Jesus Reigned Posted 25 November, 2009 Share Posted 25 November, 2009 I'm planning to go for a chinese with the missus and some friends on Saturday night. Anyone recommend anywhere in the city centre that does a decent buffet/all you can eat type thing? We've been to Dragon Palace a few times in the past but I've heard it's gone a bit downhill recently. Pilgrim House came to mind but it's fully booked. I thank you. Jesus Reigned Posted 25 November, 2009 Author Share Posted 25 November, 2009 Pilgrim House on the friday Friday's out as I'm out for an Indian; on a bit of a healthy eating drive at the moment as you can tell...
benjii Posted 25 November, 2009 Share Posted 25 November, 2009 I was going to say Pilgrim House too. As far as I'm aware the gig there is that you par a set price and order as much as you want (as opposed to a buffet) on any day? No? It's good food there too. Reccommended. hamster Posted 25 November, 2009 Share Posted 25 November, 2009 If you don't mind NOT being in the city centre, then I feel that not many can touch (Pilgrim House excepted) Little Budha in Shirley Excerpt rom Touch Southampton: "We visit the Little Buddha on a regular basis and have always been thoroughly impressed. The food is absolutely delicious, the staff are friendly, helpful and the service is very timely. The menu is vast and although there are conditions stated on the menu regarding how much you can order at once, I have never known them to enforce them (we usually order 8-9 starters for the two of us). It is very good value and the best Chinese I have visited in Southampton (which is quite a few!) We're visiting this evening and can't wait! As Fred Pontin would say "Book Early" ;-)

Jesus Reigned Posted 26 November, 2009 Author Share Posted 26 November, 2009 Thanks for the advice so far; I might give Little Budha a call to see if they've got a spare table. I agree that Panda in Bedford Place is very good; been there for lunch loads of times but not sure if they do an evening all-you-can-eat thing? Not that we're greedy buggers of course; it's just nice to try a few different dishes rather than sticking to one or two things from the menu! I've also found Panda in Beford Place to be good although haven't been there for a while. Why don't you order several different dishes between you, stick them in the middle of the table and share them out? No need for "my dish" and "your dish" then, unless your friends can't be trusted not to take the ****.

sotonjoe Posted 26 November, 2009 Share Posted 26 November, 2009 I always though the LB in Shirley was Kachina's poorer cousin, and FWIW it's worth I always thought Kachina served plastic food at extortionate prices, e.g. £24.95 per head.
hamster Posted 26 November, 2009 Share Posted 26 November, 2009 (edited) I've also found Panda in Beford Place to be good although haven't been there for a while. Why don't you order several different dishes between you, stick them in the middle of the table and share them out? No need for "my dish" and "your dish" then, unless your friends can't be trusted not to take the ****. That's exactly how Little Budha work their buffet Sev. You get to order 1 starter each which get placed in the middle for sharing. If you finish one just ask for another of the same or another off the menu. As long as you more or less clear the dish yuo can order more. same for 'mains' adding your rices and sides etc, Their crsipy seaweed is to die for too; crispy (not all are) savoury and sweet all at the same time. Pancake rolls mmmmmm.. Shredded Duck with Hoi Sin sauce mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm........... Although Kachina gets an extra point for the decor, it loses on quality of food inho and definitley does not warrant the extra cost. One thing all Chinese restaurants could do better on is to get some decent bottled ales in. It should be the law, but if you do venture into Shirley and fabcya decent pint go to Wetherspoons first, they have a couple of beauties just now due to over ordering for thewir recent beer festival all at £1.69 iirc. I recomend the 'Hole In The Wall' for a nice hoppy burnt choclatey taste with nice warm yeasty aftertaste. Junction 9 Posted 26 November, 2009 Share Posted 26 November, 2009 Always found Charlie Chans in Oxford Street to be OK +1 I went there Saturday night for the buffet menu. Jesus Reigned Posted 29 November, 2009 Author Share Posted 29 November, 2009 Thanks for everyone's comments. I ended up sticking with my booking at what I thought was Dragon Palace, to find it's changed ownership and is now called Golden Palace. It's the one above Nationwide in the High Street. We weren't disappointed; £15.90 for the buffet and the food was excellent, better than Dragon Palace used to be. Plus I think they must have missed a round of drinks from the bill, as 4 of us had 3 drinks each and the total bill came to £82 before tip!! Would highly recommend it.
