Given a penalty is 0.75/0.8 in most models because that’s roughly how many times they are scored you can start working out the logic from there. Not sure about ours but they scored from a yard out, so it’s no surprise their XG is higher.

It also forgets that we have another 17 games at least to sit through as fans. I don’t doubt any of what you’re saying I was just making sure nobody misunderstood that players are absolutely watched by the club. I don’t know ‘the detail of exactly we scout players’, so no. I do know people who have worked for the club doing scout reports by watching the players though so I know that it happens. I’m pretty sure there are online content creators who not only work for the club doing exactly that but will happily answer certain questions about it for you though if you find and ask them nicely.

I haven’t seen his reaction but from what you’re describing it’s more likely he’s recognising every player is/about to be in our own half and he’s being cautious by staying in the opposition half.

Really? We'd just scored on the break, we were hardly in a flow or in control were we? It was a VAR decision and a missed 1 on 1 away from a perfect away performance. Didn't do anything stupid, stood up to the physicality, atmosphere and game the home side wanted to play and created the best chances in the game. Bringing on 2 players the fans were pissed off about not starting and another who is probably our best player when up and running is hardly the disaster people think it is.

This is all well and good until we lose a couple of games and everything about the club is toxic again. Manager, owners and fans are on a knife edge as it is. Taking out some of its best players and trying to convince the crowd in the stadium that it’s all for next season doesn’t feel like a particularly clever idea.

These things happened when playing 5 at the back just recently and they didn’t happen when we went on that winning run earlier when playing 5 at the back. That’s exactly my point 😂

I don’t actually disagree (the first bit, the natural death stuff happens to all tactics whether ‘hipster’ or not). Naturally having a player at the back to pass to rather than elsewhere will encourage passing it at the back and so okay, you change that and that option goes. But would also point out that not having the smallest attack in the league is probably helpful in not passing backwards. Everything has to be so precise without someone to aim for and get us out of trouble. Player profiles on the pitch are more important imo. I’m sure we’ll play a four at some stage with Armstrong starting and find ourselves having little to pass to again and recycling possession. It’s why we should be so desperate to recruit a bigger striker.

I’m not dying on any hill. I think there are obvious tactical benefits for different formations but I’d much rather we as a team, squad, club address some of the underlying issues that it’s faced for a while now. We defended in a four two years ago and conceded lots. It’s not the formation that is making us give away silly goals. It’s not the formation that has us as a really wasteful team. Yes, we missed chances yesterday. We missed chances Saturday. We missed chances against Boro. We also gave away silly goals and will give away silly goals in a 4 too. It’s not a hill I’m dying on, it’s just pointing out the underlying issues will raise its head in whatever formation we like eventually. But if we have to go through more managers, systems and styles to eventually get there then at least I can continue to be so popular on here 😂
