Sideways Enjoyable comedy drama which centres on two guys in their forties. One id about to sow his last wild oats before getting married, and the other is still screwed up two years after his divorce. And just when things are looking up he gets his emotions hit again. This is despite having to cover for his lifelong, but shallow mate. Being lifelong pals, they care for each other, but know each other so well, they are short on patience when one or the other hits a weak emotional patch. The humour is dry, and the laughs are genuine. The drama is real, ad so is the melancholic nature of the film. There's a lot for many people to identify with, on some level, or a certain age. This is not a film that's easy to watch, but it gets easier as you empathise with the characters. It's not brilliant, it's not sophisticated, but it draws you in. It's a story about ordinary people, and it keeps you interested allong the way. Recommended 6.5/10 BTW, I reckon King Kong was about 2/10, and only that high because it made me laugh.

You turned into B Rabbit..? At the moment I'm sitting back with a nice piece of Stollen and a large brandy, and watching episodes of Red Dwarf III. I think the series was getting on top form by series 3. By then it was being LOL funny for much of an episode. Ah, nothing to do now but think how I'm going to cook the joint tomorrow. I was thinking about doing it overnight in a very slow oven. maybe I'l get up early and start it straight away. But then again, that sounds a bit energetic. Well now back to Red Dwarf. Polymorph is the episode.

Some very encouraging posts in this thread. Good to see people being led by their own taste buds and not by what they're supposed to eat. I grew up with sprouts being overcooked to the point of them almost being a form of green mashed potato. yes, I know that's how veg was cooked decades ago, but it's surprising that even today, veg is overcooked. Sprouts are absolutely beautiful ever so slightly under cooked, but when they are perfectly cooked with that bite, they are worth writing reams about. Which we are doing at the moment. BTW, is it broccoli and almond shavings, or sprouts and almond shavings..?

What is this new thing about brussel sprouts and the festive season..? You can't blink for some particular celebrity saying how they have to be forced to eat them. And just the other day I saw an advert where some actor was talking about blaming the dog, if you eat them..! And brussel sprouts are not just for Xmas, you know. Earlier today I bought a load of brussels for a tiny price. Brilliant quality too. I love it that people supposedly hate them. They're gorgeous with melted butter and black pepper. Yum..! And if you don't gulp them down you don't become a wind instrument either.

On iPlayer, one of the BBC4 Timeshift series; this one about Oliver Postgate, who sadly, died last year, and his partner in crime, Peter Firmin. Super telly. I don't care what anybody says, my favourite was Ivor the Engine.

Top 10 most annoying cliches used in the office ...
St Landrew replied to Hamilton Saint's topic in The Lounge
Don't know about the office environment anymore, but phrases like... the boy done good, rather than the boy did well, really annoy. Everytime MOTD is on, Alan Shearer's vocabulary is laced with this stuff. Somebody at the Beeb should have a word with him. How are you..? I'm good..! You're not f****** good, you're f****** well..! -
Well said, Joesaint. I completely agree with your sentiment. Whatever they have done and whatever achievements/mistakes either men have made, they have done in the best interests of the club, just as much as for themselves. They will always have my respect.

Yep, the ice skating was as pathetic as you predicted, Jeff. But the whole film stunk. I think I'm on the verge of throwing up. In fact, I practically reached when Jack Black said... it wasn't the aeroplanes, it was beauty that killed the beast. Honestly, I actually do feel slightly nauseous, and it has nothing to do with festive cheer either. :smt078 Crikey, what a clunker..!

I tell you what, I still have some cards to write out, so I'm going to put the film back in, just to see how bad it really gets.

While writing out Christmas cards I'm watching the modern remake of King Kong for the first time, and I have to say that it is a bloody joke. How on earth did this film do any business..? I was never taken by the original concept of the beauty and the beast anyway, but I hoped that a modern attempt might bear fruit. Can't imagine how much money was wasted on such a preposterous film. If I'd have been in the cinema I would have walked out after half an hour, laughing my head off. As it is, I've taken the DVD out of the player at 1hr 43m [because Im only half attending to this crap] when the femme fatale landed totally uninjured onto the nose of a tyrannosaurus rex after falling about 60 feet. I can't watch anymore.

I suppose he thinks he's doing good, but if he slept rough without the prospect of being saved at any point, he might truly find out how tough life can be for those where circumstance, and insufficient life skills can bring a person low. I know that's impossible for him because he lives within a family unit that is unique in this country, in that they can never be allowed to fail. I'm sure he means well, but he's got a lot to learn.

Who watched the John Wayne [Donovan's Reef] film the other day then..?

They're not going off the scale, they are at the top of the scale. What's the point of drawing a scale that's many increments higher than the data goes..?

I watched it as a wee lad, first when William Hartnell was The Doctor, and then Patrick Troughton. It kind of fizzled out even then, for me. All that, hiding behind the sofa and being frightened, codswallop never happened as far as I was concerned, and I've never really taken to it since. A shame really, because I like the idea of Time-Travel, but the Dr Who scenario uses the idea just to have someone new to defeat each episode/series/whatever. Whereas I'd like them to explore the well discussed time paradoxes. Daleks, Cybermen, and people running around in latex suits with tentacles leaves me laughing at best, and at worst, totally bored. Sorry.

Lol. Is this for real..? BBC gets a proper interviewer to do the job. ITV gets cosy on the sofa, and we've got street cred with SKY.

Indeed.

For queen and country this Xmas and new year
St Landrew replied to Thedelldays's topic in The Lounge
For Queen and the Country eh..? Sorry, I seem to have got into a mini habit of recognising song names. It'll pass. -
I think the Echo are over reacting a bit. But then Colchester is in a bloody cold part of the country, when the weather turns sour. It's flat, it's in the east, and the wintry weather is coming right at it, pretty much unhindered. I bet the little club has no under pitch heating system either. Wouldn't surprise me if the Echo got it wrong, and it wouldn't surprise me if the game was called off either.

As above.

I thought it was OK'ish. Obviously, not the best by a long shot. Quite liked the Mimo exhibition audience attempt, although besides the Noble, there were was very little directly about cars in the entire programme. Such has Top Gear become. And once again, no bikes [not that I ever expect there to be], even though both May and Hammond own and ride motorcycles.

Has any one got an youtube link to Papa Waigo..

What exactly are you on about..? -
Really peculiar. I also love the high style jounalism of The Sun: CCTV footage shows the 5ft 9in balding ginger weirdo pretending to pick items off shelves before crouching behind the shelf stacker. Oh, that's really classy stuff. Such rhythm in the phrase.
