Bailey Posted 27 January, 2009 Share Posted 27 January, 2009 Interested to hear what people believe to be the best possible team we can put out. Assume you are under no instructions from those above, have TOTAL control over team affairs and can play who you wish. What would be your Saints XI? For me, it would be the following . . . ------------------ Davis ----------------- James ----- Saiejs ----- Perry ----- Surman BWP ---- Schneiderlin ---- Euell ---- Holmes -------- Saganowski --- McGoldrick ------- I'd go with James at RB purely because there is nobody else! I think Saga and McGoldrick have the potential to form a decent partnership too. I would like to see Lallana play wide right but his lack of discipline in a positional sense lets him down at times. With Wotte saying teams need to be unpredictable with team tactics, we could also line up as follows . . . ------------------ Davis ------------------ James ----- Saiejs ----- Perry ----- Surman ------------------ Euell ------------------- BWP -------------------------------- Skacel ----------------- Lallana ------------------ ------- Saganowski --- McGoldrick --------- On paper, both these sides look pretty decent and you'd think they would be capable of holding their own in this division. benjii Posted 27 January, 2009 Share Posted 27 January, 2009 (edited) ---------------KD----------------- James---Perry----Saiejs-----Skacel Gillet---Shchneiderlin---Euell---Surman --------Saga------McG---------- I would also have given Thomson a proper run on the right wing as I thought he showed promise but haven't really seen enough of him to put him in my first XI at the mo. If Gillet and James isn't working, BWP or McClaggon are also options on the right as well as Thomson. Edited 27 January, 2009 by benjii

Bailey Posted 27 January, 2009 Author Share Posted 27 January, 2009 If Svensson was fit then there would be no question about it, he'd be in my side. However, realistically I can't see him returning, especially with his new role as 'assistant head coach'.
Andy_Porter Posted 27 January, 2009 Share Posted 27 January, 2009 Davis James Size Perry Skacel McLaggon Surman Euell Holmes McGoldrick Saganowski 4-4-2 with players in their proper positions. ottery st mary Posted 27 January, 2009 Share Posted 27 January, 2009 Yes not a bad team But why was Holmes substituted and where does Lallana fit in? Holmes injured hence McGlaggon who apparently has far more speed and eye for goal.

Bailey Posted 27 January, 2009 Author Share Posted 27 January, 2009 Interesting that hardly anyone (including me!) wants Lallana in their first 11. I don't not want him in the side, I happen to think he's a great player with bags of potential. However, I don't think he suits a 4-4-2 system as his lack of positional sense when playing out wide right lets him down. 'In the hole' is definitely his best position, but more often than not he drifts in and out of games and goes quiet for large spells. Maybe a 4-4-2 diamond would work with someone like Euell or Surman holding, with Lallana as the attacking midfielder?
AussieDog Posted 27 January, 2009 Share Posted 27 January, 2009 Intersting to see that everyone is hammering Wotte for not picking his "best side" when virtually everyone on here is picking a different one. For what it's worth, here's my (unhelpful) team selection :- 1.KD 2.A right fullback 3.A left fullback Molyneux? 5.someone who can win headers in the box Saiejs 6.someone with pace who can stay goalside 4.someone who can win the ball 8.someone who can pick a pass Schneiderlin 7.someone who can cross a ball from the left and chase back 11.someone who can cross a ball from the right and chase back 9.Someone strong who can win headers in the opposing penalty box and make flick-ons 10. A goal Poacher Saganowski As you can see, I have no f*cking idea, other than Kelvin in goal, and a few suggestions for a couple of the other positions! All I want is for us to pick 11 players who play their hearts out, and get back to the basics. If we don't have players who can do the job, and if we don't have any cash, then I guess we are screwed! I agree he has a lot of potential but he lets himself down with basic stuff IMO like, as you point out, his ability to "do a job" for the team. I'm sure he will come good but I think he should be used as a bench player for the moment. Right winger on the right. Left winger on the left. Two strikers. Solid centre mid. Easy! SuperMikey Posted 27 January, 2009 Share Posted 27 January, 2009 First XI (4-4-2) -----------Davis------------ James--Saeijs--Perry--Skacel ------Surman--Morgan------- Lallana----------------Holmes ---------BWP--Saga--------- Subs: Bart, Lancashire, McLaggon, Euell, DMG Ideally i'd play Lallana in the hole, but I think that Saga doesn't have the physical strength to be able to play up front on his own, so giving him some support in the form of BWP would help that. The full backs would overlap the wingers, providing an extra line of service for strikers, while Saeijs and Perry stay back, because they don't really have the pace to be able to charge up and down the pitch with every attack. Surman to move into almost an attacking midfielder position with Morgan staying further back in a holding position. Second XI (4-2-3-1) ------------Davis-------------- James--Saeijs--Perry--Molyneux ------Surman--Morgan--------- BWP-------Lallana-------Skacel ------------Saga-------------- Subs: Bart, Lancashire, McLaggon, DMG, Holmes With this formation we'd concentrate play through the middle of the pitch, using Lallana in a playmaker role, with Saga dropping back slightly to allow Lallana to attack alongside him. Surman and Morgan playing as holding midfielders, conservatively, with the full backs attacking but not moving too far up the pitch that it leaves us exposed at the back. I know that this is a tried, tested and rubbish formation, but I think we have players that suit a formation such as this. Could be quite a good formation to use in away games, using 4-4-2 at home. Bailey Posted 27 January, 2009 Author Share Posted 27 January, 2009 Interesting to see that everyone is hammering Wotte for not picking his "best side" when virtually everyone on here is picking a different one. I think that's largely down to the fact that we don't actually know our best side! All season we've chopped and changed the starting team, and there's been no consistency to our side. It can't help the players as they can't get any momentum going, and their confidence must suffer if one week they're playing, only to be out the squad all together the next! We need to get a strong spine to the side and stick to it, then we can build around it and blood youngsters. For example . . . ---------------- Davis --------------- ---------- Saiejs ----- Perry --------- ---------- Wotton --- Euell ---------- ----- Saganowski --- McGoldrick ----- This spine of the team is very solid. You've got the aerial ability of Saeijs, the experience of Perry and Wotton, the work-rate and bite of Euell in the middle and the proven goalscoring instincts of Saganowski. Oh and McGoldrick. With the above 'spine' in mind, you could then use some of our youngsters in the other positions. Mills and Molyneux both able to do a job at LB, James at RB, and then you have the likes of Lallana and McLaggon too. It's all about getting the balance right and I think this would be a good way of doing so.

