spyinthesky Posted 18 May, 2009 Share Posted 18 May, 2009 The official England world cup 2018/2022 bid has gone live today. A a number of stadia are in the frame should the bid succeed. As expected, Wembley/Old Trafford/Villa park/St James Pk/St of Light/Walkers Stadium are in there plus Elland Rd & Hillsboro (presumably updated) Also in contention are Derby (with increased capacity to 44,000) Hull (increase to 32,500), MK Dons ( to 32,000) New grounds on the list are Liverpool, Bristol City and Nottm Forest (50,000!!!). Surprisingly P/mouth are in there on the basis that Fratton Park will have an increased capacity of 30,000!! I know our future is uncertain but, in some respects so could that of P/mouth, or at least this could be said of their stadium project. Why werent the mighty Saints represented. At least, for the moment, we have a ready made facility

Crab Lungs Posted 18 May, 2009 Share Posted 18 May, 2009 WTF??? Walkers Stadium? Errrrrrrrrr...... was the CoMs mentioned? If not, it should have been. Or can't you have two stadiums from the city or some ghey regulation like that?
Berkshire Saint Posted 18 May, 2009 Share Posted 18 May, 2009 was the CoMs mentioned? If not, it should have been. Or can't you have two stadiums from the city or some ghey regulation like that? Yep. Load of ******** really when we have plenty of big enough stadia in London as well.
The9 Posted 18 May, 2009 Share Posted 18 May, 2009 I'd be guessing we don't have representation because we don't have any representatives at the moment - if we DID have a slightly more solid foundation I would think that the prestige of being a World Cup venue might have dragged a few investors in, especially with all the freebies and the possibility of a cheap expansion but we're still a long way from that point, so this is all a bit late in terms of incentives. On the Fratton front, it's the only way they'll get it built - and we all know that St Mary's is the likely fallback position for when they fail to get THAT approved as well... You need min 40k to host World Cup matches (30k for Euros), but there's always a few weird choices for geographical reasons - viz Montpellier in 98, Suwon(?) in 2002 and Leipzig in 2006. You are only allowed one city with two stadia, yes. That'll be London.... and as the Emirates and Old Trafford (alongside Wembley) are the only 2 with the 60k+ to hold a semi-final the City of Manchester stadium didn't get a look-in. GenevaSaint Posted 18 May, 2009 Share Posted 18 May, 2009 Stadia need to be over 40,000 so that rules the skates out. Portsmouth's chief executive, Peter Storrie, says the club are going ahead with rotating Fratton Park's pitch 90 degrees and expanding the current ground to 30,000 seats by 2011-12, but will build a new 40,000 or 45,000-seat stadium at Port Solent if Portsmouth is selected as a World Cup host city. They've obviously got a huge amount of money swilling around.....

Genghis78 Posted 18 May, 2009 Share Posted 18 May, 2009 There was a good article in the Observer about it. Milton Keynes are a 'wildcard' host. They want a geographic spread, and the only 2 cities south of London to express an interest were Portsmouth and Bristol City. I think Bristol are building a ground anyway with the long term plan of being an established Premiership club by 2018. However, they would build a smaller ground with the ability to remove a roof and temporarily add in a load of seats to get the required 40000 for the World Cup, then afterwards they can reduce it again so they don't end up playing in League 1 with a half empty ground...Teams/cities have about another month to signal interest in also hosting matches, but I think our unknown status and lack of leadership will prevent us from doing that. John B Posted 18 May, 2009 Share Posted 18 May, 2009 (edited) Shows we are not a big club I would have thought Why would we need a 40000 stadium at least Pompey are in the Premiership Edited 18 May, 2009 by John B

Matthew Le God Posted 18 May, 2009 Share Posted 18 May, 2009 Because the FA, FL and Premier League don't like us. Nothing to do with the FL or PL. Also if Saints didn't apply it is hardly the FA's fault.

Matthew Le God Posted 18 May, 2009 Share Posted 18 May, 2009 Why are Anfield/Goodison not even considered? Anfield won't exist in 2018! eelpie Posted 18 May, 2009 Share Posted 18 May, 2009 ... if Saints didn't apply it is hardly the FA's fault. But we must have applied for inclusion in the Rugby World Cup bid proposals, because St Mary's is one of the proposed stadiums.
niceandfriendly Posted 18 May, 2009 Share Posted 18 May, 2009 Christ can you imagine how embarrassing it will be for the people of this country if we have thousands of football fans from around the world spending their big day or week out in Portsmouth? That's a completely and utterly unfair image they're going to take away from England.
Matthew Le God Posted 18 May, 2009 Share Posted 18 May, 2009 But we must have applied for inclusion in the Rugby World Cup bid proposals, because St Mary's is one of the proposed stadiums. St Mary's doesn't need to be expanded for that. Thus would cost no extra money.
Red and White Russ Posted 18 May, 2009 Share Posted 18 May, 2009 Do you think someone high up has said somewhere along the lines of, 'I tell you what we'll let you have some of the Rugby World Cup group games, but let Portsmouth have the Football World Cup group games'. I personally, would much rather have the football over the rugby any day!

oxfordshire_saint Posted 18 May, 2009 Share Posted 18 May, 2009 I'd rather not be a club that expands their stadium/builds a new one when the good times are in full swing, only to then play to a half full ground for the rest of it's days. Oh....

docker-p Posted 18 May, 2009 Share Posted 18 May, 2009 The Portsmyth continues. When will those clowns wake up. They can't get a new ground built as it is, but the promise of a couple of World cup games has them thinking they are going to build a 42k stadium. LMFAO They can't fill Fratton Park as it is. docker-p Posted 18 May, 2009 Share Posted 18 May, 2009 Why are Anfield/Goodison not even considered? I've just read the small print. The 15 perspective host cities are ones that have applied to the FA to be considered. Not the other way around. Portsmyth along with Milton Keynes and Hull have applied, Liverpool, Everton and Saints haven't. Yet.
