Obviously, Forster was outstanding for Celtic, which is why he's kept a total of nearly 200 clean sheets but let's just compare like for like: Forster and McCarthy's stats for Premier League games only:

Forster played 115..... goals conceded 130.... clean sheets 40... ave per game 1.1 goals
McCarthy played 130..... goals conceded 202.... clean sheets 25 ...ave per game 1.6 goals

That means that with McCarthy in goal we concede 0.5 goals per game more than we do with Forster, which is 19 more per season. How many points has that cost us????

In terms of shot stopping and presence, it's a no brainer - Forster wins every time.

The problem we have is that we play a front foot/high line/pressing game, which requires the goal keepers to occasionally engage outside of their box and contribute to the play. Fraser is absolutely horrific at this side of the game and is a calamity waiting to happen. This is the one part of his game that McCarthy is better at and why I feel Ralph does lean towards him more, in my opinion.

Either way, we need a new GK.

Bad keepers don't concede only 33 PL goals in a season even with superb centre backs in front of them.

It felt like every time McCarthy played last season we leaked at least 3 goals a game.

Whereas the reality is that he conceded 3 or more in a game 10 times out of 31, which included a win (4-3 v Villa) and a draw (3-3 v Chelsea)

Having a good defence in front of him of course helped alot. But he also played his part in having only conceded 33 goals in 38 league games. You can't fluke your way to such a record, he still had work to do. Other teams in the league that season had better defenders than us.

So he conceded 3 or more in a third of the games he played. That's a piss poor record and should be enough for the manager to want to change things.

And instead he played McCarthy for the last refs games.

We do not have the money to buy keepers and outfield players. Best leave the keepers and make do, if we can get our full backs, striker and winger. With better players Foster and Macca will have less to do in any case.

Forster played 13......goals conceded 12......cleans sheets 6.......ave goals per game 0.9

McCarthy played 14.....goals conceded 38.....clean sheets 0.....ave goals per game 2.7

 

So, now that they have the same defence, the difference between them is even more marked. We are conceding 3 times as many goals when McCarthy plays.

You could go on forever

Clean sheets against Bournemouth, Shrewsbury, Sheff Utd and then the other games Arsenal, Wolves, Liverpool - 1 shot on target in each of those 3.

Has he had to contend with a team down to 10 that has given up and capitulated. 

Ultimately they are both not the best keepers but I for one shit myself less when McCarthy is in goal than I do when Forster is in goal flapping around and falling like a tree.
