westofshannonsaint Posted 15 June, 2011 Share Posted 15 June, 2011 Just seen Laurie McMenamy on SSN from Ascot. Here's what he said.... Reporter -Laurie McMenamy former Southampton, nice to see you, you must be feeling very buoyant Southampton getting close to being back in the big time. Laurie McMenamy - Absolutely delighted and I'm seeing a real legend today, Michael Channon, who I believe has horses. R - He trains one or two, he's not bad apparently. LM - well he tells me he's pretty good, if he's as good at horses as he was at football, I'll back him all the way. R - What's the feeling like down at Saint Mary's at the minute? LM - Well I'm on the outside looking in, really. It's a whole new ball game, we've got foreign ownership, saved the club financially, terrific. But I go along with Matthew Le Tissier & people like that, and I buy my ticket and we watch with fingers crossed that we go up, and we did. I think Next year is harder, I've managed in all four divisions and that one has always been the hardest to get out of. R - Nigel Adkins, one or two people say "could you do what Paul Lambert and Norwich did. Bounce and then Bounce again to the premier league" Can you see that for Southampton? LM - I think the owner might see that, and as a manager I thinks that the problem. Norwich, fantastic, but for clubs like Southampton not a good thing necessarily. Because unless you improve your team, I think it will be difficult. I don't think Southampton will have a problem living in the Championship because they never got relegated in the first place on football matters it was actually administration, so I think there good enough to be there. But without any additions, and there hasn't been so far, any big signings, they might find it difficult to get promoted. But there a good club, the average gate last season was 23,000 in the third division. Last crowd of the season, 32,000. Not many other clubs could do that. R - I've got to ask you, the talk about English talent these days and the emergence of it, but the expense of English talent, what do you make of some of these prices that are being paid for these young English players? LM - Compared to our day, you couldn't dream of it. But on the other hand people like yourselves are helping out that way because your bringing the money in, it's going out on television. At one time, I used to knock on the door of the television business and go "can we be on television this year" in Scandinavia, that's what they did in the winter, and you got a couple of hundred pound. Now you can go anywhere in the world, India, China, America & you'll see 3,4,5 premiership games every weekend live, so their paying for that, so why shouldn't the people who work in the game get the money. Short Life, Devils Advocate, if you go to a show in London, it costs a lot of money, if you go to Take That it costs a fortune. I think it could be stretched around a bit better, It could dwindle down the four divisions a bit more than it does at the minute. R - Your an assured judge of football, do you know anything about Ascot and can you put us onto a winner today? LM - when the players I had players i had, Alan Ball, Peter Osgood, Bless 'em both, Keegan, Shilton, Channon etc. etc. They once took me to the races and I backed more winners than the all of them put together which they didn't like. And I told them my system eventually, and i'll tell you quietly... R - Go on? LM - eeny, meeny, miney, mo... R - Ill stick with that. LM - ...and then you go up and down and back that one and the next one. R - Laurie, it's been a pleasure, we wish Southampton all the best. R - There you are, true legend of football Laurie Mcmenamy. he's got his fingers crossed, but very realistic about Southampton's chances back in the championship next season. I thought we were relegated from the CCC on the field, that's why the points deduction carried over to the next season... Am I wrong?
Colinjb Posted 15 June, 2011 Share Posted 15 June, 2011 I thought we were relegated from the CCC on the field, that's why the points deduction carried over to the next season... Am I wrong? Correct. We went down second from bottom on 45 points. We were about 6 adrift of safety. As the only effoct of a points deduction would have been to put us last in the table the penalty carried over. You are right and wrong IMO, we were relegated on the pitch, but with the grim reaper of administration larger than life round the corner did not help because Lowe and the other monkeys in charge at the time did not have the clout to invest in the club. I think this is what Lawrie's getting at, whilst we were yet to suffer the points deduction all the other signs were pointing to 'doomed'.
Crazy Diamond Posted 15 June, 2011 Share Posted 15 June, 2011 Interesting stuff, cheers for the write up. I'm starting to wonder with regards to transfers. It doesn't particularly bother me we've not signed anyone yet as I think we've a decent squad, but having said that, is it still early days for signings or is the market fully underway now? I can't really tell if I'm honest. Have Championship clubs even done much business? The only transfer that sticks out to me is Chopra going to Ipswich, though if Nolan does sign for West Ham that'll be a big one. Perhaps even the biggest we can expect. I'll start getting concerned if we haven't signed any new players by the time pre-season training starts. It's always nice to have new players signed by now (such as West Ham with Nolan) but it doesn't actually achieve anything. Plenty of players like to go on holiday and allow their agents to get to work and identify the best offer for them. There's also the possibility that, rather than just signing any old player, the club are undergoing an extensive scouting/recruitment process to get in the best possible players we can get. That said, I think we need at least 5 or 6 new players to allow us to compete at the higher end of teh table. The transfer window is open until September, but realistically we need to be looking at getting all of those (or at least all bar 1 or 2) in well before the start of the season. Raging Bull Posted 15 June, 2011 Share Posted 15 June, 2011 As far as I was aware the club will buy the right players not just the first half decent player to like what he see's at SMS. Unfortunatly the type of players we are probably now looking at are quite expensive, therefore have to be the right choice. A lot of the transfers that have happened so for (I think) have mainly been frees. Also when a bigger club sells a player for a lot of cash the market nearly always picks up, that hasn't happened (yet).
skintsaint Posted 15 June, 2011 Share Posted 15 June, 2011 (edited) We only got the deduction the following season because we wouldnt have stayed up anyway. Im sure thats how it was. When we were first penalised the -10 was taken straight off us - great for morale. Edited 15 June, 2011 by skintsaint im a titmunch

