Rory Posted 1 December, 2009 Share Posted 1 December, 2009 Seriously excited at the prospect of coming up with this year's lists (as ever). I'll give it until just before Christmas until I'll post mine. There have been some proper good albums and songs this year that it's going to be difficult to come up with these definitives!! Well done on posting the first list, Pancake.

Nineteen Canteen Posted 1 December, 2009 Share Posted 1 December, 2009 Nobody mentions the mega selling offering from Susan Boyle, I find that surprising that so many people can be that wrong. Then again behaviour on our beloved TSW has shown that popular opinion isn't always right compared with a balanced and critical assessment. Anyway I still can't get past the golden period of prog / heavy rock so I would like to nominate my most listened to albums of 2009: Led Zep 1 Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon UFO - Strangers in the Night Hawkwind - Space Ritual Supertramp - Breakfast in America (The greatest concept album ever?) Deep Purple - Live in Japan Genesis - Selling England by the Pound Not ten but 7 cds that have permanent residence on my cd changer and player in my car. Wowzer ... 19C ..... we do have something else in common besides not being particulary excited by golf but with a few small changes..... Led Zep I'd have to go for Led Zep II or IV Supertramp ...Crime of The Century Any Floyd album would do but possibly Animals or Wish You Were Here edges out Dark Side (probably due hearing it too much) Side 1 of The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway is right up there with Selling England. Made in Japan .... minus The Mule please!! Never got into UFO so I'd have to replace them with either Barclay James Harvest Live or Yes with Going for The One or Close to The Edge. Finally you dark horse you .... Hawkwind's Space Ritual ...... completely 180 degrees from the type of music I'd think you'd be into ... great choice. Wishbone Ash I would have included the following: Wishbone Ash - Argus Jethro Tull - Stand Up King Crimson - In the Court of the.... However, I only have them in vinyl and so don't listen to them regularly as I woud like. I know what you mean about Dark Side but it's still got that 'sumptuous' feel to it when you don the head phones and give it a real listen. Over elaborate, over produced and perhaps a lesson in perfectionism but undeniably has stood the test of time. Led Zep II and IV are brilliant albums but I prefered them at their blues influenced best and although III isn't quite as good 'Since I've been loving You' is one of their best songs - not the best as that is an impossible choice but very much a favourite. As for Hawkwind what can I say - memories of a great youth especially at the Stonehenge summer solstice free festivals before fisticuffs in corn fields ruined it all. I remember one year watching Hawkwind at Stonehenge as it started to get light and you could see the druids gathering in the distance behind the teepees and make shift tarpaulin tents and Dave Brock entering some kind of trance like state not unlike the very laid back crowd. Glastonbury and £250 a ticket- no thanks - we had all that for free and not a piece of gortex or a phone box toilet in site. Incidentally those services were provided by a big circular gravel pit dug out special for the occassion. You haven't lived until you have dumped in a big circle of fellow dumpees to drunk or spaced out to care. Did learn a valuable life lesson on these occassion and one I have passed on to my family when the time was right. Never take a dump facing down hill, logs roll if you miss your target. What no JLS, Alexandra Pratt, Leona Lewis or Susan Boyle? Saints fans not conforming to the popular misconceptions. If only our opinions on the main forum were as eclectic as our musical opinions. Driving to the game last night and waitng for Solent Sports to start I caught the last few minutes of a track from Shirley Bassey's new album the name of which I missed. The track was called Apartment and was written for her by Rufus Wainwright. Has anybody heard it? It sounded very good last night in amongst a sea of dross on the airwaves. No doubt though the rest of tracks on the album are nowhere near as good.

jeff leopard Posted 2 December, 2009 Share Posted 2 December, 2009 Like others on here, I've not listened to much new stuff this year. Instead, I've been ploughing through Kraftwerk's back catalogue and loving every second, and compared to that, pretty much everything else pales into $hit. The early front runners for best of 2009 were Animal Collective and Grizzly Bear, but since the initial excitement, neither have made a particularly deep impression on me (recently I've spent more time listening to AC's Strawberry Jam). Thanks to Spotify I've had a listen to some of the albums nominated so far - quite like the Artic Monkeys album in a mozzer/QOTSA kind of way, but wasn't grabbed by either Little Boots or Florence + the Machine. I'm going to have to spend some cash on the new Tortoise and Lightning Bolt albums, but so far, it feels like I'm yet to hear the best of 2009. I'll be surprised if they haven't heard of it as Suggs was doing teh PR rounds even on breakfast telly, and why not? If it's good enough fro Sian and Bill it's good enough for us all surely. Norton Folgate is interesting though a small area of Shoreditch in London that until the early 20th C was excluded from the parochial restrictions of local boroughs (Stepney?). Those living in the 'manor' had certain privileges and a 'liberty' to do as they please and i think was connected to the bishops of St Pauls so i doubt those liberties were used to good effect. Wonder why Madness chose that title as the otherside of Artillery passage home to dodgy Indian resturants grocers and house of ill repute there was a similar area called the South Artillery Grounds with the same liberty afforded it. Nineteen Canteen Posted 2 December, 2009 Share Posted 2 December, 2009 Ah, but unfortunately, I'm not a teenage girl. So my music taste differs quite a bit. I apprecaite that and it wasn't the point I was making. A lot of the choices being put forward are hardly mainstream and Wilco and Mr Rascal from your lists suggests you can juxtapose two very different types of music and your opinion will be respected. I think it's interesting that the willingness to accept an opinion as an opinion and there is no right or wrong regardless of the mainstream view is very evident in the off-topic forums but move that expectation into the main forum and the serial abusers and 'mainstream' holders of the alleged collective view will do their best to oppress you. Just an observation.

