Late Goals

That's 3 unless I can't count, and i'm fairly certain that plenty of other teams in this league have conceded/will concede around the same amount of late goals.

I said the same last year...I knew it was OK for is to concede late then..

I also did in the prem..it was alright back then..not as if you could cherry pick a last second goal that could have saved us...

TBF I've been writing about this as our major drawback from being in a play-off position for ages and just get flack....look up the inordinate percentage of (late) second half goals that we concede, that then frequently cost us clean sheets/points/games.

Oh Christ, not one of these threads.

Please, if you have nothing sensible to add then leave the thread alone.

I have often wondered about this phenomena, especially after our American based Saints fan, Tijuana Tim, brought it up so many times. I wish I knew why we conceded so many goals at the late stage of the game. Maybe we don't concentrate properly? I think AP should use some of MLs money to go and buy some players that can concentrate. They don't need to be really good players because AP should just bring them on for the last 15 minutes where they would concentrate hard and stop the goals. They could be big lumps of players, designed to concetrate and get in the way of shots and whatnot. Come AP, sort it out! COYR!!

Better email pardew. He is concerned about our late goals being let in

As I said - you should always strive for perfection. But I don't think it is down to something that our players specifically are doing wrong.

When we scored a late goal against Norwich, we didn't say "thank f*ck they don't concentrate in the last minutes", we all said "thank f*ck we kept going right to the end".

Brentford kept going right to the end.

I think a lot of this has been down to, (this year A LOT), our status as a club who is too big for this league. As has been said by many people on many threads this year; coming to St Mary's is most teams 'cup final'.

Therefore, many teams start of the match as not wanting to be humiliated, but to come away with a marginal loss. Therefore, with ten or so minutes to go, being one behind or on even terms, they will go for it like their lifes depend on it. Just like when you see an underdog performing in a cup game.

Therefore, with this pressure on most of our matches in this league, we are always going to be under so much pressure at the end of games with teams desperate to 'be the hero' against a 'bigger club'.

Simples

Well, that argument might make sense, but late, late goals we've conceded this season (Millwall, Stockport etc) have been away from home.

The reason for this problem lies simply with the midfield. They let the opposition rule the roost for long periods by sitting too deep and eventually the team cracks under the pressure. I have seen this happen time after time after time and its still not been addressed. Why? Because the central midfield pairing has never been addressed by appointing two top midfield generals - one a playmaker, the other a holding play-breaker. A pairing something along the lines of Safri and Quashie perhaps would dominate midfield AND put in a decent shift defensively. Our midfielders are currently too niave (Morgan), too unskilled in terms of holding and playing the ball to feet (Wotton) and too scarred to take responsibility (all) - so they sit back and allow the opposition to dictate the play.

A decent midfield would be....

Antonio ?New Signing (Playmaker) Hammond Holmes

with up front....

Lambo/Lallana/Connolly/Herbie
