Saint Mikey Posted 31 May, 2011 Share Posted 31 May, 2011 Does anyone remember some joker who reckoned he could become a Pro-Footballer in a Year, given a particular training and diet regime? It was on the Local News and they even had some footage of him and interviewed Matty about it. He was mid-20's and pony, Matt was very gracious when asked about his chances, which were clearly nil. Anyone know what happened to him? From memory, it must have been about 5 years ago.
JackFrost Posted 31 May, 2011 Share Posted 31 May, 2011 His name wasn't "Anthony Pulis" by any chance was it?
Colinjb Posted 31 May, 2011 Share Posted 31 May, 2011 "The Beautiful Aim." Very interesting project, read an update on his website, apparently he improved considerably. He ended up in a trial with someone (league 2 side I think) who felt he wasn't league standard but should be playing at Southern League/Isthmian level. Considering he was a total novice that's bloody impressive!!

Yeah it was some chap who looked like the old Dr Who (David Tennant), I think he played in the foundation match the other week. He didn't score. His blog hasn't been updated in a while, but I do believe he had a couple of unspectacular trials at Luton Town. They weren't too impressed! Hatch Posted 31 May, 2011 Share Posted 31 May, 2011 I just read a book about someone who tried something similar with Darts. Julian something or other I think. He gave up his job and everything, just to play darts non stop. Practice practice practice... He got no-where.
Crab Lungs Posted 31 May, 2011 Share Posted 31 May, 2011 I think it's fair to say I've probably played with quite a few players who had the necessary technical ability to have made a career from the game. However, it's the application/timing/attitude of player which eventually counted against them. I do think there are extreme cases though where people slip through the proverbial net because they possess other qualities (fitness, dedication, strength) that see them through, despite having a middling ability level. I'm pretty sure Pulis doesn't possess any of them though, either!
Huffton Posted 31 May, 2011 Share Posted 31 May, 2011 Was talking to an FA coach about this sort of thing the other day. He reckons that clubs nowadays don'y neccesarily look for out and out footballing talent. That can be taught, what they want is kids who are strong and fast naturally. Huffton Posted 31 May, 2011 Share Posted 31 May, 2011 I like to think I'd be better than Anthony Pulis anyway. I know people are taking the **** a bit, and he is very poor as far as a pro footballer goes, but I reckon he would thoroughly embarrass many posters on here who are happy to belittle him, lets face it he has done something no-one on here has managed (to my knowledge), and thats to get paid for playing the game. I thought it was a good read. Pretty funny and any book that mentions Southampton a few times is fine by me. I especially enjoyed his theory that the more you drink - the better you get! If you ain't read it then I'd say it is definitely worth checking out....

Colinjb Posted 31 May, 2011 Share Posted 31 May, 2011 And they wonder why our national side is so pants... It's what we did with Kenwyne Jones. Sadly, look at the other end of the spectrum and you get Arsenal.

There are at least two posters on here that were paid to play on Saturdays.
