Saint_clark Posted 10 October, 2009 Share Posted 10 October, 2009 I think you need to ENJOY the f*cking win, you miserable old bastard. EDIT: only joking. I know you're happy with the win, and I agree with you. But I for one would rather look forward with optimism rather than expecting us to fail. alpine_saint Posted 10 October, 2009 Author Share Posted 10 October, 2009 I think you need to ENJOY the f*cking win, you miserable old bastard. What a bizarre response. Are we back in the Premiership already ? Did I miss something ? Its a perfectly valid topic of discussion. If you dont like it, ignore the thread instead of provoking an argument. I see the "la-la-la" hands-on-ears Positivity Community are out early this morning... EDIT. Fair enough. I still think how AP responds is a fascinating prospect. After all, he went very public about the complaicency after the Yeovil game

Oldham will still be a tougher test than Southend, if we lose there it won't be much of a disaster, but 6 points from Dons and Orient is a must for me. david in sweden Posted 10 October, 2009 Share Posted 10 October, 2009 (edited) ...is as much about how they maintain focus and momentum in the face of a few excellent wins, as much as how they respond to a defeat. What do you think ? I think the answer is in the old adage......taking one game at a time. Of course it was good to rest a few players on Tuesday, but as we saw no-one is a "walk-over " in any game..even Torquay. All managers and players want to win every game, occasionally you lose games you really should have won..but as you seem to be suggesting Alpine, we need to be best prepared for every game as it comes, and the last result (whether pleasing or not).... is only history. AP has been in the game a long time as player and manager at different levels, and he should know what to do / how to prepare in every game, then IF... the players do their stuff on the pitch..we're all happy. I am often reminded of an old quote from ; Lawrie McMenemy (surely one of our best managers). " as manager you can never win , you are only as good as your last game... ..if we win, the fans say the team played well. If we lose, it's my fault 'cos I picked them ".. (never a true-r thought !) I'm sure AP knows that, too. Edited 10 October, 2009 by david in sweden
Toadhall Saint Posted 10 October, 2009 Share Posted 10 October, 2009 Agreed Alps - great teams and great managers have focus and drive aligned with total belief. I think we are lacking a little in belief but after the last 3 results that belief is growing. The likes of AL and MS are proof, I feel both of them are starting to turn in good performances. That is no mistake so my plaudits go to AP and the back room staff.

What do you think ? Do sense I the wind of change in your thinking from being particualrly negative to considering on how you will now how you judge whether Pardew measures up against being an ok manager or a great manager. Couple more wins Alps and I think you may be pinning a pardew poster on your bedroom wall
krissyboy31 Posted 10 October, 2009 Share Posted 10 October, 2009 Confidence plays a massive part in maintaining a winning run. and the more results we can string together the more confidence and so on..... It's self perpetuating. The trouble is we have been on a downward spiral for so long now that we can hardly remember being in that position. The last time I can remember us going on such a run was when we made the dash for the play-offs.

Couple more wins Alps and I think you may be pinning a pardew poster on your bedroom wall I have never called for his dismissal, and never claimed to be intractible in my beliefs. I saw two of the earlier games and was impressed I was not impressed with a couple of our results and performances a couple of weeks ago This week I feel we are finally on to something......... That could change if Oldham make monkeys out of us, however. As I say, lets see how manager and team respond to an impressive week.
saint_stevo Posted 10 October, 2009 Share Posted 10 October, 2009 Cant think we have turned a corner until we pull out of the bottom 4.......but a decent brake before the next game should allow AP to get out on the training pitch with em and get em going. Oldham away up next, tough game, followed by another tough one against MK Dons
madruss Posted 10 October, 2009 Share Posted 10 October, 2009 Have to agree with that, we've got a real chance to build some serious momentum now. There are signs that a winning mentality is being instilled in this team, the real test will be maintaining that over time. The signs are very positive so far though

Falling to pieces at Oldham should not change this feeling that we are starting to have. In the bigger scheme of things with the players now in a fast learning curve hiccups along the way are a vital part of the "building" of the great team & manager conbination. AP comments that the "shock" of the Bristol result seesm to have been a spur to make the next step, so as long as we only get occassional monkeys we're learning. Also, we should never discount the impact of fate or luck. Who on this forum or even in the SMS management team would have imagined that Wotton's arrival as a proper DM would be the key to us having our "Happy Week". While he may not be the answer, at least we as fans have now been able to see what AP was trying to do with the shape of our team. Still, don't worry, it's football, somehow somewhere it always get's screwed up:-)

Three wins on the trot but all you can think about is what happens when we lose again, which we will at some point. Every silver lining has a cloud.
