Liverpool agree world-record £75m deal for Virgil van Dijk
SKD replied to SuperSAINT's topic in The Saints
Any clues on who Long is going to? I know he spoke to Brighton, Bmouth, Reading and Burnley in the summer (wasn’t keen on a move back up north)... assume it’s one of these? Bmouth now Defoe is out? -
From what I’ve seen Pellegrino and Puel are very similar managers in terms of philosophy. Puel was just a bit better at setting up defensively.
-
Given the poor form, disharmony in the squad and supposed request to change his style, what evidence do you have to suggest Puel would have done any better with the players we have? I suspect had he stayed, we’d be in a similar position.
-
Personally, I’d get rid off Les and Ross Wilson and bring back Mitchell in a more senior role, overseeing both roles. You’d probably save on salary as well.
-
Boufal is a defensive managers nightmare. He’s pretty ineffective in our half when we don’t have the ball (although to his credit, he does work pretty hard) and is pretty much the only player who try’s to beat his man. He’ll give the ball away more than Redmond, which is why redmond starts more often. The fact he does, pretty much sums up the issues at the club. Too afraid to lose rather than an appetite to win
-
Nope, still just better than MP and seemingly Puel (not a great day for Pamplemousse it seems - Shock)
-
We’re not in a relegation battle though, no chance, far too good for that, you’d be stupid to suggest it.
-
Completely agree. Redmond is a limited player, but he I feel like he is having his limited ability (pace and ability to beat a man) coached out of him. I honestly believe he is carrying out what he has been told to by the manager(s).
-
Agree. Recuirtment in terms of managers and squad players hasn’t been good enough. There was a time we would only sign players to improve our starting 11, for some reason (probably EL) that changed last summer. Interesting that we also seem to have appointed 2 managers insistent on rotation, the season after we lost our fitness coach and replaced them with sport science people.
-
Hodet, Cedric, Bertrand, Lemina, Romeu, PEH (on recent form), Boufal (when he finds consistency), Tadic, Gabbi & Austin (you can’t knock his scoring record) are good enough for top 10 of the PL at least. We are in desperate need of a few players (a big no9, some pace out wide and some more creativity in the middle) make no mistake, but we also need a manager whos first priority is to win. Under Puel and MP we’ve been more concerned about defeat and that seems to have taken all confidence we had under the koeman season out of us. When we play on the front foot we have looked 100x better than trying to defend the edge of our box.
-
Nope, I fully get that BFS would have improved us as a team and almost certainly kept us up. It seems as if you don’t get it, your argument was that we don’t need BFS as we are defensively sound and just don’t score goals. We are not defensively sound, as demonstrated today and on a number of other occasions 3 of our back 4 out or not. To Puels credit, we were defensively organised under him as we were under Koeman (he just played in a more direct and exciting way possibly due to personal)).
-
How do you explain the tonkings against Liverpool and Leicester then?
-
We also hadn’t played all of the top teams, like I’m sure some pointed out...
-
Of course they do, that’s pretty much all they care about
-
Yep, but too little too late. Pellegrino hasn’t learnt.
-
Spot on, which is why we look 100% more effective in the final 3rd with Austin up there.
-
No, it’s just outright stupid and a waste of time. Do you seriously think they board will read that letter? And if they happen to, do you honestly think they’d take action based on 1 fans letter?
-
Fair question. I imagine Les’ input (wanting to play a certain way, wanting to bring youth players through, having major say on transfers), had an impact.
-
Ultimately, he lost the dressing room. Rightly or wrongly, the club decided that it’s eaiser to replace 1 man than the whole squad. He’s a decent manager for a club of us/Leicester size, but he just wasn’t the right fit for us, IMO. MoPe on the other hand, very below average manager.
-
You have to say fair play to Puel. Looking like he learnt from the mistakes he made at us. Getting Leicester playing like they did when they won the PL. A shame it didn’t work out with us, probably because he didn’t have a Vardy up top, but Leicester looks a good fit for him so far.
-
Any manager coming in now has a very difficult job on his hands.
-
Disagree. Think Silva would be a decent fit here if I’m honest, but Puel is certainly better than MP
