  1. I'll ask around The Village.
  2. six
  3. Not sure about the circumstances in this case, but in our recent round of redundancies, women on, or about to embark on, maternity leave were exempted from the process.
  4. Clear at the top of the table, won umpteen on the trot @ SMS,- and room for improvement ! I'll take that :-) "We are Southampton - we're top of the league"
  5. I said 'apartheid style', I suggest you try to improve your cognitive abilities. If you believe that the black majority had any sort of say in how that country was run then you are deluded. "In the colony of Rhodesia the native Africans were ruled by an all-white government in which they were not allowed to participate. Only whites were granted the right to vote and elect the leaders governing their land. Laws were passed which prohibited the presence of Africans in many public places. Ordinances allowed for inequitable distribution the land that provided Zimbabwe's large population of farmers with sustenance. Under these ordinances, 6000 whites seized the best half of the land while the worst half was left to the 600,000 black peasant farmers (Chung 211). During the colonial rule that extended from 1890 to 1979, the white minority dominated and oppressed the native population and divested them of their land." 6. Presumably you would want a return to minority, apartheid style, Government ?
  7. Regardless of who or what might be causing this, we have to accept that it IS happening, and start to look at the consequences for such things as food & water supplies, etc., and there are consequential impacts on climate which could serve to escalate local impacts, such as changes in sea temperature & levels.
  8. Not taking any side in the statistics dispute, but these are apparently the 'facts' : "Since 31 March, there have been more than 26,000 air sorties, almost 10,000 of them involving missile strikes of some kind. UK jets were responsible for 2,000 attack missions. " " Although it did not provide strike aircraft, nearly a quarter of all the air missions involved US planes. It provided all the unmanned surveillance drones and most other spying and refuelling assets. "The US provided invaluable intelligence and surveillance, not least from its unique satellite capabilities,"" http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2011/oct/20/nato-libya-war-26000-missions?newsfeed=true
  9. How very 1930's !
  10. My very limited understanding is that the 'strings' vibrate on the 'branes', and that the harmonic of the vibration determines the nature of the particle observed.
  11. If by 'global affairs' you mean stretching the smokescreen of a mandate to 'protect civilians' to meaning acting as the de facto airforce of a rebel militia, then yes.
  12. Correct, the point was being made that theoretical mathematics has on several occasions suggested the existence of particles, including neutrinos and quarks, that have subsequently been discovered, at that possibly this result is the first step on the path to proving String Theory. I suspect, however, that they are desperately searching for a theory that fits the perceived observation, and that it will all eventually be shown to be a mistake in a formula.
  13. Watched a program on BBC2 last night about this experiment and how the observed results might be explained, inclduing the great amount of effort put into eliminating variable factors and areas of potential error - including the impact of tectonic movements on the distance between the emitter and receiver. Towards the end they went all 'theoretical maths' to show how that field 'allows' things to travel faster than light, and some talking head reckoned that under String Theory it is possible that the neutrinos transiently switched into being tachyons, which by definition MUST travel faster than light, and then reverted before being detected.
  14. No, but he has been seen accompanying a cabinet member on overseas trips, and has 'advisor' on his business cards.
  15. Glad to be of service.
  16. R5 Live Sports Extra if you haven't got Saints Player
  17. I think this is the key point - if you subscribed to the line of thinking best summed up by the Sun, it was all the fault of those nasty scouse thugs. If, however, you listen to the survivors and eye witnesses, most of the problems were due to poor Policing and stewarding, funneling people down into areas that were already over-full and from which those at the front had no escape due to the fences boxing them in. Also, once the true picture started to emerge, there were, and still are, questions over the response of the Police etc, in failing to open the fences and delays in permitting medical assistance into the ground. Subsequent the events, there was controversy over the handling and scope of the enquiry and coroner's inquests, specifically over the limiting of these to events prior to 15:15 pm. It is felt up here in the North West that these enquiries were deliberately constrained to avoid 'awkward truths' emerging. And I remember the day vividly as I was in hospital listening to R5 - waiting for a theatre to be freed for an emergency operation.
  18. He has resigned according to the BEEB http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-15300751
  19. No it doesn't. In this case the firm employs over a thousand people and 2 of them have been 'let go' for whatever reason, and have gone crying to the press with their own version of 'Is it because I am white ?", whereas the story indicates of one of the women "In disciplinary letters, she was accused of violence, discriminating against other workers on grounds of nationality and language and was told her paperwork was a “shambles". Not at all like a Tory rag to prejudge anything so as to play up it's xenophobic stance.
  20. Have they ? I thought all 3 services were being cut. We have had a view from the RN, are there any squaddies or airman on here who could give their view of Dr Fox's restructuring of our defence capability ?
  21. Apologies for the poor quality of my reading and analytical skills today.
  22. "May as well compare us to the isle of Mann if we are at it" Sorry to be pedantic Um P, it's either 'Mann', or the 'Isle of Man'.
  23. Not much to disagree with there.
  24. So we know things are bad when 'Desperation' takes off ?
