eelpie Posted 26 May, 2009 Share Posted 26 May, 2009 http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/8060201.stm Not really Saints related I know, since his illness was well past when he played for us, but watching this interview brought back terrific memories of a great Saints player. Anyone got any specific moments of his time at The Dell?

twopintsnilnil Posted 26 May, 2009 Share Posted 26 May, 2009 His goal at the Dell v Liverpool. Pure class!! The overhead kick that was MOTD goal of the season? I could never quite understand that one - like all bicycle kicks it was a bit hit and hope, although full marks for improvisation. Although IMHO it perhaps wasn't Danny's best goal (if I remember he scored a rare far post header in the same game at the Milton Road end), the build-up included what was probably the best pass I ever saw at the Dell, when Frank Worthington pinged it diagonally from the right back position into the path of Mark Dennis, who at the time was almost as exciting as anyone to watch play in his overlapping full back role. Mark took two swings to get it onto the far post head of Mark Wright who headed back for Danny's finish. It wasn't so much his goal scoring that I remember him for, it was the feeling of exhilaration you got when he had the ball at his feet and he was cutting in from the wing - you knew that there was at least a 50% chance that a goal would result somehow. St Landrew Posted 26 May, 2009 Share Posted 26 May, 2009 Let me guess, before I go to the link, I bet the Beeb say former Man U player, and nothing else.
hypochondriac Posted 26 May, 2009 Share Posted 26 May, 2009 Hey that's good to see. My mother has MS so I can relate to the interview as well.

sotonist Posted 26 May, 2009 Share Posted 26 May, 2009 Let me guess, before I go to the link, I bet the Beeb say former Man U player, and nothing else. to be fair, he does mention in the video that he once played for Birmingham.
Jimmy_D Posted 26 May, 2009 Share Posted 26 May, 2009 Y'know, since his one and only england goal they mention came while he was playing for us, as well as him spending most of his career here, you'd think we'd at least get a passing mention... Good article apart from that though
eurosaint Posted 26 May, 2009 Share Posted 26 May, 2009 to be fair, he does mention in the video that he once played for Birmingham. The clip was very much edited (you can easily tell from the phased gaps) so he might well have mentioned Saints and many other things as well !! RedAndWhite91 Posted 26 May, 2009 Share Posted 26 May, 2009 Let me guess, before I go to the link, I bet the Beeb say former Man U player, and nothing else. According to Wikipedia - 253 appearances for Saints (64 goals) 47 appearances for United (6 goals) And still, no mention of Saints. Shame he was at Saints 'before my time' he sounds like a real legend, and is well brave dealing with Multiple Sclerosis.
70's Mike Posted 26 May, 2009 Share Posted 26 May, 2009 Saw his debut at 16 ,i think , away to United at Old Trafford thing was we good give youngsters a chance then because the rest of the side was strong, Danny was part of the best league side we ever had in

hamster Posted 27 May, 2009 Share Posted 27 May, 2009 Danny was my favourite player, similar size and build and only 6 weeks older than me. He made his debut (replacing the retiring Alan Ball) the same season that I moved down here too. I even conned the kids into naming our new puppy after him a couple of weeks before he signed for the 2nd best team in Europe haha. I wanted to be him. Just read on his MS site that he played for Deal Town 1st team even though he was only 14 at the time. Amazingly, I was born in Deal and never knew of this until 5 minutes ago. Danny, I love ya mate, and don't worry you don't really owe me for all those beers I bouight you in Boogies, they were on me mate, a star struck kid. I believe the beeb has edited out his Saints time in this very short clip, and to be fair the interview is MS related which happened well after he left us. But I never realised that such a high proportion of his career goals were with us. Happy times. I do remember his appearances with his two brothers all in Saints shirts, which I think is a football league record. Correct me if I am wrong.
