modern matron Posted 18 October, 2009 Share Posted 18 October, 2009 Have been away hence asking how has he done? Is he the lightning quick winger we need or will he going back to Reading soon?

S-Clarke Posted 18 October, 2009 Share Posted 18 October, 2009 Have been away hence asking how has he done? Is he the lightning quick winger we need or will he going back to Reading soon? He's not just quick - he's direct and very strong, which is rare for out and out wingers these days. I've not actually seen him yet (going by the commentators descriptions/other fans ratings) - but at the moment he sounds like the perfect impact sub. Pard's said it was an initial 1 month loan to have a look....i reckon that'll be extended.
Fergie Posted 18 October, 2009 Share Posted 18 October, 2009 I came down with 4 mates from uni for the Torquay game and thought it was utter rubbish...got taken off at half time for fish and thought we'd never see him again. Honestly thought he was the new Ali Dia and that Pards would send him back to Reading the next morning! Although reading reports from others about how he was yesterday sounds like maybe it was just a blip against Torquay...or was yesterday just a lucky one for him where everything went right!!!? Looking forward to seeing how he is at Orient in 2 weeks time, hopefully he'll come on a score a hat-trick and prove me wrong!! lol.
Stu Man Do Posted 18 October, 2009 Share Posted 18 October, 2009 I think the main question after the Torquay game for me was, can he actually cross!? Pretty important winger. Seems to be very direct just needs a bit of crossing practice!
Asaint4ever Posted 18 October, 2009 Share Posted 18 October, 2009 came on yesterday and was very quick, strong, skillfull, and put a few decent ball in the box! give him a chance he could be a good strong winger.
The9 Posted 19 October, 2009 Share Posted 19 October, 2009 I thought he was alright against Torquay, crossing wasn't all that bad, though he didn't seem to offer much we didn't already have in the squad except a bit of strength compared to smaller players who've played there like Thomson and James. Pardew has already said he's one for the future... maybe.
Saint Fan CaM Posted 19 October, 2009 Share Posted 19 October, 2009 Mmm, he seemed to me to be very similar to the likes of Dyer for example - i.e. players that we have home-grown. And yet I have to say that the few brief glimpses I have seen of him play perhaps show he has that little bit extra - I would imagine that we will extend his loan if Reading allow that. Seems to be very direct just needs a bit of crossing practice! Never stopped Terry Curran from pursuing a career as a winger..... As well as Chicken George Papa's on loan, he develops well while here he may be out of our reach when the opportunity to buy him comes around, seems Antonio is a useful back-up/cover option as well... If Papa is injured or having an off day we don't have to change our style or pace of play too much by putting (for example) James out there Anyone else noted how we now have a RM player instead of the days under GB et al with "whichever CM was left over"
SaintDonkey Posted 19 October, 2009 Share Posted 19 October, 2009 I thgink in terms of skill he's no better than Jake Thomson, and in terms of speed he's probably slower. But he has the strength to battle his way past defenders where Jake would go down like a sack of nine pins - and that's what we need in this division. I hope Reading let us hang on to him. And I hope Jake looks at why Antonio is in the team ahead of him and ups that side of his game.

You might be right with that, but I don't expect Jake will be adding 3 stone of muscle mass in the near future, nor should he.
Hopkins Posted 19 October, 2009 Share Posted 19 October, 2009 Think he's just a stop gap untill McLaggon is fit imo. At the end of this month loan deal McLaggon will have had another couple of reserve games under his belt and will probably take his place. Maybe Antonio will stay for 1 more month just to make sure. chrisobee Posted 19 October, 2009 Share Posted 19 October, 2009 Is he like George Lawrence? (whatever happened to George?) I like this quote: According to Holley & Chalk's "The Alphabet of the Saints", he "soon brought added meaning to the word unpredictable". He was "full of strong surging runs" and "would, when remembering to take the ball with him, completely perplex opposing defenders and cause havoc in the penalty area". Very good description !! Lets B Avenue Posted 19 October, 2009 Share Posted 19 October, 2009 Is he like George Lawrence? (whatever happened to George?) Bought my first house off him, off Upper Deacon Rd in 1988. He had transferred to Millwall a few months earlier.

mcjwills Posted 19 October, 2009 Share Posted 19 October, 2009 Is he like George Lawrence? (whatever happened to George?) Strange ole Chicken George as George Lawrence was to be come known as a result of a TV program ROOTS, nowadays we would be called racists for the name that he was associated with. To my knowlege when ever he was in my local pub he was never offended by the name.
