Not sure what to make of this ...

"When I got my left hip replaced it should have cost $60,000, but the way it works here, I only ended up paying $800. And I'm getting my other hip done next month," says Davies, who qualifies for state help in both the US and the UK because of dual citizenship.

No mention of the £10K collected by the GiveItToRon appeal. Maybe that was spent on a new set of teeth.

Ron has not been given the £10,000 which is why he hasn't mentioned it.

We are holding on to it until we are sure that he is fit and healthy again. We have been paying his out of pocket expenses and we helped towards his teeth (which needed to be done before they would look at his hips). The 2nd op is due on Feb 5th. If there are no complications and it becomes obvious that the rest of the money is not needed then the GITR committee will consider what best to do with it. We have already had some debate (pay off his debt on his trailer, bring him to the UK etc etc) but we have now decided to wait until after the 2nd op.

It was only after the money was raised that Tim Mumford (TT) got involved and managed to get the US system to meet most of the costs we had been expecting to incur.

Hope the same fan who sent money to Ron to get his teeth fixed, gets someone to "fix" Ruperts teeth!!!!!

Good article.

Dear oh dear, what has this got to do with Rupert? I was looking forward to a decent thread about Ron and two comments in Rupes gets a mention. What is wrong with everyone?

I love the thought of George Best passing on the cup final result, a shame he isn't still around to be the recipient of Ron's call to find out the result this time.

A good article about a great Saint.

Heh, you get the feeling Ron isn't a great one for technology!

Brings a tear to one's eye especially when you know that some of the big mouths with big money could have had the man at St Mary's today to watch the game in front of 30,000 adoring fans. Well done to all those who responded to the GiveittoRon campaign and a big thank you to Duncan for posting this gem.

It's things like the Give It To Ron appeal that show how much this Club means to people, the city and a wider community. Whatever happens over the next few years, we all need to make sure that that spirit, affection and pride is not lost.

It's great to see fans rally round like this and remember past legends and I having wathched the Thriila in manilla last night, I can't help but compare it to the destitute state that Joe Frazier now sees out his last days.

That's a good bit to know and something that should be shouted loud and clear, especially to those who berate Tim for 'blowing his own trumpet' about being over there!

I chat to Tim, not regularly, but that is typical of the man and something he never mentioned to me.

Spot on fella.

I keep in touch with Tim as well and he never once mentioned arranging or helping to sort this out (then again it probably shouldn't come as a surprise because as I have said before Tim's warmth towards all things Saints knows no bounds).

The problem is that there are too many wkkaners on here who are so quick to deride others.

Nice article - interesting that Ron comes across as so unaware of the deep affection for him among Saints fans (or rather, was before the GiveittoRon appeal) or his legendary status as part of our history.

Well done Tim and others responsible for the GiveittoRon appeal.

FF and TT. I think what you and others have done for Ron is fantastic. For what its worth, as somebody who donated in a modest way to the appeal, I think Ron should just be given the money as a thank you for all the pleasure he gave us fans. I'm not sure its riht for the GITR committee to decide how the money should be used - that should be a matter just for Ron and his wife. The more it can be made to look like a grateful gift from fans and the less like a charity case dole out the better IMO.

The fact remains that the money was raised on the basis that Ron could not afford the bilateral hip operation which was also the impression given by Ron's video of thanks. This does not now appear to be the case as the newspaper article states quite clearly that Ron moved to Albuquerque because the operation there would only cost him $800 per hip! I have no problem with the £10K raised by the GITR appeal being used as the committee sees fit but I cannot deny having a slight sense of unease about the whole business.

Please don't be uneasy about what will happen to the donations. The Give It To Ron appeal regularly meets to update on the next step in the plan to improve Ron Davies life.

When it emerged, several months back, that a close tie to TT could arrange to have Ron's hip operations done for much less expense that all the researched information suggested, what were we to do..? Turn the offer down..? This means that a significant portion of the initial donations are intact. And ideally that's fantastic..! When Ron has his second operation, and is in a period of rehabilitation, then we will know, with a much clearer perspective, what the best thing is to do with the rest of the money. An announcement will be made then.

Thanks

The Give It To Ron Appeal.

Happy New Year Gordon

Well here is the skinny from the horse's mouth. Ron has lived in New Mexico for a long time, nothing-zero-ziltch to do with his hips or hip operation. He and Chris live there virtually penniless and with few if any resources. After his hips became too painful and demobilizing he had to quit work (already located in Albuquerque). Ops for both hips could possibly exceed 100 grand, of which Ron and Chris were obliged to pay for, that's when the folks at GITR got started. However after extensive investigation by Steph (my gf) and myself we found options where not only could Ron have 80-20 but maybe even 100% coverage.

Long after the wonderful GiveItToRon effort (which incidentally would most probably not cover the full cost) we assured that Ron would receive 80% 'Medicare' for the ops. Then we worked the subsequent 10-20% under another seldom used 'MedicAid' opportunity. Not only have we managed to reduce the cost but also through our connection/communications Ron has seen a far superior and well-reknowned orthopedic surgeon. He also had his first op significantly earlier as we put him with someone with no 'waiting-list'.

So far the outgoings have been some 400 odd bucks we've paid in prescriptions and odd bills, so I hope you are now not upset by Ron's ops any more. What's more I have total faith in the tremendous people at GiveItToRon that they will use the funds totally appropriately towards Ron's best welfare...also there is nothing for sure that Ron's second hip op or subsequent medical care will be as financially successful as his first, it is like 'let's wait and see'.

Thanks for explaining that Tim.

One of the other side effects of the GITR appeal was it reconnected Ron to the fans and vice versa. Plus it has also led to Ron gaining some employment and self esteem. It also painted Saints fans in a positive, good light - even this morning I got a message from Sky TV asking all about it and the National media interest has been remarkable. Even the club came out of it smelling of roses at the time and although we were then being governened by the discredited execs I have to say they were very helpful.

Tim

Thanks for making the situation as clear as possible. I feel that nobody who contributed should feel uneasy about things now. Let's hope that the efforts toward Ron's second operation are as fruitful as those for the first.

I wonder if Hagiology have considered a book, with Ron being the subject? I appreciate he wasn't always a Saint (ex Luton, Norwich) but I would have thought that a small paperback might be worth investigating?

Too many stories about Ron you couldn't publish Andy.

There's still a few blokes in So'ton on the lookout for him :)

TBF, this Lawie Donegan that wrote the article is a good bloke and quite a character too, he is now a Californian resident too http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lawrence_Donegan

Indeed a great writer - always enjoy his golf columns in The Grauniad. Also of course bassist in Lloyd Cole and the Commotions (although had no idea he also played with the Bluebells). Have posted a link to his articles below.

Well done on all of the great work with Ron - you and the chaps at GITR have done us proud.

Cheers.
