Johnny Shearer Posted 26 December, 2009 Author Share Posted 26 December, 2009 Really? Just seemed to me that it wasn't the usaul self with constant chants and songs throughout the match. Have to admit that the Exeter fans seemed to get behind their team. And the fact that their kit is near enough the same as ours I was doing double takes at the fans sitting in their block! CLOTH EARS Posted 26 December, 2009 Share Posted 26 December, 2009 There was moments when it was quiet, but the Northam were not that bad. It was quite easy to tell apart the regulars from those that haven't been for a while, when on a couple of occasions the Northam tried to start the slower version of OWTSGMI it was always hijacked by those who sing it at 100mph. The 'non regulars' obviously didn't realise that there is now a decent slower version.

rocknrollman no2 Posted 26 December, 2009 Share Posted 26 December, 2009 There were a lot of new faces in the Northam today who seemed happy to just stand there and watch the team. I tried to start a few songs, but a lot of people either didnt know the words,or couldnt be bothered. Ah well.I guess normal service will be resumed for our next home game. SamKimish Posted 26 December, 2009 Share Posted 26 December, 2009 True, it was a lot quieter for some periods of the game today but I did love hearing the old "Pompey/nottarF kraP" hate songs in the second half.

Fergie Posted 27 December, 2009 Share Posted 27 December, 2009 I thought the northam were awful yesterday! I was sat in block 1 as near to the exeter faithful as you could get and they were 10 times louder than the northam! Poor effort!! Pretty sure we were louder in blocks 1,2,3 today. Really needed some vocal support from the northam support too cause exeter totally out sung us, even when they were 2-0 and 3-1 down!! Their fans nearly carried them to a 2-2 today, maybe more if that had happened!! Was embarrasing to be out sung by 2,000 odd supporters when there was 28,000 odd against them!! Poooooor effort saints fans, biggest attendence of the season so for and possibly the quietest game I've been too, minus to exeter fans. Full credit to exeter for singing up the whole game and keeping the great banter going. Glad a few of us in block one had a good laugh with them. Rant over!! Wes Tender Posted 27 December, 2009 Share Posted 27 December, 2009 It was certainly the case that our masses were outsung by the Exeter fans. And them singing 2-0 and you still don't sing, you're supposed to be at home, you've only got one sons, etc, was an embarassment. OK, great to have a full house, but when block 43 is opened, plus the Itchen corner, they are filled with Johnny come latelies and pikeys who are either disinclined to sing, or do not know the chants. It is almost better not to have block 43 filled from the the point of view of reaction between the two sets of fans, because the block 42 lot react much better when they can see the rival fans. It livened up a bit when they scored their goal and thank God, as otherwise their fans could well have cheered them on to an equaliser. I hope that when crowds continue to grow naturally as we progress up the league, the extra fans get to settle into the matchday experience and make a more positive contribution. For those older fans the best OWTSGMI was at the Dell in the 1970's and early 80's when the upper tears of the West and East stands used to stamp their feet on the wooden floors to it and it used to echo around the ground, it used to make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up, it was awesome. A Man City fan once said to me after a game at the Dell that it was the most amazing sound he'd ever heard in a football ground.

RonManager Posted 27 December, 2009 Share Posted 27 December, 2009 I'm AMAZED people were suprised by the lack of atmosphere yesterday. Bumper crowd of the season maybe, but the 10k extra would have been people who don't normally go and so it was never going to be a riot was it!? Exactly. There were all sorts of disparate groups around me in Block 37 (including me), trying to start songs and it all got out of sync and confused, only the occasional one taking off. I've never seen half the people who were around me and judging by some of the conversations, they'd never been to SMS before. There were kids, bewildered looking grandmothers and grandads, long lost cousins from Freedonia and yoof young and old all shoehorned in together. Hopefully, the ground will continue to fill in a more organic and cohesive way over the rest of the season, with returning fans choosing where they want to sit, based on whether or not they want to sing. COYR I've said this before but the Kingsland/Norham corner requires more singers. I moved over at the MK Dons game and it is growing gradually, knitting itself to the Northam and will, when fuller, significantly increase the noise levels. We always sang it at a slow tempo. If you can find it on You Tube, take a look at the Saints v Palace semi-final in 76 when Barry Davies (Commentator) mentioned how impressive the song was. This was said as the camera panned across the whole of the Shed End at Chelsea with every Hampshire voice belting out a spine-tingling rendition.... slowly!! In fairness its good to have one stand lead the way in temrs of songs, chants etc in my opinion - so the rest of the ground follows suit. In all, good to see a full crowd hopefully leading to more people coming back for future games and getting more involved - if they want to of course. RedAndWhite91 Posted 27 December, 2009 Share Posted 27 December, 2009 Northam was quiet compared to usual, yeah. I've been impressed by the Itchen North in recent times too, but yesterday that was quiet too... In the Northam, in between the almost sporadic singing, which often fizzled out after one round or got sped up too much, there was just shouts of "PORK" and abuse aimed towards plastics. "Rickie Lambert hates plastics" or something like that. Now I have no problem with these so-called plastics swelling the crowd, but seriously, we need Northam/Itchen North to be loud and boisterous, not silent. Also, another point, I had one bloke near me who I don't think I've seen before, who thought it was Davis in goal, and thought Perry was Wotton. He sounded a right plank. ALSO, why sing "He's always offside" just as Waigo comes on, that's really good for him innit. Don't think he was offiside when he slotted away his chance for our third. dune Posted 27 December, 2009 Share Posted 27 December, 2009 there was a bit of season ticket waving in the itchen too I'm disgusted with the behaviour of certain pr1cks at the game yesterday. I made 400 mile round trip to this game and that's the welcome you get from these super dooper supporters. I made the mistake of sitting in block 42 (should've gone for block 41 which never used to be full of ****s) and witnessed clowns clad head to toe in club merchandise passing comments to the effect of the atmosphere being w4nk because of plastic fans. When you get some jumped up kids waving their arms about trying to marshall you into singing or to hurl insults at the away fans i don't know about anyone else but this inclined me not to sing and to watch the game instead. I'll be *****ed if i'm going to be dictated to by a bunch of teens who're barely out of their nappies. Football is bloody expensive and if some fans have chosen to stop going because the day out isn't as good as it was in our premiership days then that's their choice, and if they choose to go to the odd game then that's their choice also. They should be treated with respect because the chances are these fans have all done their fair share in following the club at some point in their lives and situations do change when you've got a family to feed or simply because you don't want to spend sh1t loads on footie every week. It's alright for these teens to gob off, but they haven't the slightest clue about the real world. I'm no super fan and i've never claimed to be one, but i've done more than my fair share of supporting the club over the years and this season i've done 2 homes and Colchester will be my 9th away. I won't be sitting in block 42 again - the minority of gobby cvnts that have claimed this block can have it. I reckon i'll sit in in the Northam/Kingsland corner in the future as it looked quite good yesterday and i'd imagine it wouldn't appeal so much to the tw4ts.
