Club Captain is fairly meaningless and looks like sop to Kelvin to try to avoid demotivating him. An outfield captain is tacticly better as one player then has authority to sort out issues on the pitch and try to get players to carry out instructions from the coaches which is impossible to do from the goal area. Hammond looks like the right choice and the decision is no reflection on Kelvin but it may mean that Hammond has slightly less authority on the field with a 'rival' captain at training and off the pitch. On balance, maybe Pardew should have taken the harder decision.

Not according to AP at the recent forum. KD does an awful lot in his role as club captain off the pitch.

Pardew stated that Kelvin will always be club captain whilst he is at the club , as in his opinion Kelvin is the best club captain he has worked with.

What does the club captain do then?

Club captain is nothing new though,I recall the likes of Nick Holmes and Francis Benali holding the role in the past, neither of whom I would rate as an on field motivator.

I agree with you that an outfield captain is the better option.Of those available Hammond is the only logical option.

My understanding is that it is more of an ambassador type role suited to a player with some recognition or standing bothin the dressing room and locally.Lawrie once explained part of the role to include arranging and coordinating off-field charitable activities such as visits to childrens hospital wards etc between players.

No, it's not meaningless at all. In the Benali and Dodd days, Dodd was team captain and Benali was club captain - it was his job to meet and great new players and so on.

Good move IMO. Hammond is an experienced captain and will be great to have a captain moving around the pitch. I always thought KD being captain caused him to come off his line a little too far, a little too often.

Great that he can remain club captain though and can still remain influential in that role. I think he's been a great captain and he still has a lot to offer in that way.
