trousers Posted 11 November, 2009 Share Posted 11 November, 2009 We're now winning games when we don't play at the top of our game. Sign of a superb team. Well done chaps.

pilsburydoughboy Posted 11 November, 2009 Share Posted 11 November, 2009 A great performance tonight against a team who are second in the league. Great Stuff.
Under Weststand Posted 11 November, 2009 Share Posted 11 November, 2009 Agreed that is what will get us up the league, there will be games that we don't play well in & we will have to grind out results. We seem to have the team spirit & players able to do this now. Also we are now doing it against the top teams in our division we've now beaten 2 & 3rd in the league, in recent weeks & reasonably comfortably IMHO. SNSUN Posted 11 November, 2009 Share Posted 11 November, 2009 I thought we did play well tonight, fully deserved to win. I know Charlton are in poor form, but they're still second in the League, and on this showing we can beat anyone. Looking forward to playing Leeds and Norwich now. AlfredKo Posted 11 November, 2009 Share Posted 11 November, 2009 I will never say the team did not play perform brilliantly tonight. The first half we were almost in total control in all sorts of areas. Our goal in the second half was just eliminating them from our own half to just outside their box. Charlton was poor but that may reflect the standard of the teams in this division. Even a below par Saints team can still majority of the teams in the top half of League 1. krissyboy31 Posted 11 November, 2009 Share Posted 11 November, 2009 We weren't at our best but were sooo much better that Charlton and could and maybe should have won by 3 or 4.
Fitzhugh Fella Posted 11 November, 2009 Share Posted 11 November, 2009 Thought Pardew's after match comment was spot on RE OUR PERFORMANCE - a bit "sloppy". Mind you, their goal was offside (the winger who made the original cross) but I still think Saints made hard work of the last 15 minutes. I like the way Pardew talks - everything he says makes sense and he doesn't mince his words. Very refreshing! Back to the game - positives - Waigo, a player I'm not keen on up to now but his defensive abilities stood out and I thought he looked good going forward. He and Antonio together should be an asset. Bart - did not put a foot wrong! Don't feel confident with him between the sticks but did OK tonight. A good confidence booster. Marcus Liebherr - good to see he is prepared to come to SMS for a minor cup-tie and he looked well-pleased with life when the Sky cameras picked him out. Connolly and Lambert - both class acts! Negatives - not sure about James in midfield, Schneiderlin's injury, Lallana's flouncing and Thomas's distribution. Still some work to do but Pardew has instilled a winning mentality and that is half the battle. Well done to the fans that turned up tonight - I took the weak option. TV! I really don't. I agree we were sloppy, I don't think we played particularly well at all but I thought James was the MOM.

I agree we were sloppy, I don't think we played particularly well at all but I thought James was the MOM. Just didn't think he contributed positively. He made some good tackles but his passing was crap. He is becoming an integral player but he needs to put a bit more thought into his game. Prefer him at right-back. The sky commentator kept picking him out all of the 2ndhalf saying how well he had played and what a good prospect he was. Seemed decent to me to be honest! Cracking tackle to take out ol' John jo cant really pick fault with him.

(Who was married to my old school secretary and who I once lectured at a cricket dinner about his lifelong mistake of supporting the wrong team in Hampshire... to be fair at the time Pompey were shyte and we were in the rarified air of the Premeirship...) saint1977 Posted 11 November, 2009 Share Posted 11 November, 2009 I've not been a fan of James but thought he did well at RB first half and was good in CM second half - reminded me of Phil Neville a bit and really subjected Shelvey to a couple of bone-jarring but fair tackles which I liked to see. Our final ball wasn't as good as recent games but great to see Antonio and Waigo on the same pitch and considering that Charlton are second: - Scored twice - Hit the post after a good save from their goalie - Had a blatant handball turned down - had that been a league game and we'd had fans in the Chapel going beserk that would have been given as well - Bart had little to do before the last 15 minutes The fact we can play 20% better and still dominate a side like Charlton who would do alright in the CCC shows you how far we've travelled since August IMO. Shame on you Thanks to DD getting extra tickets (I thought I was going to be away) I was able to go. Enjoyed the game. Enjoyed another win. Enjoyed winning in front of the Sky cameras. Enjoyed our front play, the way our midfield defended when we did not have the ball but moved forward when we did and a pretty decent display at the back. That is 10 of the players on the pitch today who have scored this season.
