And as for the equal population size, how frequently would you want the boundaries redrawn to compenaste for changing demographics ? Also, when the boundariess are redrawn, what attention is being paid to balancing the spread of potential political support ? It would be quite easy to realign boundaries such that the support for any specified party is diluted to the point of being ineffective.

And the proposed gerrymandering to reduce the number of MPs and change constituency sizes also works in their favour. As has previously been debated at length, the problem with FPTP is that only about 10-15% of electors, those in the 'swing' seats who are open to being manipulated by the respective manifestos, select the Government.

It was the culmination of a 2 -3 year plan which involved getting sufficient riders onto the pro tour to then gain enough points to qualify the numbers for this race, and then Wiggins, Millar, etc rode themselves to exhaustion at the head of the field for most of the race to set Cav up. A brilliant team effort and a trademark finish from the Missile. And don't forget GB came top of the overall medal table with Wiggo's silver in the time trial & Emma Pooley's 3rd in the women's pro road race, and 1 each of gold, silver, and bronze in the junior races. ( And HTC Highroad riders won 3 of the 4 senior road races - not bad for a team that's about to fold )

But surely the way the timing is done is that the two ends of the route are using a common reference time source and the elapsed flight time is taken from the observed departure time at one end and the observed arrival time at the other. Therefore, as time is relatively slower at the Italian end, ( as it is travelling faster with the rotation of the Earth ) the recorded time taken with reference to the common time source will be earlier than expected, hence the travel time is recorded as less than it should be, and the neutrinos appear to be going faster. Yes, but unlike the banks, these failing businesses were not 'too big to fail' and unable to ask for a Government bailout. I am not arguing the semantics of job security in the public & private sectors, where I admit there is more 'risk' in the private, ( but don't assume the public sector had been immune prior to the last 12 months ). The difference between public & private sector employment is that quite a lot the public sector is not operating in a commercially competitive environment, and the 'business' will never be in a position to 'fail' - be it the NHS, the Fire Brigades, the Police, or even the Civil Service. What I am countering is the assertion that public sector pay is (1) higher in a like for like comparison, and (2) has been afforded inflation indexed pay rises, which I can tell you from bitter experience is patently untrue.

Between 1993 and 1999 the public workforce was squeezed and downgraded: there were severe shortages, as always happens if pay falls too far behind the world outside. There was a good catch-up between 2000 and 2004: nurses and teachers were recruited and pay rose. But from 2005 until now, pay was cut back again: 2% across the board was the rule. Last year when inflation was 4% the public sector got 2.5%." And then, of course, there is the old chestnut about 'average' pay being higher in the public sector : "But there are five times more unskilled workers in the private than the public sector. In fact most are getting their pay cut in real terms, not just in relation to inflation, which the Government is fudging by switching the index used to measure it.
