Alpine 'contribution'* that didn't cover one of three topics: 1 Game X is a must win game 2 Manager X (it doesn't matter which one, he's hated them all) isn't good enough, let's get someone better 3 We desperately need to sign a new player, preferably this one that no-one had heard of until now and will probably never hear of again but who MUST be amazing rewind and repeat ad infinitum * when I say contribution, I am of course being overly generous, to 'contribute' something suggests 'adding' something to the debate, since pretty much every Alpine post takes away just a little bit more of what used to make this forum worth visiting (like a constant dripping of acid rain) I should probably have said 'subtraction'
-
All very positive then, they're on the case and "it's about getting the right players as opposed to signing someone just to make Alpine happy" Pardew DIDN'T say

Pards has already done some good business strengthening bot full back positions, he has stated the need to bring in other options up front and wide right... so why do people assume he doesnt know what he's doing. It's my guess we know who we want but that we need to wait for other things to be sorted first. It could be that reading are eyeing up a new Right Winger but until they sign him they won't release Antonio. I am going to guess that there will be a late flurry and we might well end up with a couple of players coming in on deadline day. Better to be patient and get quality than sign someone for the sake of signing them.

Who should we get in as Lambert's back up?
(not THE) Kevin Moore replied to modern matron's topic in The Saints
It's genius isn't it? In a minute I'm going to suggest we sign Adriano because he's not the player he once was and would surely relish the challenge of getting us promoted... just so someone can come on here and either call me a mentalist or agree it would be an excellent signing. -

I'm gutted that Kenwyne went to Stoke.... surely we should have been in for him? What top striker wouldn't want to drop 2 divisions? Not to mention his obvious affinity for stripes. -
They must have some fekking big rivers/Sewers in Afghanistan... s'all I'm saying.
-
That's assuming they ARE an ex-employee, which is by no means a given. There are many reasons to question the validity of this view and a lie repeated ad infinitum is still a lie (not claiming he/she is lying but we have no way of telling either way and just because it fits with the general 'NC is evil' vibe on here don't make it true).

I thought Pele was a pretty classy holding MF, he was a poor CB but then I'm sure he didn't ask to be played there. Overall an infinitely better player than Viafara but because Viafara ran around a lot he was a hero while Pele was ridiculed... largely, as I recall, for having the temerity to allow himself to be referred to as 'Pele'

Seriously, if we were ANY kind of fans we'd rally behind the club and NOT behind the fecking SCUM!! Of ALL papers? Seriously? Murdoch cares about as much about freedom of the press as my cat, he's out to exploit whatever money he can from whoever he can. If I went to the Sun for a picture of a Saints game they would CHARGE me for something that they obtained Gratis... so where do saints get their cut? The fact is this has actually INCREASED our coverage in the press and while papers not having access to our pictures won't bother them now, just wait and see how hacked off they'll be should we draw a big name in the FA cup or gain promotion to the PL? They'll be worried then. What Saints fans SHOULD be doing is organising a boycott of the SCUM rather than criticisng the Chairman of our club for trying to exploit a revenue gaining opportunity, mark my words it might not make us much money now, but it would do if we make the PL. And this is NOT about freedom of the press, it's about money, simple as.

To be fair if either Lallana or Lambert had been fit enough to start we'd have won comfortably yesterday, missing both of them was a big blow but when Lallana came on he carved out some very good chances, one for himself and one for Barnard. It didn't help that Harding had a mare in the second half. don't panic mr Mannering.

Where are all these signings then ?

If I were to predict the first person to panic I would have picked you. We're presumably biding our time to ensure we sign players of the highest achievable quality. So I see it as a good thing that we aren't rushing. We could have gone and signed any old toss just to keep you happy but then you'd moan during the season that the team was cack. Southampton doesn't exist to meet your need for instant gratification and luckily most fans seem to have more patience than the average 5 year old. Certainly if Dickson is a sign of the kind of quality we're looking to bring in then I am more than happy to leave it in the capable hands of Pardew and Cortese. -
Southampton plan double swoop for midfield stars
(not THE) Kevin Moore replied to John B's topic in The Saints
The source I read was that he had a clause inserted where he could talk to any club that offerd £500k, so it might have been a deal struck to keep his options open but that ensured the club didn't lose out when he moved on. I'd like to think that not all players are money grabbing mercenaries but time will tell I guess. -
you sir are a genius... Althought I think that it's something of a 'mute' point. Keep it up.

he was brilliant that day..... and THAT DAY ONLY...the rest of his time he was utter garbage, willing and tireless garbage but garbage nonetheless.