PLEASE From the players we have available at the moment I would go along with this line-up (although I might be tempted to switch Spiderman with Surman as he is more of a goal threat). Along with this with, subs would be: Forecast, Wotton, Surman/Spiderman, Lallana, BWP Ideally, if (as Wotte says) we can bring in ONE new player I would sign a RB. This would allow James (who appears to be our best crosser of the ball, and who would get back to help his RB out) to play RM/RW.
hypochondriac Posted 28 January, 2009 Share Posted 28 January, 2009 No idea why we fail to play Skacel left midfield, especially now Holmes is injured. He is the best available player in that position

sandwichsaint Posted 28 January, 2009 Share Posted 28 January, 2009 KD Surman+ Size* Perry* Rudi+ James Euell* Spider McClaggen Saga* DMG Subs: Lallana, BWP, Holmes, Gillet, GK I would say the 4 with *'s are a given, and we must also start Surman and Skacel every game, somewhere. I've gone for experience across the backline (hopefully to shore up the defence) and two decent fullbacks to retain possesion and start things off. The rest of it's up for grabs and all distorted by not having a decent RB (which is also the problem the real Saints manager faces). I'm not convinced by Spider but on last night's showing (and several others too) Wotton is a busted flush at this level so I'm going for a Spider/Euell combo in midfield. Lloyd James looks like he could be OK at right mid (BWP equally average there if not); McGlaggen gets my vote for a one-off game on the LM but realistically the experience/maturity of Holmes should win that one in real life. I've gone for DMG to partner Saga, he was a revelation last night. A fit, motivated Lallana ought to walk into that side but I can't see anywhere to play him in this system and in our present circumstances. thefuriousb Posted 28 January, 2009 Share Posted 28 January, 2009 Surprising that Euell seems to make nearly every side with one feeling he is "a given", esp a his nickname on here is "Mule"? I tend to agree with SuperMikey's 1st XI, though would probably play with Saga up with BWP lying in a deeper role, maybe interchanging with Lallana & Holmes in the wide roles. I think a rigid 4-4-2 is a little out-dated these days.
L1Minus10 Posted 28 January, 2009 Share Posted 28 January, 2009 --------------Davis------------ James-----Saeijs-----Perry----Skacel Lallana----Wotton----Schneiderlin-----Surman ----------Saganowski--McGoldrick Subs: McLaggon, Bialkowski, Lancashire, Euell, Gillett Nowhere near it: BWP Davis - no brainer James - is all we have Saeijs and Perry are our only 2 CB's who are not Lancashire Skacel - I would like him in CM with Wotton but you build from the back and he's our best LB Lallana - but he has to stay on the wing and cover the full back. If he doesn't, get McLaggon on Wotton and Schneiderlin - Wotton to kick everything and Schneiderlin to get forward, not ponce about on the edge of his own box contributing nothing.Schneiderlin over Euell simply because Euell and Wotton wouldn't retain possession. Surman - he's crap in CM and you don;t need as much pace ont he wings when you have 2 strikers. Saga - no brainer, our best striker by a mile McG - just ahead of Euell. Euell against more physical teams.

labibs Posted 29 January, 2009 Share Posted 29 January, 2009 I think this is a tough question. I would prob go with: Davis James Saeijs Perry Skacel Lallana Wotton Schneiderlin Surman Saga DMG Subs: Forecast, Holmes, Euell, BWP, McClaggon. Possible you can take Holmes off the bench for someone like Gillet, as BWP and Kayne provide cover for the wings. But this is on the proviso that Lallana stays wide right and provides a bit of cover for James. I think Skacel is the strongest LB at the club, which is why he is not at left wing. Wotton is slow, but he is really the only person we have who can put his foot in, in the middle of the park.
