1970s Dell pre-match playlists?

Does such a thing exist? Has anyone kept a record of the stuff that used to come over the tannoy at the Dell? Was it just the whim of the dj or was it planned?

There must have been some planning so the discs could be got out beforehand, but was it written down?

I'd like to know if it's possible to re-create a pre-match atmosphere playlist so you could go back in time to the Milton....

My recollection was that the records played were generally what was in the charts at the time.  So watching a seventies edition of TOTP2 would give you an idea.  Not sure that there was ever that much thought that went into it.  

But I also remember that they played a big band version of O When the Saints go Marching In before and after each game.  Bringing that back would be great

Yep 👍🏻 remember the brass band before games and 80s Chart music and John burridge doing his crazy goalkeeper/acrobat warm up routines along the 18yard box

As mentioned, just a random current playlist, brass band for OWTS occasionally accompanied with a walk-around by the England self-appointed cheerleader Ken Bailey (who took the odd jibe from sections of the crowd...was he a wrong’un?  )

First thing that popped into my head tenuously related was 1978 promotion season, the match day sponsor if they had a give away would have a load of promotions girls (a bit like the Formula one, Marlboro girls and Grid Girls before it became seen to be politically incorrect) come out at half time and throw freebies into the crowd, bags of crisps and the like. 
One Saturday a record shop in town was the match sponsor, half time out came the girls and started throwing free 7” 45 singles into the crowd the only issue was no one had carried out a practice run and failed to tape the sleeve opening! First few were being tossed nicely to the front of the Milton Road end. Pleading hands were waving in the air further back, so the ladies started throwing them further, trouble was the records mid flight were departing the sleeves and the hopeful recipients were suddenly diving and cowering out of the way of 7” vinyl discs coming straight towards them at some speed. 

Little cartons of Unigate Milk a couple of years later in the Milk (League) Cup can wait for another day. 😉

There was a run of games where whenever he turned up with his cheery smile and wave to the crowd, we would bloody lose, you would see him either in the car park, or worst still down by the “tunnel” just before kick off and go “oh no that bloody Ken is here - won’t be winning this afternoon!”.

I loved watching Budgie's warm up routines. And he always liked to have a chat with those behind the goal, even during the match. One of the great memories of the Dell Days.

I remember them playing We are the champions by Queen in the late 70s, it seemed to be their default record at the time when they didn't have a record requested to be played for some ones birthday etc. 

I also remember that some records jumped as if a number of them were warped and the crowd cheered when it happened.

Of the Queen records that may of may not have been played  as the teams came out,  the one that worked best IMO was Hammer to Fall.

 

Back in the 70's, the pre- match  records were at times provided by or sponsored by shops in town. And the post match music in the early 70's was a Sousa march.

Can’t remember too many songs played over tinny before games in 70’s, but do remember the Albion brass band playing before games, not sure when they stopped appearing at The Dell

Funnily enough I’ve just had a bit of a flashback myself - mid-70s, Chelsea had all the Archers (about 5,000 and mostly all thugs back then), David Essex blaring out over the tannoy with ‘Hold Me Close’ and what seemed like most of them joining in with “...every cloud’s got a silver-lining...” - can’t remember the score tho!

🤣🤣🤣🤣. Patently no one had thought that through. One of the highlights of my Saints supporting 'career'.

😂.....not forgetting the Police Chief walking behind the goal while his accompanying Copper read the mood was full of the Devil, and wisely walked across the penalty box grinning, as the air filled with little milk cartons that had been opened. The bulk missed a direct hit but hit the net bounced back spraying milk everywhere, poor sods on the front rows of the Milton behind the goal, Police Chief took it in good humour as he was smiling despite a milk splattered raincoat. 
Never get away with such jolly japes these days with wall to wall CCTV 😆🤣😂