He got that one wrong. We was chite all season and only had the -10 the start of the next season.
Saint Samuel Posted 15 June, 2011 Share Posted 15 June, 2011 We looked like going down all season, think it was the defeat to Sheffield Wednesday a few days before we got the points deduction that confirmed it for me. I'm sure a few on here will agree with me that we were destined for relegation the moment Lowe got rid of Pearson in favour for the cheaper and less equiped Poortvliet and Wotte. Greenridge Posted 15 June, 2011 Share Posted 15 June, 2011 The opening few comments from Lawrie seem fairly typical of his veiled digs at the current regime, he still struggles to surpress his feelings.

Which makes Poortvliet's comments after winning at a **** poor Derby County of 'we want a play-off spot' all the funnier. Well, in hindsight it is I suppose. Dalek2003 Posted 15 June, 2011 Share Posted 15 June, 2011 I am very concernd about our lack of activity in the transfer market. I hope it is the plan and not because we cant' or won't. Without strengthening the squad I can only see a grim season ahead.

Do you want players who've been dumped, or contracts not renewed or players valued by their current club, if the latter, then the 1st July is the time to start negotiating with their club. hughieslastminutegoal Posted 16 June, 2011 Share Posted 16 June, 2011 The opening few comments from Lawrie seem fairly typical of his veiled digs at the current regime, he still struggles to surpress his feelings. He was asked and he said no more than what most managers feel - owner/chairman expectations can be tough for managers. And he calls the financial security that has been brought by the new regime as terrific. I think you're reading much more into what he said than is actually there. There should be no doubt that we'll add a few new faces and Nigel said we'd be adding quality so no reason not to believe him just yet.

I think you're reading much more into what he said than is actually there. to be fair, his opening statement was just kind of explaining that he's not involved in the club any more (or ITK). He's just a fan like the rest of us. He's probably a little bit disappointed with that & if I were him I probably would be to. Then there was a wry smile when he said Cortese probably thinks we'll go up straight away. Did'nt see the interveiw but if the reporter was Clare Balding, she and the rest of the Balding clan are Saints fan's. I don't know who the reporter was, but it was a bloke so not Clare Balding (I hope).
