Not sure about league 1 clubs, but higher up the leagues there will be a mix of freelancers and staffers. Most of the freelancers will be working specificaly for one paper on a retainer, or one agency, rather than hawking around images after the game. But the issue is any club, bar the top 2 or 3, need newspaper coverage more than the newspapers need the club. Make it difficult for the Sun or whoever they will just say "fine, we won't cover you then, it's your loss".

I think this post sums it up perfectly, including not wanting NC to resign. I do think this episode does illustrate either NC's lack of understanding of British media, or British business culture, or both; either way ML needs to insist he takes on some Non Exec board members to offer advice as this, and some other of NCs decisions, have been poor. In our 125th, year when we want the media to be helping us celebrate, he's lined them up against us.
-
It would help then if NC could actually get along with someone so the job could be completed.
-
I agree, football needs more fools to laugh at.
-
Yeah thats right feck em, despite the fact that they won't buy the clubs photos so less revenue for us. Who cares we showed them. I bet they'll think twice before taking on NC again. LMAO
-
If they do, my moneys on the Sun and the lawyers of News corp, they do this sort of thing every day of the week.
-
I think you're right, NC is all powerful and reports of his charactor suggests he isn't likely to want interference from outside. Which is why some of his more bizzare ideas get implemented when if there was a proper board structure they could have been avoided. I don't think previous board members are the answer, but someone with experience in football, and or media, to help NC from ballsing up on a regular bases.
-
Wow, so falling out with the fourth estate and loosing revenue to the bargain is irrelevant. I wish i lived in your world.
-
I don't think there has been anything like a knee-jerk reaction, nor do i think there is anything like trend bucking ideas. Just people bemused by bad publicity brought on by poor decisions. And all so avoidable, thats the worrying thing.
-
And so, Einstein, the press will delight in printing any and every negative media story they can find. Any unsettling rumour about player unrest. Any story that will rock the boat. Thats the way they do things. All because NC wants to do it his way and didn't stop to consider the implications. There is such a tiny benifit for SFC (if there is one at all), compared to a very large negative impact. And the fact NC couldn't see that is the most worrying thing.
-
So because NC was fundermental in bring in ML and his money, means he is infallible and his decisions should never be questions. We all all delighted that NC arrived when he did, and I hope he, and more particularly ML stays around for some time. HOWEVER, he is making a lot of gaffs, which arguably are the sort that could be avoided with some more experienced help.
-
But as someone has already pointed out, when you **** off the media, especialy when you go around acting like Billy-Big-****** when you're a 3rd Division club, will simply encourage the media to print lots of negative, unsettling stories about you. Nobody in their right mind picks a fight with the British press.
-
First the Echo, now the nationals. Football is a media led business, and ****ing off the Sun is a mistake. You can afford to perhaps tweak the medias nose every now and then when you're Mann United, but we ain't. Anybody who thinks this is not important or even a good thing, doesn't know how the media works, or our status within the football, media, business, pyramid.

Nail on head. 100% agree.

In the good old days, when I was a lad, it was quite normal not only to boo during a game, but to also slow hand clap and chant ' What a load of Rubbish' Happy days.
-
I reckon we would have won had we been wearing Red & White stripes.
-
Possibly the dumbest post amongst a whole thread full of them.
-
I heard Spaghetti was a possibility too, what was your sauce?
-
I don't agree. The supposed link between constant encouragement, with no criticism, and better performance has never been proved. if the team play sh1t they should be bloody booed, although not during the game.

Plymouth rag annoyed at SFC - non-SFC photographers refused entry to SMS

Yet again Cortese shows a poor grasp of business management, short term gain at the expense of long term planning. Thats what you get from bankers running business and this little jerk in particular, who has set a management structure where everyone is too scared to offer good council to him on how things work. Hey-ho, he'll learn eventually. -
A number of threads have appeared on this site over the past months questioning some of the 'alleged' decisions being made by Nicola Cortese. These include, amongst others, preparing to sack AP, refusing season tickets to long standing fans who argue with him, and banning the Echo. I've not idea how much truth there is in these stories, but what does bemuse me is why so many posters on this site are prepared to not question anything the management of 'our' club do. The is a large and vociferous section of posters to this site who jump up and down claim 'treason' against those who posts these allegations. Unchallenged authority is bad authority, whether that is a someone who runs a local league side or FIFA and every point in between. ML is probably the best thing that has happened to Saints for decades, his being here is down to NC, for that we should be grateful. That doesn't mean we shouldn't question his every decision if we want the best for Southampton Football Club. Blindly excepting NC's policies doesn't make you a better Saints fan, to my mind in makes you worse.
-
If deteriorating fast means allowing posts from people who think NC is fallible, and as the CEO of a much loved football club his every decision should be rightly held up to scrutiny, then yes !!!! On the other hand if you believe that the club is not that important and anything those who run decide should be waved through unopposed then lets ban these trouble makers.

90% of news whether it's from the Echo, BBC, ITN etc etc is informed speculation surrounding know facts. The Echo by-and-large does a good job. If you had to wait for the OS for your news you would be the last to know anything.
-
It wasn't sarcasm, and the rest, although tongue in cheek, wouldn't surprise me if it hadn't crossed NCs devious mind. He is demonstrating a worrying lack of empathy with Southampton FC, it's fans, and it's heritage.
-
We're not having the Ted Bates trophy because it was instigated pre NC, just like we don't wear Red And White stripes anymore as they too were pre the savior. Soon to come: Out with 'the Saints' In with 'The Slayers' Out with SMS, in with Twickenham Out with 'Southampton', in with South London.
