Anyone Else Uneasy About The Money Side Of Things?
KelvinsRightGlove replied to Gemmel's topic in The Saints
Hey, I basically made the same point above -
L'pool aren't the financial powerhouse they once were. We priced them out of Gaston, they also baulked at paying £6m for Dempsey. I think that £12m on Sturridge will prevent them from spending that again anytime soon, or at least until they shift some more of King Kenny's deadwood.

Wolves made around £26m for Jarvis & Fletcher. Not bad really. How much would they have been worth if Wolves hadn't been relegated? Really that much more? -
Whole country is struggling financially, and people are bored of Serie A. Doesn't have the same pull as Prem or La Liga. So, no, not particularly. They are all certainly a few steps behind the spending power of English & Spanish clubs these days.

How is £30m+, making us the 7th highest spenders on the continent, 'doing it on the cheap'? -

Eurgh, there is already a thread for you to make the same moan about that for the 900th time. On the topic of the OP, I do trust a man that appears to be highly respected in the banking world to keep us on track, financially. Given that he has all the details, and all we have to go on is conjecture and speculation I'm not going to get to het up about tiny things, which we often only hear one side (usually those who are aggrieved for whatever reason and no the club) of. Personally, I believe should we go down, we will be ok for money. Our squad will most likley get picked apart, but I reckon we would get a decent fee for our most saleable assets - and in many cases I would suspect a tidy profit. Lambert - if he was to go would probably get a couple of mill - still a profit on the £1.1m(was it about that?) we spent. Gaston - not sure if we would get the full £12m (he's clearly worth it), but I would be surprised if it was less than £10m - specially with £12-14m figures for Jarvis & Fletcher. Lallana - Again, has to be in a similar price bracket to Jarvis & Fletcher surely? Morgan - Not too sure what price he would get, at a guess? £7.5m-£10m? Decent return on the £1m really - not bad for "Biggest waste of cash in Saints History." Corky - About the same as Morgan maybe? Maybe a tad extra for him being English? Either way, what was the fee on him, £750k(ish). Shaw - well, considering what we got for the ox, £10,£12,£15m? Yoshi - I'm not sure on what we paid, £2-3m? Would probably be able to recoup most of that I would have thought. Clyne - looks a snip at the reported £2m fee. Should easily see £5m come in for him. Anyways, not that I want us to go down. And obviously losing these types of players would be a huge loss, however, I think due to how we have spent the money - in comparison to say QPR who will be lumped with stupid wages and unsaleable players. -
I'd much prefer Astori though

Are we better off now that we are out of the FA cup?
KelvinsRightGlove replied to eelpie's topic in The Saints
In fairness we didn't have Rickie, Gaston, lallana or Clyne, which also meant Cork was out position. Some of our best players. That said, early on I think Jay looked lively, I doubt how much more impact Rickie would have had. Would he have been able together into that position like Jay? -
Yeah, I wouldn't take it as gospel. It wouldn't only serve to weaken our negotiating position if he came out saying "we are desperate for a new keeper". Would also leave our 3 current keepers feeling pretty peeved should no deal be done and come Feb these are still our 3 keepers.
-
I would certainly hope if there is one it puts us in a stronger position than the one Newcastle put themselves in.
-
Is anyone aware of whether Gaston has a release clause?
-
That's an interesting story. Didn't realise about his heart troubles. Probably will play on peoples minds after the Muamba case. Shame, I really rate the guy - think he is a very good CM.
-
I'm not saying that just because Everton did it we can. I was merely using their model as an example of how the statement that the Leeds way is the only way isn't true. Probably worth noting by means of comparison, other than players Everton have NO ASSESTS. They don't own their stadium, academy, or training ground. There may be a case that financially, we are on better footing than them.
-
Probably a pretty fair point. Though having seen the impact he had against Chelsea, I would still love him in the squad.
-
Errrm, I'm unsure if you are agreeing or disagreeing with meh? Seems like you are saying a replacement would be good? Diame for £3.5m (according to Saggychops), seems a steal to me.
-
They got £35m for the bloke, it would have been stupid to turn that down.
-
Exactly. I think the ideas are well meaning, but I think in reality they are going to struggle to have much impact at all.
-
I'm intrigued to see how the FFP rules are received. I really struggle to see clubs like United, City, Chelsea, Inter, Real etc being refused entry into the CL for running at big losses. It will only harm the competition, and probably lead to a breakaway eventually anyway.
-
I see Diame apparently has a release clause in his contract. Could be the 'destroyer' type CM we could use at times? though that said I think CM is probably the position we are strongest in with Corky & Morgan. Edit: not entirely sure he would want to leave. But he is a player I do rate highly.
-
Agree they have looked hopeless. That said, I believe Cabaye & Ben Arfa coming back will see them good. That said, people said they were too good to go down in '09.
-
They did lose to QPR...
-
I don't really see how that is the case? As long as the academy is producing, and we continue to be in a decent financial state and a Premiership team, it's only a win win situation. As I said above, if we can keep the players - they can help us push on. If not, Cortese has shown how good he is at getting a deal that suits us. Let's remember we got more for Oxo, a 17 year old with 2/3's of a L1 season behind him, than Everton got from City (the club that spent around £30m+ on Jo and Santa Cruz) for an England International that had 80+ Prem appearances and Europa league experience.
-
I'm not entirely sure. But my old housemate is a massive toffees fan and the view he gave me was the majority of their fans were pretty pleased with the deal. As has been said, he hadn't developed as hoped, and felt that money would be better invested elsewhere, as the side seemed to be stronger without him. In fairness to the club, Moyes & Kenright are very adept at getting good deals for the club.
