Maidenhead United, The Magpies; one of the oldest clubs and grounds (York Road) in the country. Who can forget the FA cup tie against Aveley, the "we hate Slough Town" chants. Featured in 'Fever Pitch', no less. Apart from that I'd turn out to watch my women's team even if I wasn't playing. But local Italian teams: Juventus is obviously out (supported by plastics) so Torino would be my nearest league team. It's just not the same though as supporting Saints, difficult to explain as it is.

Hmm, I need a fair bit of dental work doing. Not so sure about neo Nazi stuff but tattoed lesbian is fine by me.:-)) Would I get a discount if I told her I was a woman footballer and supported Saints? How long after anaesthetic can you have a beer?.... Meanwhile, back on topic, this thread continues to entertain.. Don't know why Pompey fans complain it's a masturbatory fantasy. Who needs a fantasy with this reality, and I'm too busy laughing, chuckling, chortling, snorting and snig gering to get the rechargeables out...

I think I preferred chapter 5 to chapter 6; the latter seemed like you were in a hurry to get somewhere and there were more lolz in 5. Sorry I missed your kind offer to write my own masterwork - or is that mistresswork - but the memory isn't what it was and adventures are few and far between here. If I were into the juniors in the footie team like our disgusting _ex_ physio then there might have been more, but fortunately I'm not... Still, writers are meant to be imaginative, aren't they - E L James excepted - so maybe one of these days... Maybe I'll have a good New Year's Eve in Southampton this year and then have fun in the Itchen stand ladies' toilets at the Arsenal match - if I can get a ticket, that is...

I've skied many of those runs, but never very elegantly, and as I'm no longer young these days I'd ski them a bit slower. Tortin was fun but Mt Fort was er... more of a strain on the heart, The Wall at Avoriaz I did quite early on in my skiing holidays and wasn't too bad. I've also done a few steep mogul runs doing the impression of a lump of slithery liver sliding downhill but names don't come to mind. I've come to the conclusion that it's not so much the run as the conditions, and if you're having a bad day even worse... So piste no 3 at La Thuile (the Franco Berthod downhill) is fine in decent conditions, tremendous fun in fresh powder before they prep it but lethal with ice. I take all talk of straight-lining with a pinch of salt... I skied the Hahnenkamm after the World Cup downhill: they'd closed the Mausefalle due to lack of snow, and the rest was race-prepared ice but my skis weren't. I got off it to the side as soon as I could. After watching Tomba do the slalom I had a go on that run too (without the gates), and it gave me a new appreciation of their technique and the sharpness of their edges. As for ski injuries: surely that's another thread?:-) I managed to hit a slightly disguised line of snow/ice lumps as I came from the off-piste, and although I was well-balanced and going straight both skis released almost at once and I came down on a lump of ice on my thigh and (I presume, judging by the bruises on my hip) my pole. Landing so heavily and without time to adjust I was really shaken up and almost fainted as I made my way home. Fortunately our football game was called off at the week-end as I was due to play in goal, and the bruising and swelling was impressive, and still is!

La Rosiere is linked with La Thuile over the pass on the Italian side: easy enough to get to Italy apart from a final slow drag lift and worth going over for the skiing it opens up. Plenty of skiing for your beginners and a number of fast detachable 6 man chairs from resort level at LR, so not too much of a bottleneck. Never had queues there, but I can be a bit selective when I ski and Sundays (bad everywhere in the ALps) I play football anyway. It can be a bit windy up at the top of the pass but that's no problem given the lower stuff available. You can't predict accurately as snow does melt :-), but plenty of snow at the moment and (high avalanche risk): 160cm at resort level and 270cm at Le Fort... HTH

If any of you want to do further research I'll be skiing (or have already skied) this season at Cervinia, Champoluc, Courmayeur, Crevacol, Gressoney (various + Alagna), La Thuile, Pila and over the border in La Rosiere, Zermatt and, hopefully, Verbier.

I might go tomorrow but had a pretty bad fall last week and the bruise is now a vivid yellow and my thigh feels a bit weak. The recent snow here on the Italian side of Mont Blanc/Monte Bianco has been good so a base has already been established for the season and I've already done some off-piste (plus some avalanche transceiver training), so I'm set to go... Off to the UK soon for Christmas, but if anyone needs some local advice let me know... cheaper than France here, that's for certain...

I thought it was a curtain rail, possibly with a very large finial, but what do I know... Having watched the highlights of our under 21s, I'd love to see them give Pompey a game: perhaps a charity match over Christmas...

So you're blithely unaware that the share of national wealth taken by workers as opposed to capital has greatly reduced over the last 30/40 years. Unless you are a land-owning, moneyed Tory your well-being will have been affected by this, but perhaps you like being shat upon by the elites..

Well, those of you who work in London would no doubt prefer a strike on a working day, rather than Boxing Day when most travel is non-essential. You don't get paid if you go on strike so it would make sense to pay decent overtime for a day like Boxing Day which no one with family wants to work, since then you'd be losing more money, plus all those short of money would even volunteer..

Well actually, in the big city just an ordinary and cheap mobile will supply the peace of mind of being in contact without worrying about losing an expensive bit of kit. My footie team's changing room was broken into during the first half last Sunday and my first ever (5 month old) smart phone was taken. Mine wasn't too expensive, but one lass had a 600/700 euro iphone taken which she'd only had 2 weeks, plus various others too. Nice to have but I won't be replacing it in a hurry: I don't actually _need_ a smartphone and that's my budget busted for a bit. If I see a good buy I might splash out after Christmas. In terms of provider I find Giff Gaff reasonable value when I'm in the UK. If you want kids to get into computing you'd be far better getting them a Raspberry Pi: smartphones aren't TVs but they are a much more passive form of entertainment. I'm of the age when I'm still surprised at what kids get given, but my first record player and (second-hand) push bike both came very late by today's standards.

Thanks for the picture Kraken. Actually I thought it was obvious that you could almost double up the numbers as Jackanory says, due to the clearly visible shallow step. Presumably people arrange themselves something like this: [if the formatting works..] 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 I'm old enough, although probably not rich enough, to want to sit, with the option of standing when the game gets exciting but I might consider standing if the saving was significant. I've done it often enough before and I'm not decrepit!
