Borough Market, The Old Operating Theatre, a trip up the Monument and St Pauls Cathedral is well worth a visit, climb to the top is well worth it, all these a short walk from each other. Cabinet War rooms and a tour round the Houses of Parliament another good gig. Temple Church was also quite interesting

Agree with all the above (though haven't been to the old operating theatre), but if you are at Borough market, then a trip to the Clink Prison is worthwhile as well. Doesn't cost much, you can normally find a two for one deal, and it is interesting to see the old torture instruments and living conditions of a debtors prison. Perhaps this should be in the Pompey takeover thread for that reason.

Defo borough market - indeed, a walk from Waterloo to tower bridge along the south bank is worth doing on a nice day.

This site also looks good for uncovering some hidden gems... http://www.historic-uk.com/HistoryMagazine/DestinationsUK/SecretLondon/

This is a good one, done it a few times with the in laws etc. Can take the bus back from Tower Bridge as well, it is generally free if you get the old style conductor jobs and does a nice route past St Pauls through westminster and onto to Chelsea, where you can get off for a drink or some food. Good day out.

Alternatively Ham common on a Sunday can be interesting.

The things that are free are still among the best. As trousers suggests, the walk along the South Bank is wonderful, although I'd recommend doing it just as the sun goes down and the riverbanks light up.

A great view of London can be had from the top of Primrose Hill (Camden Town the nearest tube, Northern Line), and there are plenty of good cafes at the bottom of the hill, as well as Camden Market, which is a five minute walk away.

I like riverside pubs - my local is the Crabtree (not far from Craven Cottage, Hammersmith tube), which has great food and reasonable prices. (Or if you really want to take out a mortgage for one great meal with the stars, try the River Cafe just two minutes further up the Thames Path towards Hammersmith.)

And remember that the V&A, the Science Museum, the Natural History Museum (all at South Kensington tube, District and Piccadilly Lines) and the British Museum, among others, are all free entry.

Kew Gardens isn't free but is great value - the sheer variety of exotic plant life in that place is extraordinary. (Kew Gardens on the District Line to Wimbledon).

The restaurant in St Thomas's hospital just over the bridge from houses of parliament is very good value! (for London) the cabinet war rooms are good. We did a jack the ripper tour which was good too.

This is a good website http://www.timeout.com/london/things-to-do/free-london