Can't say if he was on GMTV as we asked Sony to put that inane dross on ignore for us on our TV. It was bad enough when Fiona 'I need more than face cream' Phillips and her I love Frank Lampard act, was on the sofa but nowadays it's even worse and even Ms Kelly's crack in her top bottom is heading forever south to meet that of her front one. keithd Posted 2 December, 2009 Share Posted 2 December, 2009 really struggling to list 10 albums i've stolen, sorry, completely legally downloaded this year that are worthy. kasabian - west ryder lunatic asylum sticks out like a sore thumb. very good. Arctic Monkeys - Humbug, was ok. bit too much of a lateral move for me. Editors - In this Light and on this Evening. too synthy. another band chasing the 80's "revival" band wagon. i know there's a lot of music snobs on here that dont like them cos they sound too much like their beloved Joy Division, but i liked their first two albums a lot. and since seeing Reverend and the Makers support Kasabian, downloaded their EP A French Kiss in the Chaos. Very good that too. The Temper Trap - Conditions, good debut album And one from last year i only downloaded this year, A Silent Film - The City That Sleeps. 8/10 and a very good debut. Do you ever listen to Mozart he was considered quite progressive and here we are over 200 years later still enjoying his music? It doesn't have to be obscure to be classed as brilliant just obscured by clouds. Check out that Shirley Bassey track and btw John Peel is the only person i know who truly identified with young and up and coming bands into his fifties. Most people love the muisc they grew up with the most for all sorts of emotive reasons that calm and become less eager with the passage of time. I think you'll find many people bought that Long Player when it was released so perhaps hardly surprising a myriad of posters are still enjoying it's tunefulness and acerbic lyrics. Lyrics helped by the fact that you can actually understand them whilst listening to the album without making reference to some scrawled words in no order whatsoever but trendy inlay card that if you study it for 6 months you may start to get 'the message'. Too late by then as the 'band/artiste' will be back working in Top Shop saying 'I used to be in band'. Obscure usually leads to obscurity and how many of these suggestions for 2009 actually made the top 40 Long Player chart? So come on Rory stop pedalling what the sales reps try and get you to flog and that keep's you on message with the latest happenings and tell us really how much you a enjoy a bit of Subo when the bosses tell you to play the popular but so not left field offerings. Nineteen Canteen Posted 3 December, 2009 Share Posted 3 December, 2009 Yadda yadda yadda. God you're dull. This is a thread about the albums that people feel are the best released in 2009. If you have no interest in music released in 2009 i suggest you look elsewhere. Shirley Bassey's new album is supposed to be very good as I have previously mentioned with the Apartment written especially for her by renowned and well known Rufus Wainwright III. No doubt if my favourite music of 2009 was Toad the Wet Sprocket or Ned's Atomic Dustbin I would be Mr Uber Cool and my selections accepted without comment for fear of looking 'out of touch' with the latest grooves. SuBo's - I have a Dream, still brings a tear to the eye and how many people can be that wrong? Seems to me Scu that this thread is not about the best albums of 2009 but with a few exceptions, the most obscure. As Deppo suggested there is more material in this thread to keep Psueds Corner in print until we come to crown the 2010 top 10. It reminds me of the sketchs The Fast Show use to do about TOGWT and the guy talking about Jazz or they may have been the same thing but still if you know the sketches you will get the point. Anyway my top 10 albums for 2009 are as follows: The Fame Monster - Lady 'have I or haven't I ' Gaga I Dreamed a Dream - Subo 'of weird applauding fame' Taylor Swift Holiday Collection - by the luckily named Taylor Swift Where We Are - West 'hopefully not far' Life Rated R - Rhianna 'Rated R but no scat, allegedly doesn't like the brown stuff' The Twilight Saga. New Moon Original soundtrack - Various Artists 'A very prolific band with a huge discography' Reality Killed the Video Star - Jesus Christ The Alesha Show - Alesha Dixon 'Dixanywhere, I just enjoy watching come dancing.' Echo - Leona 'Red Rum' Lewis JLS - JLS 'supported by Nokia ringtones' Scu, I HTH.

The end of year polls are a great way for people to check out weird and wonderful stuff which wasn't featured on X-factor, or used on an advert, or given a massive marketing campaign. 19C, when people list things you've not heard of, its not a slight against you. Nineteen Canteen Posted 3 December, 2009 Share Posted 3 December, 2009 I have always appreciated your posts on the main board.I fully support your contrarian attitude but I am not sure why you are trying to disrupt this thread. Just suspicious that this is not about posting your favourite albums but more about your knowledge of music being better than anyone else's. Of the 1000 or so regular posters on this forum there is not one person who thinks for example the Black Eyed Peas or Lady GaGa or Robbie Williams or JLS are not their fav albums. The reason people don't post what they really enjoyed listening to is fear of attack from the Weird Pseud's - my favourite band of the TSWF. I bought very few albums released this year as it happens. According to iTunes, the only ones which have an official release year of 2009 are: Wildhearts - Chutzpah! Sorry and the Sinatras - Highball Roller Black Spiders - Cinco Hombres (Diez Cojones) Green Day - 21st Century Breakdown So those 4 are my top 10.
