Rest of January

Could it be season defining?

Wins against Leicester and Swansea in the League and Arsenal in the FA Cup plus avoiding defeat v Liverpool - all looks promising.

Poor results in the League, knocked out of both cups and even more meltdown.

Add into the mix losing Jose Fonte and no adequate defensive replacement or offensive upgrade and all the good work of previous years begins to unravel big style.

Sincerely hope the first scenario prevails.

Likihood is that we'll probably get 3/4 points from Leicester/Swansea, and get knocked out of at least one cup, probably two.

Fonte will go of course but we've known that for a while.

Think we need to bring someone else in, even is Yoshida is alongside VVD as first choice. We have to bring in a striker who can score goals from crosses as again last night showed.

Parallels to last season are frightening -

We were absolutely diabolical last season August to end of Jan (If you ignore the away win at Chelsea, Man United and the 4 nil win over Arsenal and the 6 nil win over MKDs + the away draw at Anfield) and we have largely repeated this again this season (If you ignore the EFL cup and win over Inter)

But our season (form and performances) exploded around this stage and we went P19 W12 D4 L3.

No reason why we can’t repeat this again - players are rested, the bad influence (Fonte) removed and the next few fixtures very very favorable.

That's quite a lot to ignore!

Also, between matchday 6 and matchday 12 we gathered 14 out of the available 18 points, which is fantastic. Then november and december hit us hard (like this year).

No excuse this year though because we have a stronger squad....jsut a worse first XI...supposedly.

We just can't score goals, and that's where the root of our problems have arisen from.

It was crying out for us to bring in a striker this/last week to give everyone a boost going into this crucial period.

Of course we need a good striker but finding one to come to St Mary's in January is going to be very difficult I would imagine

Stoke have just signed Berahino for £12m so deals are out there. At his best (and given our ability to improve players) he is clearly better than both JRod and Long.

Whatever people say, I would have liked Berahino here especially at £12m.

Agreed. As good a striker deal as we could have hoped for. Would much rather him than Gabbiadini whose record is pretty patchy and who will cost more most likely.

Totally agree. If we don't get a striker then I think it is as clear sign as any that we have lost our ambition to move forward.

We have no ambition to move forward just consolidate in the epl until a new owner is found, why would kat want to spend anymore money , why pay 30m when we might only get extra 10m in places I league

It looks like the likely scenario. But, it is a risky thing to do. Our place in the Premier League is not guaranteed, despite what many people think.
