News from 'That other place' that Dave Burnside passed away on Friday.

No details as yet.

R.I.P. Dave

A brilliant ball juggler when a youth player at WBA, on tv at half time interval gave a display keeping the ball up the whole half time.

He was a good player for us in the early sixties.

That is very sad news. I remember Dave with some affection as one of my boyhood heroes back in the mid 60's. Not only a great ball juggler, but a really good 'inside left' and a really nice guy too.

R.I.P.Dave, thanks for your contribution to my life.

Great player for Saints, Fondly remember his superb display at White Hart Lane when we thumped Forest 5-0 in the second replay of the fa cup after a 1-1 at Forest and 3-3 at the Dell. If my memory serves me right I think he scored one maybe two but I remenber how he ran the game. Great Inside Left

R.I.P. Saint Dave

I remember David Burnside as a fixture in the Saints side when I was in my teens but had forgotten until now some of the fantastic things he did. In 1963, Saints were in Div2 and had a great cup run to the semi-finals. The quarter final was against Notts Forest then in Div1. After a draw at Nottingham, Saints were 3-0 down in the replay at The Dell with 16 minutes to go. They scored twice and then Burnside scored the equalizer in the 89th minute. In the second replay at White Harte Lane Saints beat Forest 5-0 with Burnside scoring two of the goals! A great player with a firm place in saints history. He would have been 70 this year, so very sad that he has gone too soon.

I had a Dave Burnside badge (replaced my Don Roper one!!).

Remember him first doing 'keepy uppy's' at half time in a rare (Black & white) televised game. WBA v some E European team. He would have been around 16 at the time. I was allowed to stay up to watch the game on our Radio Rentals Sobell 14" TV

He then came to Saints with Stuart Williams & George Kirby. Not the fastest player but a lovely left foot which sprayed balls inside the full back for Syddy to sprint onto.

Scored in the epic N Forest 3-3 game in 1963.

Went on to play for Palace (I think) and didnt behave v gentlemanly when we played them in the Cup(?)

Took the edge of my impression of him but still did v well dyring his timewith the Saints. RIP

WEST Bromwich Albion are deeply saddened to hear of the sudden passing of former inside forward David Burnside, who died of a heart attack yesterday evening.

He did not play for us for many games as he was sold when Ted Bates bought Jimmy Melia in 1964 who helped us greatly to get to Div 1.

However I will never forget Burnsides goal against Nottm Forest in 1963 QF Replay when he equalised after Saints were 3 0 down with 12 mins to go.

An excellent player though I do remember him coming back with Crystal Palace in an FA cup match and upsetting us fans greatly

We're probably the same generation " Professor " , I remember when Dave Burnside arrived at The Dell in 1962 - around the same time as George Kirby and Stuart Williams. We'd had one of those infamous nightmare season starts and were bottom with only one win and a draw after 8 games. Kirby was the toughie, rugged journeyman CF and often gave more than he got and really cut up defences.

WBA must have thought RB Stu Williams (then 32) was on his last legs, but he gave us 100% every game till he was past 36. But Dave Burnside was the quiet star. Great passer of the ball, a really superb left foot and no mean goalscorer either. While George O'Brien scored his usual 20+ goals a season, David hit 14 goals in his first season, and even bettered Kirby's goal tally (if I recall).

Others have quoted those spectacular FA Cup games we had (after later recovering our form) and due in no small measure to Dave Burnsides great midfield dominance (alongside the splendid Ken Wimshurst in right midfield).

Despite only having 70 outings, DB scored a respectable 22 goals (but made dozens for others ) and he has a place in the Hall of Fame for many of us, purely recalling his ball skills - and of course his total contributions in that great season ' 62-63.

Spot on post. For the younger generation it is difficult to pass on the passion and enjoyment of the 3-3 draw and 5-0 walloping of Nottm Forest (in which Dave Burnside was a prime arcitect) and the following 1-0 Cup Final win v Man Utd.

I played local football with Stuart Williams in his later years. An opposing player once told him he was a 'has been'. Stuart retorted by saying 'well its better than being a never wasser'!!

Good times!!

David Burnside was a real football artist in the early sixties when I could get to the Dell often. A hero then and respectfully remembered now.

Some of the other names of Saints players mentioned in this thread invoke wonderful memories too, but for me, DB was an icon of stylish football.
