david in sweden Posted 6 June, 2009 Share Posted 6 June, 2009 Without injured Anders Svensson, Sweden lost 0-1 to " local rivals " Denmark. Stoke keeper Sörensen saved a penalty from Kim Källström on 12 mins. and proceeded to shut out Sweden for the rest of the game. Another former Saint Michael Nilsson was the villain of the piece on 20 mins. when his clearance across the face of goal - fell to a Danish striker who beat Isaksson from close range. Sweden had more than a dozen shots on goal but Zlatan Ibramimovic, Henke Larsson and Källström all had chances to score but couldn't beat the secure Sörenson. Denmark will win the group while Swedens chances of qualifying for South Africa next year look very slim.

SFC Forever Posted 6 June, 2009 Share Posted 6 June, 2009 Not overly botherd by that result but nice to see our boys were up to it in Kazakhstan winning 4-0 while Croatia drew 2-2.
Baj Posted 6 June, 2009 Share Posted 6 June, 2009 Sweden were unlucky, but they just didnt have the potency infront of goal, Zlatan was bloody awful. Denmark seemed content to take their 1-0 win as soon as they scored and defend the rest, they only had 3 shots on target the whole game. Wasn't a bad game to watch, but you've got to be gutted if you were a sweden fan.

Those of us a bit longer in the tooth have more of a feeling for our history - as well as our future. Not to mention those faithful fans who visited Sweden on a number of occasions (mostly during Strachan's time) and developed an interest in Sweden and the Swedish game). You summed up the game very well Baj. Zlatan - who scores great goals in the Italian league - just didn't cut it in a fast-flowing game where he was man-marked most of the time. Larsson had a off day and missed a sitter in the last 10 mins, and Källström who seems to do so well in his French clubside, had a poor penalty well-saved by (Stoke's) Sörensen and will have to work really hard if he is ever to replace Anders Svensson in the midfield. The Swedes are in deep trouble - barring a few miraculous away wins next season - and are in a transitional stage with coach Lagerbäck likely to quit (after Sweden are "officially " out of it.) When Henke Larsson does retire (he's 37) and when both Michael and Anders (Svensson) are no longer around they'll be a lot of new team building needed. Waiting to see if one of the THREE Elm brothers (from Kalmar) will make it to the Premiership next season ? DANISH Posted 7 June, 2009 Share Posted 7 June, 2009 Denmark got a fully deserved win :-) I think Källströms penalty was ok, but Sörensen made a brilliant save. I believe Sweden builds too much up around Zlatan and when he doesn't have a good game neither does Sweden. Denmark have an pretty cr*p team, but plays like a team and is not just build around one superstar.

Barry the Badger Posted 7 June, 2009 Share Posted 7 June, 2009 (edited) Says the man with an avatar of an ex-Saint who doesn't play any more..... Not really the same thing is it though... I'm all for keeping up with ex Saints and what they're up to, but the point is Anders didn't even play in this match so who gives a ****? Now if I started a thread on here entitled "Zimbabwe win at cricket without Bruce", or "today I had a poo without Bruce" then you might have a point. That would be about as relevant to Saints as this thread. :-) Edited 7 June, 2009 by Barry the Badger

The Majestic Channon Posted 7 June, 2009 Share Posted 7 June, 2009 Nilsson played didn't he? So surely it did involve an ex-saint? Yes he did play, he set up denmark's goal beautifully . Henke Larsson's younger brother was found dead before the match unbeknown to henke.

Waiting to see if one of the THREE Elm brothers (from Kalmar) will make it to the Premiership next season ? It is always good to follow ex-Saints players and Sweden national team. They are much more entertaining than England or Portugal. For the game yesterday, I are pretty sure Sweden just finished our season review before kick off. They usually play much better then Saints particularly in finishing but yesterday they just sum up our whole season completely in one game. Kallstrom's penalty miss was just similar to Surman and Wotton's miss against Doncaster and Watford. Nilsson's mistake cost the team a lot but without that mistake, he is having a good game, which is the same as Lloyd James's performance against Palace. Larsson and Ibrahimovic miss from a few yards is no difference to Euell and Surman's miss against Bristol City and QPR. Sweden played generally well with good passing and create some good chances but just their final third prevent them to get everything from the game. I really hope they are just having a day off but not having the same scoring problem as Saints because I am a Sweden fan before supporting Saints. Elm brothers look really promising and our former championship rival's player, Seb Larsson is a good player as well. Sweden may need to start all of them to sort out their scoring problem. What do you think?

dockland Dave Posted 7 June, 2009 Share Posted 7 June, 2009 Thanks David in Sweden, always try and keep an eye out for the Swedish exsaints. I was in a sports bar in Norkopping about 4 years ago and was amazed to find it was showing Saints vs Wolves (CCC match). I was even more amazed when two Swedish saints fans came in to watch the game in Saints shirts, and how knowledgable they were about are beloved team. Wiltshire Saint Posted 7 June, 2009 Share Posted 7 June, 2009 Ps to the idiots who think this whole thread is pointless, stop being idiots and just don't read it Here, here. I think the moment we stop being interested in players who used to play for Saints or the teams they may now play for or even not play for, it will be a sad day for football and Southampton FC. I have always had fond memories of Egil Ostenstad and when I followed him when he left Saints. My heart sank and a darkness came over me when he signed for Rangers and floundered. I love the fact that he went back to Viking and is now there as Director of sport. After Saints Viking are my second team. All because of an ex saint. And my favourite film is this: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1114723/ Mannen som elsket Yngve is a wonderful film that was inspired by Egil. If it were not for an ex Saint I would not be saying that. I often sit at home with my Saints kit from 1997 on and an egil Ostenstad mask on my face. I ask my wife to pretend to be Peter Schmeichel and although she hates it, doesn't see the point, I shout at her and tell her that if there is a chance that I can mention an ex saints player in any context then I will do so and she should shut her stupid face. Ps to the idiots who think this whole thread is pointless, stop being idiots and just don't read it Thanks dockland Dave, this was a spontaneous post on my part right after the game finished, but didn't think it would arouse such strong objections in some people. Maybe in future I'll put such things over to Overseas Saints from the start. My overall impression is that many people like to hear about former players, whether they were much liked, or otherwise. I still have a pang of nostalgia (for example) when I hear about former players who have died...certainly was the case about Ballie and Osgood and even John McGrath who passed away some years back. Gone - but not forgotten.
