McClaren saw the reputation he had built up at Middlesbrough take a significant blow during his time in charge of England, but he enjoyed success in Holland with FC Twente before a stint in Germany with Wolfsburg did not work out.

And he has now set his sights on guiding Forest back into the top-flight, with the club having missed out twice in the play-offs under Davies in the last two seasons.

On the right bus

"It's a great feeling, especially coming here. You can smell the history and tradition of this football club. I've been abroad for three years and I wanted to get back into English football."

Steve McClaren Quotes of the week

He said: "Everybody has to work together, on the same page, on the right bus going in the right direction. We will work together to improve this club.

Oi! Go and find your own means of transport. We are already on the bus and it is going our direction!

Steve McLaren says his appointment as the team conductor on the bus is just the ticket to build a platform to drive them on their journey to that shown on the destination board “the Premiership”. There will be stops along the way but no room for any passengers.

I think bus gags are just the ticket!

I like them - I think they're just the ticket and gives people a platform to express themselves. They certainly ring my bell. :)

I don't know. You wait years for a 'just the ticket' pun and then three turn up at once...

What may be more relevant is that the Forest board must have given Mclaren some assurances about funds for team strengthening. He hasn't gone to an NpC club to do anything other than rebuild his reputation in England. Saints have a good L1 squad, although they still lost 10 of their 46 L1 fixtures last season, and they now have to compete with clubs managed by the likes of Allardyce, Mclaren and Sven. Have a feeling our L1 squad won't be up to the task and its not just a case of making signings, what matters is who we sign.

Most football managers have highs and lows but Mclaren has shown he can be a winner taking MIddlesborough into Europe and winning the Dutch Championship with FC Twente. Forest already have their top 6 squad from last season and now the Daily Mail reports that the board have given Mclaren the 'green light' to start a 'spending spree'.

Is Nigel's bus still in the garage while several of the others are on the road, and with experienced drivers?

Wonder if he is going to take on a Nottingham accent. Loved his Dutch one, which seem to help him at Twente. Not sure when at Wolfsburg, whether he took to speaking English with a German accent, that might have been his problem.
