WGS for DOF was a good idea before AP became manager. If one is ever appointed, I trust it will be someone who AP approves of (painful memories and all that). Relationships between the two jobs are pretty crucial. And Pardew seems to be enjoying how things are right now. I personally hope we never have a DOF, unless in years to come, AP having led us to new heights -like Ted Bates did - takes on that role with a younger up-and-coming manager below him, like Ted did. (How nice it is to dream. Meanwhile, one match at a time!)

But the empty red seats in the Itchen North wing were clearly visible on the BBC's video, which contrasted poorly with packed crowds around the goals and wings in other (smaller) clubs grounds. You know very well that fans on this site have been clamouring for more seats available for Saints supporters closer to the visitors, as close to the goals as possible. There has never been a shortage of takers for this. What it would mean is that there would be fewer fans dispersed around the ground. It would be good to have fans behind the goal again, but the club is always going to maintain a barrier either side of the visitors. The width of these could be reduced imho. Pardew has said he never felt he was bringing his former clubs to an intimidating atmosphere at St Mary's This has to change.

I've just watched the BBC's League 1 Review, and could not help noticing that St Mary's was the only stadium with empty seats behind the goalmouth. It really is important that Itchen North wing is re-opened imo. The atmosphere gendered is worth points. Points equals income which would pay for the relative cost of stewarding this section. I reckon it is worth beginning a campaign to re-open the Itchen North wing. Closing Itchen North wing is the club's first own-goal of the season.

Yes, so many of us have been complaining of Saints inability to stay the course. All teams knew we weakened towards the end of matches and profited from it. Even when we had a team full of internationals. Wotte's soft early pre-season training is going to cost us, and we don't have much time to build up physical strengths without that dead leg feeling during matches. But at least the diagnosis is spot on.

Not that you are probably wrong, but your post reminds me how unambitious so many of our supporters are. We expect the manager to be positive, so we must be too. We supporters must get out of the ' nobody any good is going to come here' mode. Supporters need to be ambitious too.

It is tragic that we lost Dyer imho, not least due to the rubbishing he got from our fans. His speed was awesome. And most likely the same guys that dissed him are now complaining that our attack is slow. And so true about our midfield

I don't really want to keep this historical thread running, but as I understood it, once Fry had given Pinnacle exclusivity (having been duped into thinking the money was forthcoming) his Hobson's choice gave him no alternative but to play for time in the hope that other interested parties would return, which they did - eventually. He did reiterate that we nearly folded. Crouch's money on behalf of Pinnacle was paying wages for a while only. One day, perhaps, Duncan may have the facts for his next book. Thank goodness Nicola and Marcus did not give up waiting. It must have been a close run thing.
