It is a word, no more, no less. The offensiveness is decided by how that word is used. If a person is using it to denigrate the person it is directed at it becomes offensive. You might not care for the word, but it is all about how the word is used. The C word is often used to denigrate another person but it can also be used between friends as in “Hello Bill, how are you doing you old c*nt”? You may well find the N word offensive, but black people using it between themselves clearly don’t. Granted, it is strange that people use pejorative terms between friends, but then people are strange aren’t we?

I am surprised that there are people who don’t seem to understand the difference between a white person using the N word in a pejorative way and a black person reappropriating the same word as using it as a positive rather than a negative to take the power away from its primal use. The same thing happens with Spurs supporters using anti Semitic terminology to their own ends. Or perhaps l’m not given the posting history of those who miss the point.

The United Kingdom and the Death of Boris Johnson as we know it.

Chinese virus? Are we going to start identifying diseases as we do humans now? You sound like Donald Trump. -
I need to add Russell Howard to my list. Terminally unfunny.

Sadly football is an area that has a major world stage and where racism is still prevalent. How do you ignore it in the sport when players like Sterling are getting racially abused when they walk onto the pitch? It needs to be fought and stamped out where it is occurring, that is why football cannot just ignore it and move on.

Boris Johnson shedding yet more responsibility. Who would have thought it? It makes you wonder why he went for the job in the first place. He seems to be spending very little time doing it. Still, if the rumours are true about his extra curricular activities with two lady journalists then he clearly doesn’t have the time to do any PMing in between knee tremblers. -
Isn’t their point that the majority of crime is carried out by non black people? These figures would appear to back that up. There are also no figures here to show how many black people are killed by the police either by being taken into custody or in custody against the numbers for white people.

Very sad news about the passing of Peter Green. I grew up with the music of the first Fleetwood Mac and he was a brilliant guitarist, vocalist and songwriter. RIP.

It seems like everyone has had a chat with Jim Steele, so l’ll add myself to the list. Nice chap. The same evening I had a brief chat with Rupert Lowe! I only realised who he was as he walked away.

I didn’t say it was causing harm, I said it had caused a problem, hence the name being removed. Perhaps if your were black you might see the situation differently? Have you realised that racism is still a problem in professional football yet?
-
Did you stop to consider that it did zero harm for so long because so few people knew about it? Now that more people know about it is more of a problem. Funny that.

I prefer his work to something like Ermin’s unmade bed, but each to their own.

A fact it is, as it is a fact that it is a derogatory term for black people and giving that name to a black dog, even back then, was hardly the best idea. We don’t need to keep watching the Black and White Minstrels going to remind us of how offensive blackface is. History has recorded that Guy Gibson had a black dog which was named after a derogatory name for black people. Do we need to have it spelt out to us in order to learn lessons?

Yet at the time certain people were questioning why there were so many marches each week? I suppose the minute Premiership players stop taking the knee we will get told again that the campaign is over when it has clearly only just begun.

An amazingly sensible post. There is hope for this place yet!

She’s British. She is our problem and she needs to be dealt with here. No brainer.

You realise that there are and have been plenty of very able and competitive white long distance runners do you? Do you know what racial stereotyping is do you?
-
There are no decent white long distance runners then? What ethnicity was Lasse Viren for example? Steve Ovett? I’m sure there are one or two more.
-
No it’s not racist to point that out, but it is lazy stereotyping.
-
Yes I did thanks. I wasn’t referring to cyclists but long distance runners. Not sure why we are continuing to feel the need to put human beings into pigeon holes depending on race, religion or gender. Different people are good at different things depending on so many different factors.

So no skinny white Europeans with big lungs?

Some idiots apparently chanting Rule Britannia at the marchers supporting BLM in Brighton today. That’s the spirit!

How many black coaches are there in professional football in this country? Is it because non of them are good enough? Funny that only white people make good football coaches. Yes, I worked for The Guardian and left 20 years ago so I can’t say what it is like now, but then there were no black people around. Yes I also worked for the CPS in Kent up to 6 years ago and there were some Asians but very few black people in our region. From memory there were 2 black prosecutors but no black support staff. When you have extremes it is often the case that an opposite extreme happens before there is a balance. Whilst I don’t agree with the principle of positive discrimination, I can see the need for it until there is an evening up. There are plenty of jobs where black people could do them as well as white people, but it is very clear that they aren’t given the same opportunities if you look at the stats. Football is a prime example. There are plenty of black players at the top level now, wouldn’t you expect to see more move into coaching positions? It’s not as if they aren’t interested. If things are going to change for any minority groups, their voices need to be heard in positions of power and yes, in daily meetings where decisions are made. The point where we reach proper equality will be when no one comments in the amount of minority groups in meetings or in positions of power. It would seem that is still a long way off.

So is it better to be a “so called liberal” or is it better to be xenophobic? Asking for a friend.
